BACKGROUND: In some trigger finger patients, tenderness is found in the dorsal proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joint. The etiology and prevalence of this condition are unclear. Furthermore, surgical outcomes for trigger fingers with coexisting dorsal PIP tenderness have not been reported. This study (1) determined the prevalence and risk factors for PIP joint tenderness in trigger fingers and (2) compared postoperative outcomes for trigger fingers with and without joint tenderness.
METHODS: This prospective cohort study was conducted between August 2018 and March 2020. We enrolled 190 patients

OBJECTIVES: To study the reliability and construct validity of ultrasound in interphalangeal finger joints affected by erosive osteoarthritis (EOA) and non-EOA with MRI as the reference method.
METHODS: 252 joints were examined by ultrasound, conventional radiography and clinical examination. Ultrasound was performed using a high-frequency linear transducer (12 × 18 MHz). On the same day, magnetic resonance images of 112 joints were obtained on a 3.0 T magnetic resonance unit. The ultrasound and MRI images were re-read independently by other readers unaware of the diagnosis, clinical and othe

Occurrence of the proximal interphalangeal (PIP) joints contracture is a characteristic consequence of traumas of a forearm and a hand, complicated by the phenomena of a chronic ischemia. Their formation leads to occurrence of considerable functional deficiency of a hand, especially at involving in process of several fingers, and treatment is a complicated problem. Secondary contractures of PIP joints at a chronic ischemia of a hand and fingers differ high severity level, firmness, are characterized by fast formation and progressing. Elimination of the primary factor of blocking of a kinematic

Ultrasound (US) imaging is a standard clinical tool for assessment of soft tissue inflammation, particularly for imaging the peripheral joints of the hands and feet, which are usually the first to be affected by rheumatoid arthritis. Robotic US has recently gained attention as a means of delivering repeatable and operator-independent imaging. Previously developed robotic US for 3D volumetric imaging of human finger joints relies on the linear scan of the target joint to collect a series of 2D B-mode US images. Although effective in many contexts and simple in control and image reconstruction,

Dorsal dislocations of the metacarpophalangeal joint (MCPJ) are a rare occurrence, often caused by falling on the outstretched hand with hyperextension of the MCPJ. MCPJ dislocations can be complex due to the interposition of soft tissue, making closed reduction not possible. This report describes a case of complex dorsal dislocation of the index finger MCPJ managed by a combined open dorsal and volar approach with a good functional outcome. The patient was followed up at two weeks and three months postoperatively. He reported no pain, minimal stiffness, and a stable index finger MCPJ at three

Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune disease that can cause severe joint damage and functional impairment. Ultrasound imaging has shown promise in providing real-time assessment of synovium inflammation associated with the early stages of RA. Accurate segmentation of the synovium region and quantification of inflammation-specific imaging biomarkers are crucial for assessing and grading RA. However, automatic segmentation of the synovium in 3D ultrasound is challenging due to ambiguous boundaries, variability in synovium shape, and inhomogeneous intensity distribution. In this work

The simulation-to-reality (sim2real) problem is a common issue when deploying simulation-trained models to real-world scenarios, especially given the extremely high imbalance between simulation and real-world data (scarce real-world data). Although the cycle-consistent generative adversarial network (CycleGAN) has demonstrated promise in addressing some sim2real issues, it encounters limitations in situations of data imbalance due to the lower capacity of the discriminator and the indeterminacy of learned sim2real mapping. To overcome such problems, we proposed the imbalanced Sim2Real scheme (

PURPOSE: In treatment of mallet finger fractures (MFFs), the aim is to minimize residual extension lag, reduce subluxation, and restore congruency of the distal interphalangeal (DIP) joint. Failure to do so may increase the risk of secondary osteoarthritis (OA). However, long-term follow-up studies focusing on OA of the DIP joint after an MFF are scarce. The purpose of this study was to assess OA, functional outcomes, and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) after an MFF.
METHODS: A cohort study was performed with 52 patients who sustained an MFF at a mean of 12.1 years (range, 9.9-15.5

Wearing robotic gloves has become increasingly crucial for hand rehabilitation in stroke patients. However, traditional robotic gloves can exert additional pressure on the hand, such as prolonged use leading to poor blood circulation and muscle stiffness. To address these concerns, this work analyzes the finger kinematic model based on computerized tomography (CT) images of human hands, and designs a low-pressure robotic glove that conforms to finger kinematic characteristics. Firstly, physiological data on finger joint flexion and extension were collected through CT scans. The equivalent rota

BACKGROUND: Evidence supports the use of hand-based metacarpophalangeal joint (MCPJ) blocking splints as an intervention for trigger finger (TF). In practice, finger-based relative motion (RM) splints are also implemented without evidence.
PURPOSE: This randomized comparative trial (RCT) aims to evaluate implementation of MCPJ blocking and RM splints for effectiveness, function, occupational performance and wearability after 6 weeks of TF management.
METHODS AND ANALYSIS: Priori analysis determined 36 individuals were needed for random assignment to the RM or MCPJ blocking splint groups. Ind

Total hip replacements have been recorded in the Norwegian Arthroplasty Register since 1987, and recording of the other joint arthroplasties was started in January 1994. After 12 months 1,589 primary arthroplasties had been registered; these referred to 962 knees, 11 ankles, 76 toes, 113 shoulders, 69 elbows, 12 wrists, 335 fingers and 11 carpometacarpal 1 joints. Median age of the patients was 70 years. 80% were women. Rheumatoid arthritis was the predominant reason for joint replacement, except in the case of the knees where the dominant cause was osteoarthrosis (71%) and of shoulders, 28% o

BACKGROUND: Complex injuries of the hand frequently result in loss of essential functional features. Common reconstructive procedures for soft tissue defects of the thumb or phalanges are locoregional flaps like Moberg-, Foucher-, Cross-Finger- or Littler flaps. Microneurovascular toe (joint-) transfers complete the arsenal of operative reconstructive procedures and allow for most detailed reconstructions. Our experiences with free toe transplants are reported and diversely discussed regarding contending procedures.
METHODS: From 2010 until 2019 14 patients who received emergency or elective

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Chronic unreduced dislocations of the proximal interphalangeal joint are uncommon and management principles for these injuries have not been defined. The dislocation can be either volar or dorsal and closed reduction is rarely successful due to soft tissue contractures.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 61-year-old woman presented with a 17-year-old deformity of her left fifth finger, sustained from a bathroom slip. Initially, the patient complained of pain and deformity. After failed of conservative treatment, patient was referred for surgical intervention. Physical examinati
