Long-read metagenomic characterization of the microbial DNA and resistome recovered from a peracetic acid immersion chiller in a commercial poultry processing facility: a pilot study.

Peracetic acid (PAA)-based immersion chillers are a critical pathogen intervention in commercial poultry processing, yet the microbial DNA recoverable from these systems remains poorly characterized. Here, we applied long-read Oxford Nanopore Technology (ONT) metagenomics to characterize the taxonomic composition, resistance gene content and mobile element context of the microbial DNA recovered from the mid-stage immersion chiller of a commercial poultry processing facility. From 14.47 GB of sequencing data (median Q-score 19.1), we reconstructed three near-complete metagenome-assembled genome

[Animal and human bites in Iceland.].

Information on incidence, epidemiology and complications of human and animal bites in Nordic countries is limited, but these injuries can carry serious infectious complications. We conducted a prospective study at the Borgarspitalinn Emergency Department (ED) from August 1991 to July 1992. During this time 145 individuals entered the ED due to bites (accounting for ~0.4% of all admissions to the ED); 66 subjects (46%) had been bitten by dogs (41 provoked), 29 (20%) by cats, 34 (23%) by humans and 16 (11%) by other animals (horse, rabbit, hamster, rat, parrot, piranha fish, guinea pig, mink). Role of zebrafish NLRC5 in antiviral response and transcriptional regulation of MHC related genes.

Intracellular NOD-like receptors (NLRs) are emerging as critical regulators of innate and adaptive immune responses. Although the NLR family member NLRC5 is functionally defined, the role of NLRC5 in regulating innate immune signaling has been controversial in mammals, and is poorly understood in teleost fish. In the present study, we report the functional characterization of zebrafish NLRC5. The cloned NLRC5 consists of 6435 bp which encodes 1746 amino acids. The N-terminal effector-binding domain of zebrafish NLRC5 is absent which is different from all other human NLRs. Fluorescence microsco

Carbenicillin plus cefamandole in the treatment of infections in patients with cancer.

The combination of carbenicillin plus cefamandole was administered to 88 patients with cancer during 116 evaluable episodes of fever. The overall response rate to carbenicillin plus cefamandole for the 116 episodes was 57%. There were 60 documented infections, of which 60% responded to this combination of antibiotics. The response rate was only 43% in patients with pneumonia. The etiologic agent was identified during 38 infections, of which 74% responded to carbenicillin plus cefamandole. Responses occurred less frequently in patients with neutropenia than in those without neutropenia and less

Caffeic Acid Phenethyl Ester Alleviates Alcohol-Induced Inflammation Associated with Pancreatic Secretion and Gut Microbiota in Zebrafish.

Caffeic acid phenethyl ester (CAPE) is identified to be an efficacious bioactive polyphenol in propolis for ameliorating glucose and lipid metabolism disorders and inflammation. In this study, an alcohol-induced zebrafish inflammation model was established. CAPE treatments at different concentrations (0.04, 0.2, and 1.0 μg/mL) were administered to alcohol-exposed zebrafish to investigate the underlying mechanisms of alleviating alcohol-induced liver inflammation using transcriptomic analysis and 16S rRNA gene sequencing methods. The results indicated that CAPE decreased the expressions of TNF-

Construction of an ideotype root system architecture of subsurface flow constructed wetland macrophytes by vertical spatial stress: strengthening of rhizosphere effects and determination of appropriate substrate depth.

Strengthening rhizosphere effects to enhance pollutant removal is a hotspot of constructed wetlands (CWs) research in recent years, and improving the root traits and metabolic capacity of macrophytes is crucial for strengthening rhizosphere effects. In the field experiment, two types of subsurface flow (SSF) CWs (CW10 and CW20, with substrate depths of 10 and 20 cm, respectively) under the vertical spatial stress of roots (VSSR) and two types of non-VSSR SSF CWs (CW40 and CW60) were adopted with Typha orientalis as cultivated plants to investigate the variability of root development, metabolis

Potential hydrocarbon-degrading microorganisms in Baltic Sea sediments.

The spill of crude oil and other petroleum derivatives comprises the majority of ocean pollution and leads to acute and chronic damage to exposed marine organisms and coastal ecosystems. Some bacteria and fungi are known to biodegrade petroleum hydrocarbons in terrestrial and aquatic environments. In this study, sediment samples from the Baltic Sea, collected near an oil terminal, and from the Curonian Lagoon strait, an area under high anthropogenic and shipping pressure, were explored as a source of microorganisms with potential for hydrocarbon degradation. Next-generation sequencing showed t

Effects of Different Rearing Methods on the Intestinal Morphology, Intestinal Metabolites, and Gut Microbiota of Lueyang Black-Bone Chickens.

The Lueyang black-bone chicken represents a distinct indigenous avian breed native to China and it is a slow-growing broiler breed. The gut, whose primary function is to digest food and absorb nutrients, is also home to a large and diverse microbial community. The intestinal morphology, intestinal metabolites, and gut microbiota are critical determinants of nutrient utilization efficiency and immune health in poultry. This study investigates the impact of two distinct rearing modalities-cage-raised (CR) and cage-free (CF)-on the intestinal morphology, intestinal metabolites, and gut microbiota

Assessing the hepatotoxicity of phosphogypsum leachate in zebrafish (Danio rerio).

The improper disposal of large amounts of phosphogypsum generated during the production process of the phosphorus chemical industry (PCI) still exists. The leachate formed by phosphogypsum stockpiles could pose a threat to the ecological environment and human health. Nevertheless, information regarding the harmful effects of phosphogypsum leachate on organisms is still limited. Herein, the physicochemical characteristics of phosphogypsum leachate were analyzed, and its toxicity effect on zebrafish (Danio rerio), particularly in terms of hepatotoxicity and potential mechanisms, were evaluated.

Detection of Aminoglycoside Resistant Bacteria in Sludge Samples From Norwegian Drinking Water Treatment Plants.

Through a culture-based approach using sludge from drinking water treatment plants, this study reports on the presence of aminoglycoside resistant bacteria at 23 different geographical locations in Norway. Sludge samples are derived from a large environmental area including drinking water sources and their surrounding catchment areas. Aminoglycoside resistant bacteria were detected at 18 of the sample sites. Only five samples did not show any growth of isolates resistant to the selected aminoglycosides, kanamycin and gentamycin. There was a statistically significant correlation between the num

Elizabethkingia miricola as an opportunistic oral pathogen associated with superinfectious complications in humoral immunodeficiency: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Elizabethkingia miricola is a rare Gram-negative bacterium found in water and clinical specimens. Typical culturing methods often misidentify Elizabethkingia spp. as Flavobacterium or Chryseobacterium. Although diagnosis is based on culturing samples taken from sterile sites, such as blood, a proper identification of this bacterium requires an expertise that goes beyond the capabilities of a typical clinical laboratory. CASE PRESENTATION: A 35-year-old woman diagnosed with common variable immunodeficiency was admitted to our center. Previous treatment with antibiotics (amoxicillin

Recent developments in carbapenems.

Carbapenems are beta-lactam antibiotics characterised by the presence of a beta-lactam ring with a carbon instead of sulfone in the 4-position of the thyazolidinic moiety. The first carbapenem to be utilised in therapy was imipenem, the N-formimidoyl derivative of thienamycin. Imipenem is coadministered with cilastatin, an inhibitor of human renal dehydropeptidase I, as imipenem is hydrolysed by this enzyme. Meropenem was the first carbapenem with a 1-beta-methyl group and 2-thio pyrrolidinyl moiety, which renders this antibiotic stable to renal dehydropeptidase I. Other carbapenems for parent

[Evaluation of Mycobacterium kansasii isolates from a clinical laboratory in a city hospital].

Fifteen isolates of Mycobacterium kansasii in Showa University Fujigaoka Hospital between 1982 and 1995 were investigated. Comparing by gender, 13 were isolated from male patients and only two were isolated from female patients. The average of cases was 48 years old and 14 out of 15 cases (93%) were isolated from respiratory tract specimens. The rate of the smear- and culture-positives was 64%, which was significantly higher than that (26%) of M. avium complex (p < 0.01 by chi 2 test). All 4 isolates were susceptible to rifampicin (10 micrograms/ml) by drug susceptibility testing using Ogawa e

Proteoglycans and chondroitin sulfates from human multiple chondroma (enchondromatosis).

1. This paper reports the structural analysis of proteoglycans and mucopolysaccharides extracted from a human multiple enchondroma (enchondromatosis), a benign cartilage tumor, where growth, but no calcification takes place. The tumors were located inside the phalanges of both hands of a 22-year-old patient and were obtained after surgery. 2. The proteoglycans of chondromas contain only a small amount of keratan sulfate (1.3% of total mucopolysaccharide) and the chondroitin sulfate is composed of 4- and 6-sulfated disaccharide units in approximately equivalent amounts, forming hybrid polymeric

Environmental DNA/RNA for non-invasive early detection and monitoring of pathogen dynamics in Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS).

Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (RAS) provide efficient fish production with reduced water use and precise environmental control. However, their closed design facilitates susceptibility to pathogen persistence and disease outbreaks, highlighting the need for effective monitoring and treatments. Over a 12-week study, water samples (purified eDNA/eRNA) were evaluated in two freshwater RAS units at a commercial pre-smolt Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) farm as a non-lethal and non-invasive alternative to tissue samples for early pathogen detection. A key aim was furthermore to elucidate the infec

Multi-phase fate and removal mechanism of acetamiprid in a planted coastal wetland mesocosm system: A 'dual-engine' perspective.

Acetamiprid (ACE), a widely used neonicotinoid insecticide, poses persistent ecological risks to coastal ecosystems. However, its multi-media transformation pathways and the underlying biological drivers in coastal wetlands remain poorly understood. Here, using high resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) based non-target screening integrated with Partial Least Squares Path Modeling (PLS-PM), we systematically investigated the ACE migration, biotransformation, and removal mechanisms in a mesocosm wetland system planted with three salt-tolerant hydrophytes: Phragmites australis (PA), Iris pseudacor

Bacillus spizizenii DN and microbial consortia biostimulation followed by gamma irradiation for efficient textile wastewater treatment.

Textile wastewater still poses a huge environmental problem due to its high water consumption and high effluent release that is full of toxic chemicals. In the present study, different approaches were studied to layout an operating procedure for textile wastewater treatment in order to obtain treated wastewater that is safe for non-potable uses. Our approach depended on (1) co-substrate to biostimulate indigenous microbial textile wastewater community by adding Tryptone Soy Broth (TSB) and TSB supplemented with 1% glucose, (2) co-culture (bioaugmentation) with Bacillus spizizenii DN cells (pre
