Effects of drugs on stimulus control of behavior. III. Analysis of effects of pentobarbital and d-amphetamine.

Key-peck responses of pigeons on one of two keys were reinforced intermittently under a multiple fixed-interval schedule. In one component of the schedule, a houselight provided general illumination of the experimental chamber, and responses on a red key produced food according to a 5-min fixed-interval schedule. In the alternate component, the houselight was off and responses on an amber key produced food according to the 5-min fixed-interval schedule. Each response randomly (P = .5) alternated the positions of the key colors (right or left) and the two components (houselight on or off) alter

A Deep Learning Model for Automatic Thresholding of Auditory Brainstem Responses: Multicenter and Multispecies Validation.

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to develop a deep learning model that directly estimates auditory brainstem response (ABR) thresholds from stacked waveform series across multiple stimulus intensities, and to validate its performance on multicenter, large-scale, diverse human and mouse datasets. METHODS: Independent of traditional binary waveform-by-waveform detection, we propose a transformer-based model that integrates adjacent-level cross-attention, a series encoder, and a supervised contrastive learning branch to capture both intra-waveform temporal structures and inter-series dependencies, al

The impact of threat- and safety-enhancing information on the acquisition of fear of interoceptive threat.

Social learning, such as learning through verbal instruction, has been proposed to play a crucial role in the development pathological fear of bodily sensations. Despite the ubiquity of verbal information in daily life, the effects of verbal information on subsequent interoceptive fear learning remain empirically untested. Therefore, we aimed to examine how verbal information about the threatening vs. benign nature of bodily sensations influences subsequent interoceptive fear conditioning. 77 healthy participants were randomly assigned to receive either threat- or safety-enhancing information

The impacts of training on change deafness and build-up in a flicker task.

Performance on auditory change detection tasks can be improved by training. We examined the stimulus specificity of these training effects in behavior and ERPs. A flicker change detection task was employed in which spatialized auditory scenes were alternated until a "change" or "same" response was made. For half of the trials, scenes were identical. The other half contained changes in the spatial locations of objects from scene to scene. On Day 1, participants were either trained on this auditory change detection task (trained group), or trained on a non-auditory change detection task (control

Long-lasting increase of corticosterone after fear memory reactivation: anxiolytic effects and network activity modulation in the ventral hippocampus.

Pathological fear and anxiety can be studied, in rodents, with fear conditioning and exposure to reminder cues. These paradigms are thought to critically involve the ventral hippocampus, which also serves as key site of glucocorticoid action in the brain. Here, we demonstrate a long-lasting reduction of kainate-induced gamma oscillations in slice preparations of the ventral hippocampal area CA3, 30 days after a single fear conditioning training. Reduction of gamma power was sensitive to corticosterone application and associated with a decrease in glucocorticoid and mineralocorticoid receptor m

Discriminative stimulus, self-reported and cardiovascular effects of orally administered cocaine in humans.

This study evaluated whether an oral dose of cocaine can serve as a discriminative stimulus in humans. Four male and one female cocaine-abusing volunteers (ages 26-41 years) were trained to discriminate between cocaine HCl (80 mg/70 kg p.o.) and placebo. Once the criterion for discrimination was met (i.e., > or = 80% correct responding for four consecutive sessions), dose-effect curves were determined for orally administered cocaine (20, 40, 80 and 120 mg/70 kg), intranasally administered cocaine (20, 40, 80 and 120 mg/70 kg) and the benzodiazepine triazolam (0.25 and 0.50 mg/70 kg p.o.). Category-sensitive excitatory and inhibitory processes in human extrastriate cortex.

Single-cell recordings from the temporal lobe of monkeys viewing stimuli show that cells may be highly selective, responding for example to particular objects such as faces. However, stimulus-selective cells may be inhibited by nonpreferred stimuli. Can such inhibitory mechanisms be detected in human visual cortex? In previous recordings from the surface of human ventral extrastriate cortex, we found that specific categories of stimuli such as faces and words generate category-specific negative event-related potentials (ERPs) with a peak latency of about 200 ms (N200). Laminar recordings in an

Neural Transformation from Retinotopic to Background-Centric Coordinates in the Macaque Precuneus.

Visual information is initially represented in retinotopic coordinates and later in craniotopic coordinates. Psychophysical evidence suggests that visual information is further represented in more general coordinates related to the external world; however, the neural basis of nonegocentric coordinates remains elusive. This study investigates the automatic transformation from egocentric to nonegocentric coordinates in the macaque precuneus (two males, one female), identified by a functional imaging study as a key area for nonegocentric representation. We found that 6.2% of neurons in the precun

Mechanisms of Aerodigestive Symptoms in Infants with Varying Acid Reflux Index Determined by Esophageal Manometry.

OBJECTIVE: To test whether symptom generation in infants is related to the severity of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) symptoms as determined by the Acid Reflux Index (ARI), stimulus media, and stimulus volume during provocative esophageal manometry. STUDY DESIGN: Symptomatic neonates (n = 74) born at a median of 28.9 weeks gestation (range, 23.4-39.4 weeks) were studied at a median of 41.0 weeks (range, 34.6-48.0 weeks) postmenstrual age using 24-hour pH-impedance methods to determine ARI severity, followed by provocative esophageal manometry with graded mid-esophageal infusions (0.1-

Effects of the Synthetic Cathinone α-Pyrrolidinobutiothiophenone (α-PBT) on Discriminative Stimulus Effects and Intracranial Self-Stimulation Thresholds in Male Rats.

Recently, the abuse of synthetic cathinones is increasing among young people. α-Pyrrolidinobutiothiophenone (α-PBT), a synthetic cathinone, is a designer drug that is freely traded online with no legal restrictions. Moreover, there is currently no scientific basis for legal regulation. Here, we examined the addictive properties of α-PBT using a drug discrimination (DD) task. We also investigated the role of α-PBT in brain stimulation reward (BSR) using an intracranial self-stimulation (ICSS) paradigm in rats. Initially, the rats were trained to discriminate between cocaine and saline. After th

Behavioral characterization of dynamic facial expression perception in rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) using naturalistic and synthetic stimuli.

Facial displays are an important channel of communication for primates, yet it remains unclear based on which criteria monkeys evaluate facial expressions. We trained two rhesus macaques to categorize videos of four facial expression types (neutral, lip-smacking, silent bared-teeth (SBT) and open-mouth threat displays) and then tested generalization to novel individuals and avatars while measuring pupillary responses. The animals were able to categorize facial expressions and generalized their classifications to novel, untrained videos, although performance was not perfect. Misclassifications

Semantic Content of Visual Consequent Stimuli Modulates Audiovisual Learning in Migraine.

INTRODUCTION: Acquired equivalence learning relies on associating different antecedent stimuli with shared outcomes and is mediated by the basal ganglia and hippocampus. Audiovisual associative learning benefits from multisensory integration, which may be disrupted in migraine. Previous studies indicated altered performance in such learning paradigms. This study investigated whether the semantic content of consequent visual stimuli influence audiovisual associative equivalence learning in adult migraine patients. METHODS: 30 adult migraine patients completed two audiovisual learning tests: th

Assessment of the abuse potential of methamnetamine in rodents: a behavioral pharmacology study.

RATIONALE: Methamnetamine (MNA; PAL-1046) is a new psychoactive substance that acts as a full biogenic amine transporter (BAT) substrate. BAT substrates promote neurotransmitter release from the nerve terminal and can be abused as stimulants. However, scientific information on the abuse potential of methamnetamine is lacking. OBJECTIVE: We evaluated the abuse liability of methamnetamine. METHODS: The effective dose range of methamnetamine was determined using a climbing behavior test. The rewarding effect and reinforcing effect of the test compound were evaluated in mice by conditioned place

Discriminative stimulus properties of buspirone in the pigeon.

The novel anxiolytic buspirone was administered to pigeons in a two-key drug discrimination task in an effort to characterize the stimulus properties of the drug and thereby aid in isolating the pharmacologic basis for its anticonflict effect. Key pecking was maintained by a schedule of reinforcement in which every 30th injection-appropriate response was reinforced by the presentation of food. Subjects were first trained to discriminate buspirone (1.0 mg/kg) from saline, and then generalization tests were conducted using a cumulative dosing procedure. Cumulative doses of buspirone (1.0-3.0 mg/

In vivo functional imaging of the human middle ear with a hand-held optical coherence tomography device.

We describe an optical coherence tomography and vibrometry system designed for portable hand-held usage in the otology clinic on awake patients. The system provides clinically relevant point-of-care morphological imaging with 14-44 µm resolution and functional vibratory measures with sub-nanometer sensitivity. We evaluated various new approaches for extracting functional information including a multi-tone stimulus, a continuous chirp stimulus, and alternating air and bone stimulus. We also explored the vibratory response over an area of the tympanic membrane (TM) and generated TM thickness map

Filter-based models of suppression in retinal ganglion cells: Comparison and generalization across species and stimuli.

The dichotomy of excitation and suppression is one of the canonical mechanisms explaining the complexity of neural activity. Computational models of the interplay of excitation and suppression in single neurons aim at investigating how this interaction affects a neuron's spiking responses and shapes the encoding of sensory stimuli. Here, we compare the performance of three filter-based stimulus-encoding models for predicting retinal ganglion cell responses recorded from axolotl, mouse, and marmoset retina to different types of temporally varying visual stimuli. Suppression in these models is i

Dyslexia and the failure to form a perceptual anchor.

In a large subgroup of dyslexic individuals (D-LDs), reading difficulties are part of a broader learning and language disability. Recent studies indicate that D-LDs perform poorly in many psychoacoustic tasks compared with individuals with normal reading ability. We found that D-LDs perform as well as normal readers in speech perception in noise and in a difficult tone comparison task. However, their performance did not improve when these same tasks were performed with a smaller stimulus set. In contrast to normal readers, they did not benefit from stimulus-specific repetitions, suggesting tha

Similarities in the detection of stimulus symmetry by individuals with and without mental retardation.

Intelligence-related differences in the detection of stimulus organization previously identified by Soraci, Carlin, Deckner, and Baumeister (1990) were examined further to determine whether they would (a) extend to similar checkerboard stimuli varying solely with respect to symmetry and (b) generalize to form-like polygon stimuli. Detection performances of 10 individuals with mild mental retardation, 10 CA-matched, and 10 MA-matched individuals were assessed on a rapid presentation a two-choice match-to-sample task. The organizations of the target and distractor stimuli were varied across four
