Head lice diagnosed in general practice in the West Midlands between 1993 and 2000: a survey using the General Practice Research Database.

The potential of the General Practice Research Database (GPRD) for communicable disease surveillance was explored using head lice as an example. All diagnoses of head lice and prescriptions for parasiticidal agents from 1993 to 2000 in the West Midlands were analysed. Diagnoses reached a peak of 28.2 per 1,000 patient years at risk and total prescriptions reached a peak of 27.1 per 1,000 patient years at risk in 1997. Malathion and permethrin were prescribed most often. The proportion of further parasiticidal prescriptions issued within 30 days of the initial prescription increased to a peak o

[The practice guideline 'Otitis externa' (first revision) from the Dutch College of General Practitioners; a response from the perspective of general practice].

The first revision of the practice guideline 'Otitis externa' from the Dutch College of General Practitioners has been published. Data from a clinical trial in primary care clearly show that acid eardrops containing corticosteroids are superior to acid eardrops without corticosteroids. Other minor changes have been made. A KOH test is no longer necessary in general practice. Aluminium acetotartrate eardrops 1.2% are reserved for otitis externa with tympanic membrane perforation.

[The practice guideline 'Hormonal contraception' (second revision) from the Dutch College of General Practitioners; a response from the perspective of general practice].

The second revision of the Dutch College of General Practitioners' practice guideline on hormonal contraception discusses the various methods of hormonal birth control and can help the general practitioner to inform the patient when choosing the most desirable method. A thorough anamnesis is necessary with regard to the increased risks for breast cancer, uterine cancer and cardiovascular diseases in women using hormonal contraception, especially in those who smoke. The guideline also discusses non-hormonal methods briefly.

Towards Best-Practice Healthcare for Transgender Patients: Quality Improvement in United Kingdom General Practice.

Introduction: The ongoing care of transgender patients in United Kingdom (UK) general practice (GP) is hampered by a lack of UK primary care guidelines regarding the monitoring of treatments, despite the key role that general practice has in holistic lifelong care. This quality improvement project aimed to audit the monitoring of treatments and health screening in a GP practice population, across two large practices in southwest England, in order to drive local improvement and to identify gaps in wider healthcare support for this population. Methods: This project updated a previously published

Psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy: The Australian and general practice perspective.

BACKGROUND: Since Australia's Therapeutic Goods Administration down-scheduled two psychedelic medicines from July 2023, psychotherapeutic treatment using these medicines has become available in the private sector, making it possible for general practitioners (GPs) to refer their patients with treatment-resistant depression or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Several other psychedelic medicines are also legally in use as off-label or unapproved medicines. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this article is to help GPs make sense of this new type of treatment by discussing the Australian context, with

Maintenance of peri-implant health in general dental practice.

The long-term maintenance or restoration of peri-implant tissues' health depends on the strategic implementation of preventive measures and interventions. These measures should be initiated before implant placement and continued throughout a patient's lifetime, as part of a tailored and comprehensive supportive peri-implant care (SPIC) programme. Central to the clinical efforts of maintaining and rehabilitating peri-implant tissues are several key factors, including the ongoing assessment and frequent monitoring of tissue health and stability, proactive oral health promotion, the control of ri

Beyond psychedelics: set and setting in general psychiatric practice.

Psychedelic compounds continue gaining scientific and regulatory traction as potential new treatments for psychiatric disorders. While most psychiatrists will likely not work directly with these compounds, psychedelic research practices provide insights that may improve conventional psychiatric care. Through its emphasis on 'set and setting' (mindset and environment, respectively), psychedelic research highlights the importance of non-pharmacologic factors maximizing therapeutic outcomes. While psychedelics and serotonergic antidepressants are distinctly different in their subjective experienc

Panic disorder in general medical practice- A narrative review.

The under-or misdiagnosis, and symptomatic treatment of the panic disorder (PD), despite high prevalent medical illness, is common among non-psychiatric physicians. The non-psychiatrist physician's role is vital in the care of PD as most patients initially approach general medical settings for medical help, including primary care. However, a significant proportion is undiagnosed and undergoes either unnecessary investigation, misdiagnosed, or mismanaged even among post-Coronary Artery Bypass Grafting patients, which profoundly affects the patients functioning and quality of life. Defining quality indicators for heart failure in general practice.

Background: Quality indicators (QIs) are used to measure and evaluate quality of care. However, QIs to evaluate care for HF patients in general practice in Belgium are lacking. Therefore, this study aimed to determine which QIs, rooted in the electronic health record (EHR), are useful to monitor quality of care for patients with HF in general practice. Methods: The RAND/UCLA appropriateness method (a modified Delphi method) was used to define these assigned QIs. First, a literature review was performed to generate a list of possible QIs for HF. Second, by applying the SMART principle, 25 QIs w

Management of Whiplash Associated Disorders in Australian general practice.

BACKGROUND: Whiplash Associated Disorders (WAD) are common and costly, and are usually managed initially by general practitioners (GPs). How GPs manage WAD is largely unstudied, though there are clinical guidelines. Our aim was to ascertain the rate of management (percentage of encounters) of WAD among patients attending Australian general practice, and to review management of these problems, including imaging, medications and other treatments. METHODS: We analysed data from 2013 to 2016 collected by different random samples of approximately 1000 general practitioners (GPs) per year. Each GP

[Chondroprotectors: A range of application in general somatic practice].

Chondroprotectors (CP) are biological agents that contribute to the regeneration of the cartilage surfaces and articular capsule, participating in the metabolic processes of the articular cartilage. Progressive loss of hyaline cartilage and lower levels of chondroitin sulfate were observed in osteoarthritis (OA) at different sites, including dorsopathy. OA therapy is aimed at slowing disease progression, relieving pain symptoms, and reducing functional disorders. For this purpose, oral or injectable CPs (Chondroguard, Sustaguard) are prescribed. The optimal dosing regimen of parenteral CPs is

Attitudes and immunisation practices of Australian general practice nurses.

BACKGROUND: Despite the decline in vaccine-preventable diseases, immunisation rates remain important. Nurses working in general practice (GPN) are often the first contact for childhood and adult immunisations and so impact vaccine provision. AIM: This study sought to describe the current immunisation practices and attitudes of GPN prior to attending the Nurse Immuniser Training Program. METHODS: Prior to undertaking a Nurse Immuniser Training Program, registered nurses completed a survey describing their demographics, immunisation practice and attitudes to immunisation. RESULTS: Ninety-five

Seasonal influenza immunization program outside general practice: An evaluation.

With the support of our local Public Health and NHS England teams, we developed a pathway of care to provide seasonal influenza vaccination to our heroin dependent service users. 340 of the 515 service users receiving opioid substitution treatment (OST) were offered the vaccination in the 2014/15 influenza season and 205 accepted it. A further 29 service users received the vaccination elsewhere. With over 50% of those on OST prescriptions known to have a diagnosed chronic condition, such as liver or respiratory disease, this was a worthwhile health intervention in a population that is known to
