Homelessness is a pervasive challenge caused by poverty which continues to grow in economically developed countries, posing significant health impacts (Fazel et al., Lancet, 384: 1529-1540, 2014). While food security related to poverty and low income has been investigated, this review specifically explores the experience of food security during and following homelessness. Given the fact that the health of individuals who experience homelessness is known to be poor and the importance of nutrition, this is a necessary contribution. Informed by a health equity lens, this review synthesises the fi

INTRODUCTION: Increasing food and nutritional inequities are apparent in urban settings across Low- and Middle-Income Countries (LMICs), along with nutrition transition towards ultra-processed diets high in fat, sugar, and salt. In urban informal settlements, characterized by insecurity and inadequate housing and infrastructure, food systems dynamics and their nutritional implications are poorly understood.
OBJECTIVES: This paper explores the food system determinants of food and nutrition security in urban informal settlements in LMICs with the goal of identifying effective approaches and ent

OBJECTIVE: To examine the relationship between household food insecurity (FI) and children's involvement in family meal choices and food preparation, used as proxies for children's food skills, and to explore gender differences within these associations.
DESIGN: Households were classified as food-secure or food-insecure using the six-item, short-form Household Food Security Survey Module. Children's involvement in family meal choices and food preparation were treated as proxies for children's food skills. Mixed-effects multinomial logistic regression models were used.
SETTING: Public schools

This study advocates for the strategic repositioning of local animal genetic resources, re-evaluating them not merely as remnants of cultural heritage but as critical biological archives essential for ensuring future food security. The contemporary livestock sector is navigating a precarious transition as global production systems encounter an ecosystem based bottleneck induced by decades of intensive monoculture. By contrasting the physiological and genetic characteristics of high yield industrial breeds with the inherent resilience of local genotypes, the research highlights a fundamental tr

Increased agricultural production is an urgent issue. Projected global population is 9 million people by mid of this century. Estimation projects death of 1 million people for lack of food quality (micronutrient deficit) and quantity (protein deficit). Majority of these people will be living in developing countries. Other global challenges include shrinking cultivable lands, salinity, and flooding due to climate changes, new emerging pathogens, and pests. These affect crop production. Furthermore, they are major threats to crop genetic resources and food security. Genetic diversity in cultivat

Up to half of people living with HIV in resource-rich settings experience moderate to severe food insecurity. Food insecurity, in turn, has been linked to adverse health outcomes including poor antiretroviral adherence, poor HIV viral suppression, frailty, and mortality. We estimated the prevalence of food insecurity among 649 adults living with HIV and recruited from community-based AIDS service organizations in Ontario, Canada. Food security was assessed using the Canadian Household Food Security module. We used logistic regression modeling to identify demographic, socioeconomic, and psychos

BACKGROUND: Food insecurity is defined as having limited access to food, while nutrition insecurity is characterized as a lack of consistent access to affordable and acceptable foods that support health, manage or prevent disease, and meet daily nutritional needs. College students face increased risks of food and nutrition insecurity, yet the issue is understudied. This study examined the patterns of food and nutrition insecurity among students at a public university across main and regional campuses.
METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional survey using Qualtrics for participant recruitment i

Among the 14.6% of American households experiencing food insecurity, approximately 2 million are occupied by older adults. Food insecurity among older adults has been linked to poor health, lower cognitive function, and poor mental health outcomes. While evidence of the association between individual or household-level factors and food insecurity has been documented, the role of neighborhood-level factors is largely understudied. This study uses data from a representative sample of 1,870 New York City senior center participants in 2008 to investigate the relationship between three neighborhood

INTRODUCTION: This study explores maternal perceptions of stunting, food security challenges, and child-feeding efforts in rural Indonesia, where socioeconomic constraints and traditional practices significantly impact child nutritional outcomes.
METHOD: Utilizing a descriptive phenomenological approach, the study conducted in-depth interviews with 16 mothers of stunted toddlers to explore their daily experiences regarding food access and family sanitation, achieving data saturation.
RESULTS: Three themes emerged. First, mothers view stunting as nutritional deficiency and growth failure caus

Families experiencing homelessness struggle with food access and face a high burden of nutrition-related diseases. We assessed feasibility of Feastworthy, a prepared meal delivery program for families in motel-shelters with meals made from surplus food from local colleges. We used pre-and post-program surveys and semi-structured interviews, comparing participating families with families in a nearby shelter. During the three-month pilot, Feastworthy delivered 4,875 meals to 38 families; 33 families participated in the study (20 intervention and 13 control). Families reported that the motel-shel

This study examines how different land use systems are associated with resilience to drought-induced food insecurity in Ethiopia using a comparative case study of three districts representing monocropping (Bale), agroforestry (Sidama), and woodlot-based systems (Awi). The analysis integrates crop damage data from the Central Statistical Agency (CSA) with food aid priority classifications and postdrought food security outcomes from the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) and food aid priority area map from World Food Program (WFP), Inter-Agency Humanitarian Evaluation (IAHE) and

"Spend Less. Eat Well. Feel Better." (SLEWFB) is a 3-hour intervention designed to improve food resource management ability, health, and food security status. This program efficacy trial targeted clients seeking financial aid to prevent homelessness. A randomized controlled design using a 1-hour food safety intervention as a control group was used. Four variables were targeted over a 30-day time period: (1) food security status, (2) basic financial management, (3) average fruit and vegetable intake, and (4) goal accomplishment. Repeated-measures analysis of variance and chi-square analysis wer

BACKGROUND: Infants who are HIV-Exposed Uninfected (HEU) may experience adverse growth outcomes compared to those HIV-Unexposed Uninfected (HUU). However, there are limited data from the context of universal antiretroviral therapy (ART) and promotion of extended breastfeeding (BF) for infants HEU. We compared the growth of infants HEU and HUU enrolled January 2017-July 2018 from the same community in Cape Town, South Africa.
METHODS: Data were collected during pregnancy and at seven days, 10 weeks, six and 12 months postpartum. Infant birth weight and length were converted to weight-for-age a

BACKGROUND: Agricultural interventions are often recommended to address undernutrition in subsistence farming communities. However, intensified agriculture exposure can increase soil transmitted helminth (STH) infections, which are linked with poor child growth. This study examined impacts of the VERASAN public health and agricultural intervention program on preschool child growth attainment (HAZ and WAZ) and relative growth velocity over 7 months [change in height-for-age (∆HAD) and weight-for-age (∆WAD) difference].
METHODS: VERASAN was initiated in 15 subsistence farming communities in rur

Equitable and sustainable governance of small-scale fisheries (SSFs) is essential for achieving food security and conservation in coastal areas. Yet in increasingly industrialized oceans, competition and conflict with large-scale fisheries (LSFs) threaten the contributions of SSFs to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. Here we have developed a small-scale and industrial fisheries interaction index and applied it to 126 countries using 2 recent global datasets. Vulnerability to conflict is highest in countries where SSFs are vital for nutrition, but governance is weak, especially

LGBTQ young adults are at increased risk for food insecurity and disordered eating behaviors. Food literacy is a related construct that may also impact disordered eating; however, research on these relationships is limited. It is also not well understood if food security and food literacy relate to disordered eating behaviors differently for LGBTQ and heterosexual individuals. The current study examined these constructs in a sample of college students (n = 572; 22 % LGBTQ), as well as examined sexual orientation as a moderator in the relationship between food insecurity/food literacy and disor

OBJECTIVE: The first year of life is a critical period when nutrient intakes can affect long-term health outcomes. Although household food insecurity may result in inadequate nutrient intakes or a higher risk of obesity, no studies have comprehensively assessed nutrient intakes of infants from food insecure households. This study aimed to investigate how infant nutrient intakes and BMI differ by household food security.
DESIGN: Cross-sectional analysis of the First Foods New Zealand study of infants aged 7-10 months. Two 24-h diet recalls assessed nutrient intakes. 'Usual' intakes were calcul

BACKGROUND: The most recent statistics indicate that the prevalence of food insecurity in the United States is double that in Canada, but the extent to which the nutrition implications of this problem differ between the countries is not known.
OBJECTIVE: This study was undertaken to compare adequacy of nutrient intakes in relation to household food insecurity among youth and adults in Canada and the United States.
METHODS: Data from comparable nationally representative surveys, the 2004 Canadian Community Health Survey and the 2003-2006 NHANES, were used to estimate prevalences of inadequate
