Guided tissue regeneration: comparison of bioabsorbable and non-bioabsorbable membranes. Histologic and histometric study in dogs.

This study examined histologic and histometric responses to 2 bioabsorbable membranes made from a synthetic copolymer of glycolide and lactide. They were tested for their biocompatibility, resorption characteristics, and ability to support periodontal regeneration. Expanded polytetrafluoroethylene (ePTFE) was used as control. Nine fox hound dogs with no periodontal disease were used. They were sedated and their teeth thoroughly scaled and root planed. Plaque control was maintained. Two weeks later, each dog was anesthetized using gas anesthesia. Buccal and lingual mucoperiosteal flaps were ref

A clinician's 3-year experience with perioscopy.

A medical endoscope has been modified for assisting the clinician in subgingival scaling and root planing. The dental endoscope provides real-time indirect visualization of the root surface for aiding the removal of root deposits and biofilm. When the majority of biofilm and visible calculus is removed from the root surface in a periodontal pocket, the pocket will most often close, resulting in a shallow sulcus. Many lesions on single-rooted teeth can be treated successfully with this technique, resulting in a significant reduction in probable pocket depth and a gain in the calibrated attachme

The clinical effectiveness of open versus closed scaling and root planing on multi-rooted teeth.

Scaling and root planing are the most common techniques utilized to achieve a biologically-acceptable root surface. Thorough root debridement is a demanding task, with residual deposits of plaque and calculus a not uncommon finding after instrumentation. This study evaluated the effectiveness of scaling and root planing via a closed versus an open flap approach. Sixty multi-rooted teeth were assigned to one of three groups: untreated controls, closed scaling/root planing, and open flap scaling/root planing. Following debridement, teeth were extracted, immersed in methylene blue, and examined f

Clinical trial of cross-linked human type I collagen as a barrier material in surgical periodontal treatment.

This study was undertaken to evaluate freeze-dried cross-linked human type I collagen when used as a barrier membrane for guided tissue regeneration (GTR) in periodontal surgery. 14 patients with radiographic evidence of bone loss and residual pocketing of > 6 mm on bilaterally matched sites were given preliminary scaling, polishing and oral hygiene instruction before undergoing contralateral flap surgery. At the experimental sites, a collagen membrane was adapted to the root surfaces, extending from 2 mm apical to the bone crest to just subgingival, before replacing the flap and closing with

The effect of an absorbable collagen membrane on the subgingival microflora.

The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of use of an absorbable collagen membrane in guided tissue regeneration (GTR) therapy upon the subgingival microflora. The study group consisted of 12 systemically healthy patients with bilateral mandibular furcation defects with attachment loss > or = 6 mm; one site was randomly assigned for GTR treatment while the contralateral site received surgical flap debridement only. Subgingival plaque samples were collected by paper point on the day of surgery and at 2, 4 and 6 months post-surgery. Three sites were sampled in each patient: a collag

Periodontal-endodontic lesion of a three-rooted maxillary premolar: report of a case.

BACKGROUND: A 43-year-old African American male initially presented for a dental evaluation of a recurrent swelling on the buccal aspect of tooth #12. His medical history was unremarkable except for a 20-pack year history of smoking. He was eventually diagnosed as having a necrotic pulp #12, and received root canal treatment. The patient's problem was unresolved, and he was subsequently referred for a periodontal evaluation with a presumptive diagnosis of a periodontal abscess. METHODS: A flap was reflected from teeth #11 through #15. A buccal furcation invasion was discovered on #12. Shortly

Use of pedicled buccal fat pad in root coverage of severe gingival recession defect.

BACKGROUND: Gingival recession in its localized or generalized form is an undesirable condition resulting in root exposure. Sites exhibiting Miller Class IV gingival recession are not suitable for treatment with surgical root coverage techniques, and their prognoses are very poor with current techniques. The aim of this case report is to establish a new technique for the root coverage of severe gingival recession defects (Miller Class IV) by providing a new source of enough tissue with good blood supply using the pedicled buccal fat pad (PBFP). METHODS: The PBFP was mobilized through an incis
