Factors Associated With Knowledge of Sickle Cell Disease and Haemoglobin Genotype Awareness Among Pregnant Women in Three Health Centres in Libreville and Owendo, Gabon.

INTRODUCTION: In Gabon, screening for sickle cell disease, a hereditary disorder that causes haemolytic anaemia due to the sickling of red blood cells, is systematic during pregnancy and mandatory before marriage. Several years after the implementation of these measures, this study aimed to identify the factors associated with knowledge of sickle cell disease and awareness of haemoglobin genotype among pregnant women. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This was a multicentre, cross-sectional, descriptive and analytical study conducted from May to December 2024 in three health centres in Greater Libreville

Clinical and molecular evidences of HTLV-1 infection in inpatients diagnosed with diseases previously described as associated to this infection: A case series in Gabon, Central Africa.

The Human T-cell Leukemia Virus Type 1 (HTLV-1) infection is endemic in Gabon, and despite the high prevalence, very few cases of HTLV-1 associated diseases are sporadically described. A cross-sectional study was conducted in the main teaching hospital of Gabon. Using serological and molecular techniques, plasma samples were tested and nucleic materials of all positive samples extracted from the buffy coat, then a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) was performed to detect fragments of 220 and 522-base-pairs of HTLV-1 Tax/Rex and Env genes, respectively. From March to September 2022, a total of 35

Demography, maternal health and the epidemiology of malaria and other major infectious diseases in the rural department Tsamba-Magotsi, Ngounie Province, in central African Gabon.

BACKGROUND: Sub-Saharan Africa is undergoing an epidemiological transition from a predominance of infectious diseases to non-communicable and lifestyle related conditions. However, the pace of this transition and the pattern of disease epidemiology are uneven between affluent urban and rural poor populations. To address this question for a remote rural region located in the central African rainforest region of Gabon, this study was conducted to assess reasons for health care attendance and to characterize the epidemiology of malaria and other major infectious diseases for the department of Tsa

High prevalence of HTLV-1 among blood donors in southeastern Gabon (Central Africa): a major challenge for transfusion safety in a semi-rural area.

UNLABELLED: Sub-Saharan Africa is an endemic region for human T-lymphotropic virus type 1 (HTLV-1). While high prevalence rates have been reported across Gabon, systematic screening of blood donors has not yet been implemented at the national level. A cross-sectional study was conducted on 2,375 blood donations from 2,303 blood donors at the Amissa Bongo Teaching Hospital Center in Franceville. Serological screening was performed via ELISA, followed by Western Blot confirmation and PCR-based proviral DNA amplification of the env gene. The overall HTLV-1 seroprevalence was 2.1% (95% CI: 1.6%-2.
