Diagnostic and therapeutic approach to multiple endocrine neoplasia type 2B in pediatric patients.

Multiple endocrine neoplasia (MEN) 2B is a hereditary syndrome including medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC), pheochromocytoma, gastrointestinal (GI) disorders, marfanoid facies, and multiple ganglioneuromas. MTC is the major cause of mortality, and often appears during the 1st decade of life. RET proto-oncogene mutations are responsible for MEN 2B. Other RET mutations cause MEN 2A syndrome, familial MTC, or Hirschsprung's disease. We studied three MEN 2B patients with the aim of delineating the best diagnostic and therapeutic protocol. The gold standards for diagnosis are histochemical study of

Comments on frontonasal dysplasia, ocular hypertelorism and dystopia canthorum.

The mean canthal index values of patients with frontonasal dysplasia are tested for differences in facies A, B, C, and D. A general discussion of ocular hypertelorism and dystopia canthorum is presented. Ocular hypertelorism is considered a sign which may occur in a variety of disorders. Quantitative methods for determining ocular hypertelorism are critically reviewed.

Immuno-reconstitution by thymic transplant in DiGeorge's syndrome.

Persistent hypocalcaemic tetany in a breast-fed neonate made us suspect DiGeorge's syndrome, particularly as the baby had an abnormal facies, and a ventricular septal defect. Immuno-reconstitution was successfully achieved by thymic transplant. Evidence of immuno-reconstitution on the basis of the histology of the post-transplant thymus has not been previously recorded.

[Steiner-type neuroapudomatosis presented a pseudo-Hirschsprung disease (author's transl)].

A case of Steiner type neuroapudomatosis presented with a pseudo-Hirschsprung disease in an infant. Secondarily, the facies became typical, while hyperthyrocalcitoninaemia led to the discovery at the age of 2 years and 8 months of a medullary carcinoma of the thyroid. Despite early surgery in the absence of any clinical signs, it was not possible to avoid cervical lymphatic spread.

Two Dutch brothers with Borrone dermato-cardio-skeletal syndrome.

In 1993, Borrone et al. described two Italian brothers affected by a syndrome of severe acne, mitral valve prolapse, dysmorphic facies, and Scheuermann-like changes of the vertebral column. Since then, no further cases have been reported. Here, we report on two Dutch brothers with many features suggestive of this rare syndrome.

Characteristic facial dysmorphism, arachnodactyly and mental handicap in two unrelated girls: a distinct MCA/MR syndrome?

Two nonrelated, moderately mentally retarded girls are described with identical clinical signs and symptoms, i.e. brachycephaly, typical facies with thin lips and microstomia, ectomorphic habitus with extreme long, thin fingers and toes and hypoplastic external genitalia. The clinical findings in the present patients allow for the delineation of a new MCA/MR syndrome.

Hydrops fetalis associated with congenital myotonic dystrophy.

We report a case of congenital myotonic dystrophy in a newborn infant who presented with hydrops fatalis. Clinical features were hypotonia, generalized edema, pleural effusion, respiratory distress, scalp hematomas, and tented mouth facies. Review of literature shows that congenital myotonic dystrophy is not a rare cause of nonimmune hydrops fetalis as previously thought.

Geochemistry of some fluoride and nitrate enriched water resources from the Oriental Basin: a prospective health risk hotspot from eastern-central Mexico.

In attention to the Sustainable Development Goal 6, the quality evaluation of water resources in Mexico is limited compared to other regions. This study provided new data from Oriental Basin, an important socio-economic region with up to 20% population growth over the last decade by assessing groundwater from the Libres-Oriental aquifer (Ca-Mg-HCO3 facies; F-: 2.5-9.9 mg/L; NO3-: up to 75.3 mg/L) and water from the Totolcingo Lake (Na-Cl facies; F-: 12.7-13.2 mg/L; NO3-: < 0.75 mg/L). Fluoride content grouped about 80% groundwater samples as promotor of dental and skeletal fluorosis. Nitrate P

JAG1 mutations are found in approximately one third of patients presenting with only one or two clinical features of Alagille syndrome.

Alagille syndrome is a multisystem disorder characterized by highly variable expressivity, most frequently caused by heterozygous JAG1 gene mutations. Classic diagnostic criteria combine the presence of bile duct paucity on liver biopsy with three of five systems affected; liver, heart, skeleton, eye and dysmorphic facies. The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and distribution of JAG1 mutations in patients referred for routine clinical diagnostic testing. Clinical data were available for 241 patients from 135 families. The index cases were grouped according to the number of sys
