More Help from Friends and Family? Trends in Determinants of Surrogate Health Information-Seeking.

Friends and family members often choose to seek health information for a loved one, rather than all information-seeking being carried out by the patient for themselves. Despite the popularity of this proxy for health information-seeking behavior (PHISB), there is a lack of more current data on PHISB, as well as on changes in PHISB. We analyzed health information-seeking based on data from the two available waves of the HINTS Germany study (2018/19: N = 2.147;2020: N = 1.865). HINTS Germany is a data set mapping health information behaviors in the German population, closely linked to the well-e

Family Medicine Resident Education About Health Disparities Associated With Incarceration: A CERA Research Study.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: We submitted research questions to the Council of Academic Family Medicine Educational Research Alliance (CERA) to assess the format of family medicine resident education about health disparities associated with incarceration and the perceived efficacy of efforts to prepare graduates for competent care of formerly incarcerated patients in practice. We think this is a universal problem, and current efforts are insufficient. METHODS: We evaluated data as part of the fall 2022 CERA survey of program directors (PDs). We reviewed descriptive statistics, generated compara

Role of religious leaders in adolescents' reproductive health and family planning: A systematic review.

This systematic review examines the role of religious leaders in adolescents' reproductive health and family planning. Following PRISMA guidelines, databases like PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus, ProQuest, and Web of Science were searched, yielding 1435 articles from 2018 to 2023. Inclusion criteria comprised of open access original peer-reviewed articles that were written in English language, with a concentration on adolescent health. On the other hand, reviews, systematic reviews, and meta-analyses were excluded. From our findings, religious leaders play a significant role in influencing the u

Experiences with Family Planning amongst Persons with Mental Health Problems: A Nationwide Patient Survey.

High rates of unintended pregnancies in patients with mental health problems reflect the unmet need for tailored family planning. This study aims to explore aspects of family planning that are especially challenging for patients experiencing health problems by obtaining the perspective of (former) patients and those with close relationships with the (former) patients. In August 2021, members of a Dutch national mental health panel, consisting of (former) patients and close ones, were invited to respond to a 34-question online survey that included questions on four domains: reproductive history

Family income as a moderator of relations between sleep and physical health during adolescence.

OBJECTIVES: Sleep duration, quality, and consistency are associated with overall physical health in adolescence, yet the effects of sleep on development may be not uniform because both sleep and physical health vary systematically along gradients of family income. To understand "for whom" sleep may be particularly beneficial, the present study tested family income as a moderator of relations between youth sleep and physical health. METHODS: Three hundred twenty-three youth (M age=17.39years; 53% female; 41% Black, 59% White) wore wrist actigraphs for 1week at home. Four well-recognized sleep

The LRRC family of BK channel regulatory subunits: potential roles in health and disease.

Large conductance K+ channels, termed BK channels, regulate a variety of cellular and physiological functions. Although universally activated by changes in voltage or [Ca2+ ]i , the threshold for BK channel activation varies among loci of expression, often arising from cell-specific regulatory subunits including a family of leucine rich repeat-containing (LRRC) γ subunits (LRRC26, LRRC52, LRRC55 and LRRC38). The 'founding' member of this family, LRRC26, was originally identified as a tumour suppressor in various cancers. An LRRC26 knockout (KO) mouse model recently revealed that LRRC26 is also

Update on Fc receptor-like (FCRL) family: new immunoregulatory players in health and diseases.

Fc receptor-like (FCRL) molecules, as recently identified members of the immunoglobulin superfamily (IgSF), are preferentially expressed by B-cells. They have variable number of extracellular immunoglobulin-like domains and cytoplasmic activating ITAMs and/or inhibitory ITIMs. FCRL1-5 are dominantly expressed in different stages of B-cells development. But, FCRL6 is preferentially expressed in different subsets of T-cells and NK cells. FCRL1-5 could regulate different features of B-cell evolution such as development, differentiation, activation, antibody secretion and isotype switching. Areas

Health literacy and the perception of risk in a breast cancer family history clinic.

BACKGROUND: Informed consent is an essential component of medical practice, and especially so in procedural based specialties which entail varying degrees of risk. Breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in women, and as such is the focus of extensive research and significant media attention. Despite this, considerable misperception exists regarding the risk of developing breast cancer. AIMS: This study aims to examine the accuracy of risk perception of women attending a breast cancer family history clinic, and to explore the relationship between risk perception accuracy and health li

Developing a response to family violence in primary health care: the New Zealand experience.

BACKGROUND: Despite primary health care being recognised as an ideal setting to effectively respond to those experiencing family violence, responses are not widely integrated as part of routine health care. A lack of evidence testing models and approaches for health sector integration, alongside challenges of transferability and sustainability, means the best approach in responding to family violence is still unknown. The Primary Health Care Family Violence Responsiveness Evaluation Tool was developed as a guide to implement a formal systems-led response to family violence within New Zealand p

A review of family and environmental correlates of health behaviors in high-risk youth.

Disparities in the prevalence of obesity in youth place minority and low socioeconomic status youth at increased risk for the development of chronic disease, such as metabolic syndrome and type 2 diabetes. Contributing factors to the increases in obesity include a decline in positive health behaviors, such as making healthy dietary choices, engaging in physical activity, and limiting sedentary behaviors. Family and physical environmental contextual factors related to health behaviors are increasingly the focus of health behavior interventions in line with the bioecological model that encourage
