Carbon disulfide: a semiochemical mediating socially-induced diet choice in rats.

Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry revealed the presence of both carbon disulfide (CS2) and carbonyl sulfide (COS) on rat breath. Behavioral experiments indicated that rats exposed to an unfamiliar diet moistened with CS2, like rats exposed to an unfamiliar diet placed on the fur of an anesthetized rat, subsequently exhibited enhanced preference for the unfamiliar diet. Rats in experimental groups: (a) interacted for 30 min with a wad of cotton batting powdered with one of two unfamiliar foods (either Diet A or Diet B) and moistened with a dilute, aqueous CS2 solution, (b) ate Diets A and B

Dietary education tools for South Asians with diabetes.

PURPOSE: South Asian immigrants to Canada are at high risk for developing diabetes, and culturally relevant diet counselling tools are needed. We examined perceived needs and preferences for diet counselling resources based on the newly revised Canadian Diabetes Association meal planning guide. METHODS: Five focus groups of individuals from different regions of South Asia (n=53) discussed portion size estimating methods, cultural values and holidays, food group classifications, and common South Asian foods. A focus panel with dietitians (n=8) provided insight on current diabetes education met

Eating green together: A qualitative study to explore children's motivations and role in household decision making for environmentally sustainable diets.

A transition towards more environmentally sustainable dietary patterns is crucial to mitigate the impact of current dietary habits on global climate change. Children represent a key target group in this transition, since they are in the process of developing their dietary habits and environmental attitudes, and they will bear the long-term consequences of today's dietary choices. Therefore, this study aims to explore the motivations of children aged 8 to 12 for environmentally sustainable dietary patterns, as well as how they communicate about and attempt to influence their parent sustainable

Energetic challenges unmask the role of ovarian hormones in orchestrating ingestive and sex behaviors.

Effects of ovarian hormones on sex and ingestive behavior are well studied, and yet, their role in diverting attention from food to sex has not been examined directly, possibly because these functions are masked under conditions of excessive food abundance typical of the laboratory. Female Syrian hamsters were either fed ad libitum or food-restricted to 75% of their ad libitum intake for 8days and then tested every day of the estrous cycle for their preference for males versus food, food hoarding and food intake in an apparatus designed to mimic aspects of their natural habitat. The food-restr

Knowledge About Food Insecurity Among Dental Practitioners: Preliminary Findings From the National Dental Practice-Based Research Network.

Food insecurity is a household-level economic and social condition characterized by limited access to nutritious food. This study explored dental practitioners' views on food insecurity screening and its impact on oral health. A five-question survey ("Quick Poll") was conducted through the National Dental Practice-Based Research Network (PBRN) in the United States. A total of 332 dental practitioners responded. Preferences for food insecurity screening in dental practice settings showed substantial variability: 30% in favor, 39% neutral, and 29% against. When identifying the primary oral healt

Concerned but confused: Australian consumers' awareness, understanding, and recognition of ultra-processed foods.

Calls to reduce ultra-processed food (UPF) consumption through population health strategies such as front-of-pack labelling are increasing. Gaining insight into consumer perceptions may help inform effective strategies in this area. This study explored (i) Australian adults' awareness, understanding, and recognition of UPFs and (ii) their interest in front-of-pack labelling to signpost UPFs. Twelve online focus groups were conducted with 112 Australian adults (49 % women, 78 % residing in metropolitan areas). Discussions covered food selection criteria, familiarity with 'processed' and 'ultra-

Testing the Abbreviated Food Technology Neophobia Scale and its relation to satisfaction with food-related life in university students.

The aims of this study were to test the relationships between food neophobia, satisfaction with food-related life and food technology neophobia, distinguishing consumer segments according to these variables and characterizing them according to willingness to purchase food produced with novel technologies. A survey was conducted with 372 university students (mean aged=20.4years, SD=2.4). The questionnaire included the Abbreviated version of the Food Technology Neophobia Scale (AFTNS), Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS), and a 6-item version of the Food Neophobia Scale (FNS). The Impact of Restaurant Menu Eco Labels on Consumer Meal Selections: An RCT.

INTRODUCTION: Food systems account for ∼30% of the greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change. Climate labels on restaurant menus may help consumers decrease their food-related climate impact and improve meal nutrition given that environmentally sustainable diets are also healthier. This study evaluated the degree to which different climate labels promoted healthier and lower climate impact food choices. STUDY DESIGN: This was an online RCT conducted in 2024, analyzed in 2025. SETTING/PARTICIPANTS: A national sample of 6,221 adults benchmarked to the U.S. Census on sex, race,

How Does Food Taste in Anorexia and Bulimia Nervosa? A Protocol for a Quasi-Experimental, Cross-Sectional Design to Investigate Taste Aversion or Increased Hedonic Valence of Food in Eating Disorders.

Background: Despite on-going efforts to better understand dysregulated eating, the olfactory-gustatory deficits and food preferences in eating disorders (ED), and the mechanisms underlying the perception of and responses to food properties in anorexia nervosa (AN) and bulimia nervosa (BN) remain largely unknown; both during the course of the illness and compared to healthy populations. It is, therefore, necessary to systematically investigate the gustatory perception and hedonics of taste in patients with AN and BN. To this end, we will examine whether aversions to the taste of high-calorie fo

Regulating food service in North Carolina's long-term care facilities.

Other commentaries in this issue of the North Carolina Medical Journal describe innovative food and dining practices in some of our state's long-term care facilities. Federal and state regulations do not prohibit these innovations, and DFS supports the concept of "enhancements" of the dining experience in these facilities. The Division of Facilities Services, therefore, encourages facilities to assess and operationalize various dining methods, allowing residents to select their foods, dining times, dining partners, and other preferences. The regulations allow facilities to utilize innovative d

College cafeteria snack food purchases become less healthy with each passing week of the semester.

OBJECTIVE: Snacks, stress and parties all contribute to the weight gain – the elusive ‘Freshman 15’ – that some college-goers unfortunately experience. The present study examines how a` la carte snack choice changes on a university campus during each progressing week of the academic calendar. DESIGN: How a` la carte snack choices change on a university campus with each progressing week of the academic calendar was examined. SETTING: The data were collected from three large cafeterias (or dining halls) on Cornell University’s campus during four semesters (Fall 2006, Spring 2007, Fall 2007 and

Low reported taste function is associated with low preference for high protein products in advanced oesophagogastric cancer patients undergoing palliative chemotherapy.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Cancer patients undergoing palliative chemotherapy can experience a variety of chemosensory and food preference changes which may impact their nutritional status and quality of life. However, evidence of these changes in oesophagogastric cancer (OGC) patients is currently mostly qualitative and not supported by quantitative data. The aim of this study was to assess how self-reported and objective taste and smell function and food preferences change over time during chemotherapy in OGC patients. METHODS: This observational study included 15 advanced OGC patients planned for

Toward the assessment of food toxicity for celiac patients: characterization of monoclonal antibodies to a main immunogenic gluten peptide.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Celiac disease is a permanent intolerance to gluten prolamins from wheat, barley, rye and, in some patients, oats. Partially digested gluten peptides produced in the digestive tract cause inflammation of the small intestine. High throughput, immune-based assays using monoclonal antibodies specific for these immunotoxic peptides would facilitate their detection in food and enable monitoring of their enzymatic detoxification. Two monoclonal antibodies, G12 and A1, were developed against a highly immunotoxic 33-mer peptide. The potential of each antibody for quantifying food

Cereal aversion in behaviourally resistant house mice in Birmingham, UK.

In 1986, house mice in a small defined area of inner Birmingham were reported as not taking a variety of rodenticides from bait containers, a phenomenon labelled 'behavioural resistance'. This study investigated behavioural resistance by comparing the food preferences of West Midlands behaviourally resistant (WMBR) mice with those of normal (BC) mice. Nine bait boxes each containing one of nine different foods (cheese, chicken, tuna fish, peanut butter, canary seed, Cat stars, wheat, PCD (MOD) pellets and Non-tox) were introduced to 12 WMBR and seven BC sites (Experiment 1). The experiment was

A causality dilemma: ARFID, malnutrition, psychosis, and hypomagnesemia.

We present a novel case of a woman with coincident occurrence of auditory and visual hallucinations, electrolyte disturbances, chloride unresponsive alkalosis, and an eating disorder. The patient was ultimately diagnosed with Gitelman syndrome comorbid with schizophreniform disorder and avoidant restrictive food intake disorder. Eating disorders are often associated with electrolyte abnormalities which, in turn, can cause or contribute to other neuropsychiatric symptoms. At the same time, psychotic disorders can lead to food intake aversions or overconsumption of fluids with associated effects

The Most Attractive Is Not Always the Preferred: Lessons From Necrophagous Dung Beetle Assemblages in a Region of the Central Amazon.

Resource attractiveness and preference is determinant to assess how biodiversity is structured in different ecosystems. Necrophagy is the alternative or complementary dietary habit of dung beetles, but a few studies have focused on evaluating how different carrion types attract different species. The goal of this study was to assess the effect of carrion type on attractiveness and preference of dung beetle taxonomic diversity in a region of Central Amazon. Pitfall traps baited with bovine spleen, chicken liver, and fish (freshwater sardine) were installed. Bait attractiveness was estimated thr

Two cases of food aversion with semantic dementia.

Accounts of altered eating behavior in semantic dementia generally emphasize gluttony and abnormal food preferences. Here we describe two female patients with no past history of eating disorders who developed early prominent aversion to food in the context of an otherwise typical semantic dementia syndrome. One patient (aged 57) presented features in line with anorexia nervosa while the second patient (aged 58) presented with a syndrome more suggestive of bulimia nervosa. These cases add to the growing spectrum of apparently dichotomous behavior patterns in the frontotemporal dementias and ill
