Identification and functional analysis of the CqGID1 homologs in quinoa.

Silencing of CqGID1s from quinoa resulted in severely dwarfed plants, whereas CqGID1 overexpression significantly increased GA sensitivity and plant height in Arabidopsis thaliana. Gibberellin (GA) is an important phytohormone that regulates seed germination and growth, and the GIBBERELLIN-INSENSITIVE DWARF1 (GIDI) is a key mediator of GA. In this study, we identified three quinoa GID1 genes: the expression level of CqGID1c was low during the germination of quinoa seeds, whereas those of CqGID1b1 and CqGID1b2 were high, suggesting that CqGID1b1 and CqGID1b2 may play important roles in the germ

Unravelling ecophysiological and molecular adjustments in the photosynthesis-respiration balance during Fusarium graminearum infection in wheat spikes.

Wheat responses to F. graminearum result in a deep and sharp reprogramming of a wide range of biological processes, including energy-associated functions and related metabolisms. Although these impacts have been thoroughly described at the molecular scale through proteomics and transcriptomics studies, phenotypic studies are still needed to fill the gap between the observed molecular events and the actual impacts of the disease on the ecophysiological processes. Taking advantage of the gas exchange method, the effects of two F. graminearum strains of contrasting aggressiveness on spike's photo

Genome-wide characterization of the sorghum JAZ gene family and their responses to phytohormone treatments and aphid infestation.

Jasmonate ZIM-domain (JAZ) proteins are the key repressors of the jasmonic acid (JA) signal transduction pathway and play a crucial role in stress-related defense, phytohormone crosstalk and modulation of the growth-defense tradeoff. In this study, the sorghum genome was analyzed through genome-wide comparison and domain scan analysis, which led to the identification of 18 sorghum JAZ (SbJAZ) genes. All SbJAZ proteins possess the conserved TIFY and Jas domains and they formed a phylogenetic tree with five clusters related to the orthologs of other plant species. Similarly, evolutionary analysi

Auxins, the hidden player in chloroplast development.

Throughout decades of plant research, the plant hormones known as auxins have been found to be of vital importance in most plant development processes. Indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) represents the most common auxin in plants and can be synthesized from its tryptophan precursor, which is synthesized in the chloroplast. The chloroplast constitutes an organelle of great relevance to plants since the photosynthesis process by which plants get most of their energy is carried out there. The role of auxins in photosynthesis has been studied for at least 50 years, and in this time, it has been shown that

Organ symmetry establishment during gynoecium development.

Symmetry is a key factor in the morphological diversity and reproductive success of angiosperms (flowering plants). The gynoecium, the female reproductive organ of the flower, displays remarkable variation in symmetry types, ranging from bilateral to radial, from its base (ovary) to its apex (style). Proper tissue growth and differentiation occur along the body axes to form three-dimensional structures and establish symmetric forms within the organ. In this review, we summarise the latest understanding on cellular, molecular and genetic mechanisms governing pivotal symmetry changes during gyno

Parallel Evolution of Common Allelic Variants Confers Flowering Diversity in Capsella rubella.

Flowering time is an adaptive life history trait. Capsella rubella, a close relative of Arabidopsis thaliana and a young species, displays extensive variation for flowering time but low standing genetic variation due to an extreme bottleneck event, providing an excellent opportunity to understand how phenotypic diversity can occur with a limited initial gene pool. Here, we demonstrate that common allelic variation and parallel evolution at the FLC locus confer variation in flowering time in C. rubella. We show that two overlapping deletions in the 5' untranslated region (UTR) of C. rubella FLC

Integrated Transcriptomic Profiling Reveals Distinct and Overlapping Transcriptional Responses and Regulatory Pathways Mediated by Salicylic Acid, Jasmonic Acid, and Abscisic Acid in Lotus (Nelumbo nucifera).

Sacred lotus (Nelumbo nucifera) is an important aquatic crop whose growth and productivity are severely constrained by environmental stresses. Salicylic Acid (SA), Jasmonic Acid (JA), and Abscisic Acid (ABA) are key plant growth regulators (PGRs) involved in stress responses, but their regulatory mechanisms in lotus remain unclear. In this study, transcriptome sequencing was performed in lotus seedlings treated with exogenous SA, JA, and ABA to characterize hormone-responsive regulatory networks. SA predominantly resulted in transcriptional repression, with responsive genes mainly associated w

Transcriptomic analysis reveals molecular phenological changes during the flower-to-fruit transition in Vanilla planifolia Andrews (Orchidaceae).

BACKGROUND: The transition from flower to fruit, encompassing flower formation to fruit maturation, has been extensively studied in model plants such as Arabidopsis thaliana. However, the Orchidaceae family, including Vanilla planifolia, exhibits a unique phenomenon known as post-pollination syndrome (PPS), where pollination initiates ovule development but often leads to premature ovary drop. This phenomenon significantly impacts the yield and stability of V. planifolia crops. Understanding the molecular mechanisms underlying PPS is essential for improving crop production. This study explores

Integrated analysis of transcriptome and metabolome reveals the mechanism of lignin biosynthesis in fruit abscission of Chinese bayberry (Myrica rubra).

Chinese bayberry is a distinctive fruit tree native to southern China. However, it suffers from severe fruit abscission at mature stage, while the molecular mechanism of which remain unclear. In this study, two varieties (BQ and DA) with significant difference in fruit abscission were performed as the materials, and the results indicated the lignin content of fruit stalk was considered as the major cause of fruit abscission in Chinese bayberry. BQ with low fruit abscission rates exhibited thicker and shorter fruit stalks, along with correspondingly higher lignin content in the fruit stalk, whe

Ultraviolet-induced melanisation in lichens: physiological traits and transcriptome profile.

Lichens are important components of high-latitude boreal and Arctic habitats. While stress tolerant, they are among the most sensitive ecosystem components to climate change, in particular, an increase in ultraviolet light (UV) arising from polar ozone depletion and deforestation. This study is the first to explore the effects of UV-B on gene expression in lichens to predict metabolic pathways involved in tolerance. Using transcriptome profiling and bioinformatic analyses, here we studied the effects of UV-B on gene expression in lichens using Lobaria pulmonaria (L.) Hoff. as a model species.

Genome-Wide Identification and Characterization of the UMAMIT Gene Family in Brassica napus: Evolution, Expression, and Potential Association with Oil Content.

The UMAMIT (Usually Multiple Acids Move In and Out Transporters) family comprises plant-specific amino acid transporters that play key roles in nitrogen uptake, transport, and storage. As a major oil crop in the Brassicaceae family, efficient amino acid transport in Brassica napus seeds is closely linked to seed yield and quality. Despite extensive studies in other species, the UMAMIT gene family has not been systematically characterized in B. napus. In this study, we identified 172 BnaUMAMIT genes, all of which harbor the EamA/WAT1-related domain and are predicted to localize to the plasma me

A laser capture microdissection-based transcriptome analysis on salt glands highlights salt secretion mechanism in mangrove plant Avicennia marina.

Salt glands, developed in the epidermis of salt-secreting mangrove plant Avicennia marina leaves and specialized in salt secretion, are critical for improving the survival under high saline habitats. However, the salt secretion mechanism in A. marina remains poorly understood. In this study, laser capture microdissection was employed to isolate salt glands from the upper epidermis of A. marina, followed by transcriptome sequencing (RNA-Seq) to comparatively analyze gene expression profiles of salt glands under 0 mM NaCl and 400 mM NaCl treatments. Additionally, non-invasive micro-test technolo

Genome-Wide Identification and Expression Profiling of the DOG1-like Genes in Radish (Raphanus sativus L.).

Seed dormancy is a vital adaptive mechanism regulated by the DELAY OF GERMINATION (DOG) gene family. Here, we present the first systematic genome-wide identification and expression profiling of the DOG gene family (RsDOGs) in radish (Raphanus sativus). Comprehensive analysis of physicochemical properties, chromosomal distribution, and phylogeny revealed strong evolutionary conservation alongside functional divergence. Notably, several RsDOG proteins harbor natural fusions of the DOG1 domain with a bZIP domain, suggesting potential transcription factor activity and novel regulatory functions. P

Receptor-like cytoplasmic kinase 58 reduces tolerance of maize seedlings to low magnesium via promoting H2O2 over-accumulation.

ZmRLCK58, a negative growth regulator, reduces tolerance of maize seedlings to low Mg via enhancing H2O2 accumulation in the shoot. Magnesium (Mg) deficiency is one of critical limiting factors for crop production in widespread acidic soils worldwide. However, the molecular mechanism of crop response to Mg deficiency is still largely unclear. Here, we found higher concentrations of H2O2, soluble sugars, and starch (1.5-, 1.9-, and 1.4-fold, respectively) in the shoot of low-Mg-treated maize seedlings, compared with Mg sufficient plants under hydroponic culture. Consistent with over-accumulatio

Comparative physiological, hormonal, and transcriptional analyses reveal the difference between diploid and autotetraploid rice under cadmium stress.

Elevated cadmium (Cd) stress tolerance in autotetraploid rice at the seedling stage is correlated with coordinated remodeling of ROS homeostasis, hormone signaling and transcriptional programs. Polyploid plants commonly exhibit robust tolerance to various abiotic stresses, while the underlying regulatory mechanisms remain largely elusive. To elucidate the intrinsic mechanisms underlying enhanced Cd stress tolerance in autotetraploid rice, two pairs of diploid (2X) rice and their corresponding autotetraploid (4X) lines were used as experimental materials for Cd stress treatment and systematic p

Genome-Wide Identification and Comparative Analysis of the TCP Transcription Factor Family in Three Glycyrrhiza Species Reveals GuTCP16 as a Positive Regulator of Salt Tolerance.

The TCP transcription factor family is a plant-specific group of regulators with well-documented roles in mediating abiotic stress responses. Licorice (Glycyrrhiza) is a high-value medicinal crop of global economic significance, predominantly cultivated in arid and semi-arid environments where saline soils constrain seed germination, impair seedling development, and diminish both rhizome biomass and the accumulation of pharmacologically active metabolites. Despite the agronomic importance of this genus, a systematic genome-wide survey of the TCP family and its contribution to salt tolerance in

Genome-wide identification and expression analysis of heat shock factors in Plantago fengdouensis under abiotic stresses.

Plantago fengdouensis is a rare plant with extremely limited distribution, it once thrived on the central islands of the Yangtze River, where it was alternately exposed to flooding and high temperatures annually. Researches on various plants have confirmed that heat shock factors (HSFs) are the important regulatory factors mediating plants' responses to abiotic stresses and also participating in regulating plant growth and development. However, there is a research gap regarding the HSF family in P. fengdouensis. Therefore, a total of 30 PfHSFs were identified in the genome of P. fengdouensis a

Genome-wide characterization and cold-responsive expression profile of Rab GTPases and their regulatory proteins in O. rufipogen.

The DXWR genome was found to contain 44 OrRabs. Most of the cold-activated OrRab genes belong to the RabA/Rab11 group, with OrRab11B3 the most strongly induced gene in DXWR. Dongxiang wild rice (Oryza rufipogon Griff., DXWR), the wild rice species distributed at the highest latitude, exhibits significantly greater cold tolerance than cultivated rice, making it a valuable genetic resource for enhancing cold resistance in domesticated varieties. While previous studies in Arabidopsis thaliana have shown that members of the Rab gene family-encoding small GTP-binding proteins-are regulated by cold
