BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Proven behavioral assessment strategies for testing potential therapeutic agents in rat stroke models are needed. Few studies include tasks that demand higher levels of sensorimotor and cognitive function. Because behavioral outcome and rate of recovery vary among ischemia models, there is a need to characterize and compare performance on specific tasks across models.
METHODS: To this end, sensorimotor and cognitive deficits were assessed during a 5-week period after either permanent proximal middle cerebral artery occlusion (pMCAO) or permanent distal middle cerebral

Two cases of severe scapulohumeral osteoarthritis in Miniature ponies are described, one bilateral and the other unilateral. The condition is thought to occur in miniature breeds as a result of scapulohumeral dysplasia. The presentation in one of the ponies was unusal: it refused to pick up either fore limb, with progression to a uniquely bizarre gait with narrow forelimb placement, an arched back and widely placed hindlimbs camped well forward under the body. The other pony was presented for an acute unilateral non-weight bearing forelimb lameness. Response to analgesia in both cases was poor

Extreme climatic events (ECEs) such as hurricanes have been hypothesized to be a major driving force of natural selection. Recent studies argue that, following strong hurricane disturbance, Anolis lizards in the Caribbean undergo selection for traits such as longer forelimbs or smaller body sizes that improve their clinging ability to their substrates increasing their chances of surviving hurricane wind gusts. Some authors challenge the generalization of this hypothesis arguing that other mechanisms may explain these phenotypic changes or that they may not necessarily be generalizable across s

Early in Parkinson's disease (PD) physical activity becomes difficult resulting in a more sedentary lifestyle. Clinical and experimental studies have found that increased activity following striatal dopamine loss leads to increased motor function. Decreased physical activity early in PD along with findings that increased physical activity results in functional improvement suggested to us that decreased physical activity during the period of nigrostriatal degeneration may not only be a symptom of the injury, but may also act to potentiate the degeneration. The female German Holstein calf presented here was born with a complete additional forelimb. The forelimb's attachment point was between the shoulder blades. This is referred to as notomelia, a form of polymelia. On the 15th day of the calf's life, the additional limb was removed surgically. The surgery and wound healing progressed in a satisfactory manner. The cytogenetic tests did not reveal any chromosomal abnormalities. Genetic testing showed no indication of presence of a chimera that could be the cause of the anomaly. Antigens of the Schmallenberg virus were not detected, an antibody tit

Associated fore- and hindlimb parts of five individuals are known from the hominid Plio-Pleistocene fossil collections in Africa. Four of these have been classified as Australopithecus and show definite evidence that in comparison with humans, forelimbs were relatively large and hindlimbs were relatively small. The fourth individual, placed in the genus Homo, has human proportions. These findings do not necessarily imply locomotor differences: the forelimbs may have been relatively long in Australopithecus simply because they were as yet not completely reduced from their generalized hominoid a

The Surinam toad (Pipa pipa) is a fully aquatic, tongueless pipid frog that captures prey using rapid suction feeding coordinated by the forelimbs. The digit tips bear distinctive lobed structures whose function has been unknown. Here we characterize the morphology, mechanical sensitivity, peripheral innervation, central representation, and behavioral function of these digit tip lobes using scanning electron microscopy, von Frey threshold measurements, in vivo electrophysiology of the brachial nerve and optic tectum, and high-speed video analysis (1000 fps). SEM reveals a progressive quadrific

Dynamic load distribution and landing patterns play an important role in equine orthopaedics. The aim of this study was to analyse dynamic load distribution and hoof landing patterns of sound Standardbreds. Twenty-four sound, unshod Standardbreds were walked and trotted over a pressure plate to obtain the peak vertical force (PVF), vertical impulse (VI) and stance time (ST) of both forelimbs. Asymmetry indices between both forelimbs were calculated and the dynamic medio-lateral and toe-heel load distribution of the forelimbs were compared between normal, toed-in and toed-out horses. The hoof l

CASE DESCRIPTION: 9 first-lactation dairy cows in a closed dairy herd had swelling in the forelimbs and forelimb lameness. Mycoplasmal arthritis and mastitis were diagnosed.
CLINICAL FINDINGS: Swelling of the carpal joint, diffuse subcutaneous edema from the carpal to metacarpophalangeal joints, and forelimb lameness were evident in 9 first-lactation cows 7 to 21 days after parturition. Diagnostic testing revealed that 3 of 3 bulk-tank milk samples, 3 milk samples from cows with clinical mastitis, 2 fluid samples obtained from arthritic joints, and samples from the lungs and spleen of a cow t

Human mutations in TBX5, a gene encoding a T-box transcription factor, and SALL4, a gene encoding a zinc-finger transcription factor, cause similar upper limb and heart defects. Here we show that Tbx5 regulates Sall4 expression in the developing mouse forelimb and heart; mice heterozygous for a gene trap allele of Sall4 show limb and heart defects that model human disease. Tbx5 and Sall4 interact both positively and negatively to finely regulate patterning and morphogenesis of the anterior forelimb and heart. Thus, a positive and negative feed-forward circuit between Tbx5 and Sall4 ensures pre

A 6-year-old, male Labrador retriever was presented for lameness of the right forelimb. The lameness occurred 5 years after the dog was surgically treated for osteochondritis dissecans (OCD) of the caudal right humeral head. Radiographs revealed an expansile, osteolytic lesion occupying the entire caudal half of the right humeral head, and biopsy confirmed the diagnosis of osteosarcoma. Forelimb amputation was performed. Histopathology of the lesion and associated articular cartilage revealed neoplastic osteoblasts extensively infiltrating the marrow space adjacent to scar tissue associated wi

BACKGROUND: Standardized and repeatable assessment of feline gait remains challenging, highlighting the need for controlled measurement systems such as pressure-sensitive treadmills.
OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to compare kinetic and temporospatial gait parameters in healthy cats walking on a treadmill operated in standing vs. running mode. We hypothesized that no significant differences would be observed between modes.
METHODS: Ten healthy adult cats were enrolled in a prospective, controlled crossover study. Inclusion criteria included body weight >4.0 kg, body condition score (BCS) 4-6/9

Recently, several capsular stroke models have been reported with different targets of destruction. This study was performed to establish an accurate internal capsule (IC) target for capsular stroke modeling in rats. We injected adeno-associated virus serotype 5 (AAV)-CaMKII-EYFP into forelimb motor cortex and AAV-CaMKII-mCherry into hindlimb motor cortex (n = 9) to anterogradely trace the pyramidal fibers and map their somatotopic distribution in the IC. On the basis of the neural tracing results, we created photothrombotic infarct lesions in rat forelimb and hindlimb motor fiber (FMF and HMF)

A significant number of patients suffering from traumatic brain injury (TBI) have a high blood alcohol level at the time of injury. Furthermore, drinking alcohol in a binge-like pattern is now recognized as a national problem, leading to a greater likelihood of being injured. Our objective was to determine the consequences of a binge paradigm of alcohol intoxication at the time of TBI on long-term functional outcome using a sensitive test of sensorimotor function. We trained adult, male, Sprague Dawley rats on the skilled forelimb reaching task and then administered a single binge dose of etha

Until recently, little was known about the rostral part of the dorsal premotor cortex (PMdr). In the present study, somatotopical representations of the PMdr were electrophysiologically identified in the macaque monkey, and the distribution of corticostriatal input from the forelimb region of the PMdr was analyzed in relation to its thalamocortical and intracortical (with the frontal lobe) connections. Results have revealed that (1) the forelimb is represented predominantly in the PMdr, while only a few sites representing other body parts are distributed as embedded within the forelimb represe

The present study was conducted to establish the window of opportunity for the administration of a regimen of MgCl2 pharmacotherapy following focal injury to the brain. Rats were subjected to unilateral electrolytic lesions of the sensorimotor cortex (SMC) and administered a regimen of MgCl2 (1.0 mmol/kg) or 0.9% saline (1.0 ml/kg) beginning either 15 min, 8 h or 24 h after injury. Subsequent injections were administered 24 and 72 h after the initial treatment. Behavioral testing assessed recovery of function on several sensorimotor behaviors for 24 days following injury. The results of the pr

The neuroprotective potential of halothane anesthesia was investigated following unilateral electrolytic lesions to the forelimb representation area of the sensorimotor cortex (FL-SMC). Previously, it was found that the FL-SMC lesion increases substantially in size when the intact forelimb is immobilized with a plaster of paris cast for the first 7 days postlesion, which forces extreme overuse of the impaired forelimb during a time when nonlethally damaged tissue is vulnerable to behavioral demand. Initially, the purpose of this study was to investigate whether intracisternal infusion of basic

Spinal sensorimotor circuits interact with supraspinal and peripheral inputs to generate quadrupedal locomotion. Ascending and descending spinal pathways ensure coordination between the forelimbs and hindlimbs. Spinal cord injury (SCI) disrupts these pathways. To investigate the control of interlimb coordination and hindlimb locomotor recovery, we performed two lateral thoracic hemisections on opposite sides of the cord (right T5-T6 and left T10-T11) at an interval of approximately two months in eight adult cats. In three cats, the spinal cord was transected at T12-T13. We collected electromyo

BACKGROUND: Systemic administration of acetazolamide blocks nociceptive hyperreflexia induced by pentobarbital. The authors assessed the effect of intrathecal carbonic anhydrase inhibitors (CAIs) on nociceptive reflex enhancement by pentobarbital, propofol, and midazolam.
METHODS: Twenty-seven rats with chronic indwelling subarachnoid catheters were studied. Nociceptive paw reflex latency (PWL) for paw withdrawal from radiant heat was measured in forelimbs and hind limbs. Measurements were obtained under control conditions, 15 min after lumbar intrathecal injection of 10 microl artificial cer

A seven-month-old male Pomeranian presented with left forelimb lameness after a fall. Radiographic assessment confirmed proximal radial head and ulnar comminuted fracture. The initial surgical intervention involved the use of hybrid external skeletal fixation (ESF) to stabilize the radial head, concomitant with the application of a composite of bone morphogenetic protein type 2 (BMP-2)-loaded hydroxyapatite and gelatin microparticles at the fracture site. Although successful radial head healing was achieved, the ESF pinholes caused a defect in the proximal ulnar diaphysis. Subsequently, the ES
