Perpetrator characteristics and firearm use in pediatric homicides: Supplementary Homicide Reports - United States, 1976 to 2020.

BACKGROUND: Describe trends in perpetrator characteristics and firearm use in pediatric homicides across the United States. METHODS: Multiply-imputed data from the Federal Bureau of Investigation's 1976-2020 Supplementary Homicide Reports were used to estimate perpetrator characteristics (sex, age, and relationship to victim) and firearm use in pediatric homicides. Descriptive analyses were stratified by victim age group, sex, race, and five-year time periods. RESULTS: Family members were the most common perpetrator of infant and toddler (ages 0-4) and child (ages 5-12) homicides, whereas ac

Effect of Veteran-Focused Suicide Prevention Public Messaging on Help-Seeking Behavior and Secure Firearm Storage.

Suicide is a major public health concern in the United States. Veterans are among those at higher risk for death by suicide. Firearm ownership is one factor that contributes to veterans' elevated suicide risk. The current study sought to determine the effectiveness of an evidence-based, multi-media advertising campaign with a specific focus on veterans related to secure storage of firearms and general help-seeking attitudes during a mental health crisis. Results indicated positive changes in (a) attitudes toward seeking help from a health care provider or a friend/loved one during a mental hea

Feasibility and Acceptability of a Virtual Reality Curriculum to Support Firearm Safety Counseling Skills Among Pediatric Residents.

Background Firearm-related injury is the leading cause of death among US children and adolescents. Residents across specialties report low preparedness to provide firearm safety counseling. Virtual reality (VR) may offer a modality to support residents' skills through deliberate practice in a simulated setting. Objective To describe a novel screen-based VR curriculum on firearm safety counseling and report feasibility and acceptability outcomes, including residents' perceptions. Methods Fifteen senior pediatric residents were recruited from 2 large children's hospitals. The curriculum included

Localization of a Bullet in a Firearm Injury Victim Using X-ray Imaging During Autopsy: A Case Report.

Firearm injuries can result in varying degrees of trauma, depending on factors such as the type of firearm, range, and wound location. This case report presents the role of X-ray imaging in detecting a projectile causing fatal penetrating abdominal trauma in a 45-year-old male. The patient was found with a gunshot wound in his abdomen, and despite medical interventions, he succumbed to his injuries. X-ray imaging revealed a hyper-dense area resembling a bullet lodged in the abdominal cavity. Autopsy confirmed a close-range gunshot with significant internal damage to the peritoneum, mesentery,

Pediatric craniocerebral firearm injuries: literature review, best practices in medical and surgical management, and case report.

INTRODUCTION: Civilian craniocerebral firearm injuries are extremely lethal. Management includes aggressive resuscitation, early surgical intervention when indicated, and management of intracranial pressure. Patient neurological status and imaging features should be used to guide management and the degree of intervention. Pediatric craniocerebral firearm injuries have a higher survival rate, but are much rarer, especially in children under 15 years old. This paucity of data underscores the importance of reviewing pediatric craniocerebral firearm injuries to determine best practices in surgical

Lifetime Risk of Death From Firearm Injuries, Drug Overdoses, and Motor Vehicle Accidents in the United States.

BACKGROUND: News media and policy makers frequently discuss deaths from firearms, drug overdoses, and motor vehicle accidents. However, this information is generally presented as absolute numbers or annual rates. Cumulative lifetime risk may be an additional useful metric for understanding the impact of these causes of death. METHODS: Data on all-cause firearm, drug overdose, and motor vehicle accident deaths were obtained from the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for the year 2018. Age-specific death rates were used to estimate the cumulative risk of firearm, drug overdose

Firearm bullet settling into the lumbar spinal canal without causing neurological deficit: A report of two cases.

BACKGROUND: Uncertainty still exists regarding the treatment of the patients presenting with gunshot wounds to the spine. Neurological insults, cerebrospinal fluid fistula, infection, lead or copper toxicity, migration of bullets, and spinal instability are included among the common challenging issues. CASE DESCRIPTION: An 18-year-old woman was admitted with low back pain following a gunshot injury five days ago. She was neurologically intact. Radiological examinations showed that a bullet was settled in L4-5 disc space. The bullet was removed with a unilateral L4-5 partial hemilaminectomy an

Aggression and attitudes toward firearm violence among high-risk youth: the moderating influence of psychological distress.

BACKGROUND: Firearm violence remains a critical public health crisis that disproportionately affects Black children and youth, National data show that Black children experience firearm homicide rates roughly eight times higher than White children, and Black males ages 18–24 face rates nearly 23 times higher than their White peers. Although aggression is a well-established correlate of attitudes supportive of gun violence, far less is known about how cognitive–emotional processes and states (e.g., psychological distress) shape these associations among youth frequently exposed to community viole

Dual pandemic of firearm injury and COVID-19 in Central and Southeastern Ohio: An interrupted time series analysis.

Firearm injuries increased as the United States faced the COVID-19 pandemic, a phenomenon some refer to as the "dual pandemic." This study examines how one regional trauma system fared during the initial months of the dual pandemic and explores potential explanatory mechanisms of the surge of firearm injuries during the COVID-19 period. We used an interrupted time series model to compare quarterly data from 2016-2021 from the COTS (formerly known as the Central Ohio Trauma System) Regional Trauma Registry to examine the number of firearm injuries, mistriage rates of firearm-injured patients, i

Not a firearm: A case report of a fatal penetrating pseudo-ballistic neck injury from defective airbag deployment.

Fatal injuries caused by defective airbag inflators are increasingly recognized as a distinct forensic and medicolegal issue. We describe the case of a 51-year-old male driver who was transported by emergency medical services following a low-speed frontal collision with a palm tree and was declared dead on arrival at the hospital. Review of surveillance footage showed that the driver abruptly swerved in an attempt to avoid a motorcyclist immediately before impact. Emergency services were alerted by witnesses, and police investigation documented limited frontal damage localized to the front bum

Firearm violence and racial capitalism: A conceptual framework for understanding the persistence and prevalence of gun violence in the United States.

Firearm violence is a leading cause of death in the United States and is marked by profound racial and socioeconomic disparities. Existing research has identified many of the conditions that make interpersonal firearm violence more likely, and intervention research shows that firearm regulation, targeted policing, and community-based programs can reduce harm. Yet firearm violence remains high, persistent, and unequally distributed. This article develops a racial capitalism framework to explain that persistence. Building on structural racism approaches, it asks how the conditions associated wit
