Water conservation and circular water reuse in clinical haemodialysis facilities: a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Haemodialysis is a life-sustaining but resource-intensive therapy with a substantial water footprint, estimated globally at 270 billion litres annually and approximately 78,000 L per patient. Green dialysis strategies increasingly focus on reducing dialysate-related water demand and recovering reverse osmosis RW; however, evidence remains dispersed across clinical studies, service reports and feasibility analyses. This scoping review mapped and synthesised literature on water conservation and reuse strategies in haemodialysis. METHODS: A scoping review was conducted in accordanc

Breeding phenology plasticity to climate revealed by automated monitoring of two Eudpytes penguin species across the sub-Antarctic.

The timing of breeding is a key component of a species' realised niche and has been shown to be flexible to environmental change. Using a network of time-lapse cameras around Patagonia and the sub-Antarctic, along with citizen science assisted AI data extraction, we demonstrate that semi-automated extraction of phenological parameters is feasible without extensive human presence at colonies. Our comparative analysis of two related penguin species across the Polar Front reveals shifts in breeding phenology linked to environmental variation. The Southern Rockhopper Penguin showed a potential con

Environmental Modulation of Perceived Cognitive Workload During a Memory Task: Evidence from Immersive Virtual Reality.

Understanding how environmental contexts influence cognitive functioning is a key issue in cognitive science and applied ergonomics. This study examined whether everyday environmental settings modulate task performance and perceived cognitive workload during a card-matching memory task, using high-fidelity immersive Virtual Reality (VR) environments. Participants performed the task by sequentially uncovering cards and remembering their spatial locations to identify matching pairs in two virtual scenarios: a naturalistic environment (urban park) and an artificial setting (office). The number of

Best practices for disinfection of noncritical environmental surfaces and equipment in health care facilities: A bundle approach.

Over the past decade, there is excellent evidence in the scientific literature that contaminated environmental surfaces and noncritical patient care items play an important role in the transmission of several key health care-associated pathogens including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, vancomycin-resistant enterococci, Acinetobacter, norovirus, and Clostridium difficile. Thus, surface disinfection of noncritical environmental surfaces and medical devices is one of the infection prevention strategies to prevent pathogen transmission. This article will discuss a bundle approach to

Microalgae-Based Semiartificial Photosynthesis: Strategies, Applications, and Future Prospects.

Microalgae, as efficient photosynthetic microorganisms, hold great potential for solar-driven carbon fixation and sustainable biomanufacturing. However, their performance is limited by spectral mismatch, inefficient electron transport, and diffusion-limited CO2 assimilation. Recent developments in microalgae-based semiartificial photosynthetic systems (SAPSs) combine living algal cells with engineered abiotic components to address these challenges without in vitro photosynthesis reconstruction. In SAPSs, microalgae provide carbon fixation, metabolic flexibility, and regulatory adaptability, wh

The data substrate of exposome intelligence: an interoperability profile for untargeted metabolomics.

Untargeted metabolomics, anchored in high-resolution mass spectrometry, has matured into the central analytical platform of human exposomics. It can capture endogenous biology, diet, drugs, microbial chemistry, environmental contaminants, and their transformation products from a single biological sample. Yet exposome science remains stubbornly single-study: most untargeted exposomics publications stand alone, featuring tables, partial annotations, and semi-quantitative intensities that cannot be combined across cohorts. The bottleneck is no longer instrumentation or annotation; it is interoper

Bridging Biology and Society: Molecular Insights into Social Determinants of Vascular Disease.

BACKGROUND: Vascular diseases (VDs)-such as arterial aneurysms, chronic venous disease, and peripheral artery disease-are influenced by a complex interplay of genetic, biological, and social factors. Integrating the assessment of both molecular and social determinants offers a novel framework that connects factors like socioeconomic status, chronic stress, and environmental exposures to the molecular pathways that drive vascular pathophysiology. METHODS: This review was conducted searching libraries such as Web of Science, Scopus, MEDLINE, and Google Scholar. The aim was to facilitate the ana

Integrating environmental and behavioral tracking via digital health systems for personalized skin health management.

Chronic dermatological conditions impose a significant burden on global health and quality of life. The etiology of these disorders is multifaceted, driven by complex interactions between endogenous factors and the "skin exposome", which comprises a person's environmental exposure and lifestyle. While digital health systems (DHSs) have transformed the management of numerous chronic diseases, a unified framework that captures the dynamic interplay of environment, behavior, and skin physiology has not been fully established to date. Therefore, this review proposes and evaluates a holistic "envir

From Air to Brain: Environmental Nanoparticles as Modifiable Risk Factors for Neurodevelopmental, Neurodegenerative, and Mental Disorders.

Ultrafine particles (≤100 nm) and other environmental nanoparticles have emerged as biologically active pollutants that can cross biological barriers, including the blood-brain barrier and the placenta. Growing evidence implicates ultrafine particles in a wide range of neuropsychiatric conditions, yet their effects remain poorly integrated into clinical and public health frameworks. In this review, we distinguish between size-defined ultrafine particles (UFPs, ≤100 nm), composition-defined environmental nanoparticles originating from combustion and secondary formation processes, and engineered

Proteomic profiling of bone for the estimation of post-mortem interval and post-mortem submersion interval: a systematic review.

Accurate estimation of the Post-Mortem Interval (PMI) and Post-Mortem Submersion Interval (PMSI) remains a persistent challenge in forensic science, especially when traditional morphological and entomological methods fail due to advanced decomposition or in aquatic environments. Proteomic profiling of bone tissues has recently emerged as a promising approach, leveraging the predictable degradation patterns of bone proteins to estimate time since death more reliably. This systematic review, conducted in accordance with PRISMA guidelines, analyzed 24 peer-reviewed studies focusing on the applica

Stable lead isotopes in environmental health with emphasis on human investigations.

There has been widespread use of stable lead isotopes in the earth sciences for more than 40 years focussed on the origin and age of rocks and minerals with lesser application in environmental investigations where the emphasis has been directed typically to the source of lead in environmental media such as air, water and soils. In contrast, the number of environmental health investigations focussed on humans (and primates) is limited in spite of the demonstrated utility of the approach in pioneering studies in the early 1970's. This paper reviews the status of lead isotopes in human investigat

Who knows what a mask is … and what it does? A bibliometric and textometric study of more than a century of scientific publications on sanitary masks (1892-2023).

In this article, the authors identify the disciplines that have taken an interest in masks over time, as well as how, in what proportions, according to what concerns, with what developments, and possibly with what effects. They ask whether the multiplicity of disciplinary perspectives is likely to lead to the emergence and sharing of new concerns, especially environmental ones, or whether the balkanization and juxtaposition of disciplines may leave certain aspects in the dark and thus contribute to the persistent production of a certain kind of ignorance. Based on a bibliometric and textometri

Participatory design of built environment strategies to enhance movement, wellbeing, and quality of life among incarcerated men.

BACKGROUND: The global prison population has grown by 5% since 2020, intensifying existing challenges to inmate health and well-being. Incarcerated individuals experience disproportionately high levels of sedentary behaviour (SB), which increases their risk of physical and mental health problems. Although regular physical activity (PA) can mitigate these risks, correctional settings often present environmental and institutional barriers that limit opportunities for movement. While modifying built environments has shown promise for promoting PA in community settings, limited research has explor
