Use of Cryopreserved Sperm of Grass Carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella) for Seed Production at the Hatchery Level of Bangladesh-A Need for Development of Germplasm Repositories.

Grass carp (Ctenopharyngodon idella), a freshwater nonnative fish species, is a potential aquaculture candidate in Bangladesh. The seed of the species is produced in the hatcheries by hypophysation, but the quality of seedstock of grass carp is deteriorated due to inbreeding, negative selection, and interspecific introgression among fishes. To increase the availability of quality seed and best genetic traits of grass carp, this study dealt with finding suitable conditions of sperm cryopreservation protocols and evaluated the effectiveness of cryopreserved sperm through breeding trials of C. id

Neanderthal and Denisova tooth protein variants in present-day humans.

Environment parameters, diet and genetic factors interact to shape tooth morphostructure. In the human lineage, archaic and modern hominins show differences in dental traits, including enamel thickness, but variability also exists among living populations. Several polymorphisms, in particular in the non-collagenous extracellular matrix proteins of the tooth hard tissues, like enamelin, are involved in dental structure variation and defects and may be associated with dental disorders or susceptibility to caries. To gain insights into the relationships between tooth protein polymorphisms and den

Effect of introducing the naked neck gene in a line selected for low residual feed consumption on performance in temperate or subtropical environments.

The aim of this study was to investigate the possibility of combining the naked neck gene with a genetic background that has been optimized for feed efficiency of laying hens at moderate temperature. In 1997, the naked neck gene was introduced into a line selected for low residual feed intake. In 2003, after 6 generations of introgression, 8 males and 56 females heterozygous for the NA*NA mutation were used to generate all 3 genotypes (NA*N/NA*N, NA*NA/NA*N, NA*NA/NA*NA), in 2 hatches, for rearing in Taiwan and France, respectively, at 3-wk intervals. Growth performance, anatomical traits, lay

BrANL2 negatively regulates the anthocyanin biosynthesis by depressing BrPAL, BrC4H, and Br4CL in purple flowering Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa var. parachinensis).

A new deep‑purple flowering Chinese cabbage germplasm (22M‑699) was developed, and BrANL2 was identified as a negative regulator of anthocyanin biosynthesis that directly represses BrPAL, BrC4H, and Br4CL, providing a target for purple-color breeding in Brassica crops. Purple flowering Chinese cabbage is highly valued in the market for its vibrant color and potential health benefits, especially the rich anthocyanin contents. Previously, we introduced the purple trait from mustard (Brassica juncea) into heading Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa var. pekinensis) via distant hybridization, which res

Innate immunogenetic synergy between KIR and Neanderthal-derived OAS variants predicts COVID-19 outcomes.

BACKGROUND: Genetic factors modulate the progression of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), but interactions between innate immune gene variants remain incompletely understood. Prior work identified Killer Immunoglobulin-like Receptor (KIR) genotypes and Neanderthal-introgressed OAS1/2/3 haplotypes as key modulators of disease severity. Given these parallel findings, we aimed to evaluate the synergistic impact of KIR motifs, Neanderthal-inherited OAS1/2/3 variants, and other immune-related SNPs on COVID-19 symptomatology and severity. METHODS: In a cohort of 175 unvaccinated severe acute res

Development of Murine Systemic Lupus Erythematosus in the Absence of BAFF.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) can develop in the absence of BAFF in an SLE-prone host. METHODS: Starting with C57BL/6 mice that express a human BCL2 transgene (Tg) in their B cells (thereby rendering B cell survival largely independent of BAFF-triggered signals), we introgressed this Tg into NZM 2328 mice genetically deficient in BAFF (NZM.Baff-/- ) to generate NZM.Baff-/- .Bcl2Tg mice. Expression of human Bcl-2 and lymphocyte profiles were assessed by fluorescence-activated cell sorting, and serologic profiles were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorben

Genetic, physiological and comparative genomic studies of hypertension and insulin resistance in the spontaneously hypertensive rat.

We previously mapped hypertension-related insulin resistance quantitative trait loci (QTLs) to rat chromosomes 4, 12 and 16 using adipocytes from F2 crosses between spontaneously hypertensive (SHR) and Wistar Kyoto (WKY) rats, and subsequently identified Cd36 as the gene underlying the chromosome 4 locus. The identity of the chromosome 12 and 16 genes remains unknown. To identify whole-body phenotypes associated with the chromosome 12 and 16 linkage regions, we generated and characterised new congenic strains, with WKY donor segments introgressed onto an SHR genetic background, for the chromos

Cryptic diversity, geographical endemism and allopolyploidy in NE Pacific seaweeds.

BACKGROUND: Molecular markers are revealing a much more diverse and evolutionarily complex picture of marine biodiversity than previously anticipated. Cryptic and/or endemic marine species are continually being found throughout the world oceans, predominantly in inconspicuous tropical groups but also in larger, canopy-forming taxa from well studied temperate regions. Interspecific hybridization has also been found to be prevalent in many marine groups, for instance within dense congeneric assemblages, with introgressive gene-flow being the most common outcome. Here, using a congeneric phylogeo

Pre-breeding to establish Fhb7 in winter wheat using marker-assisted, modified backcrossing.

Fusarium head blight (FHB) is a destructive disease of wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) that causes major grain yield and quality losses. Improving host resistance remains an important strategy for managing FHB; however, resistance is quantitatively inherited and is often strengthened by combining multiple complementary resistance loci. The recently released wheat-Thinopyrum elongatum translocation line WGC002 carries Fhb7 in a Chinese Spring-derived spring wheat background, but this resistance source has not been established in the hard winter wheat (HWW) germplasm. The objective of this study wa

Natural Intra- and Interclade Human Hybrid Schistosomes in Africa with Considerations on Prevention through Vaccination.

Causal agents of schistosomiasis are dioecious, digenean schistosomes affecting mankind in 76 countries. Preventive measures are manifold but need to be complemented by vaccination for long-term protection; vaccine candidates in advanced pre-clinical/clinical stages include Sm14, Sm-TSP-2/Sm-TSP-2Al®, Smp80/SchistoShield®, and Sh28GST/Bilhvax®. Natural and anthropogenic changes impact on breaking species isolation barriers favoring introgressive hybridization, i.e., allelic exchange among gene pools of sympatric, interbreeding species leading to instant large genetic diversity. Invited review: Improving feed efficiency of beef cattle - the current state of the art and future challenges.

Improvements in feed efficiency of beef cattle have the potential to increase producer profitability and simultaneously lower the environmental footprint of beef production. Although there are many different approaches to measuring feed efficiency, residual feed intake (RFI) has increasingly become the measure of choice. Defined as the difference between an animal's actual and predicted feed intake (based on weight and growth), RFI is conceptually independent of growth and body size. In addition, other measurable traits related to energy expenditure such as estimates of body composition can be

Sex determination in the GIFT strain of tilapia is controlled by a locus in linkage group 23.

BACKGROUND: Tilapias (Family Cichlidae) are the second most important group of aquaculture species in the world. They have been the subject of much research on sex determination due to problems caused by early maturation in culture and their complex sex-determining systems. Different sex-determining loci (linkage group 1, 20 and 23) have been detected in various tilapia stocks. The 'genetically improved farmed tilapia' (GIFT) stock, founded from multiple Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) populations, with some likely to have been introgressed with O. mossambicus, is a key resource for tilap

Mechanisms of peripheral phylogeographic divergence in the indo-Pacific: lessons from the spiny lobster Panulirus homarus.

BACKGROUND: There is increasing recognition of the concordance between marine biogeographic and phylogeographic boundaries. However, it is still unclear how population-level divergence translates into species-level divergence, and what are the principal factors that first initiate that divergence, and then maintain reproductive isolation. This study examines the likely forces driving population and lineage divergences in the broadly-distributed Indo-Pacific spiny lobster Panulirus homarus, which has peripheral divergent lineages in the west and east. The study focuses particularly on the West

Transcriptomic analysis of dead end knockout testis reveals germ cell and gonadal somatic factors in Atlantic salmon.

BACKGROUND: Sustainability challenges are currently hampering an increase in salmon production. Using sterile salmon can solve problems with precocious puberty and genetic introgression from farmed escapees to wild populations. Recently sterile salmon was produced by knocking out the germ cell-specific dead end (dnd). Several approaches may be applied to inhibit Dnd function, including gene knockout, knockdown or immunization. Since it is challenging to develop a successful treatment against a gene product already existing in the body, alternative targets are being explored. Germ cells are sur

Beyond domestication: The unexpected contribution of native Musa wild relatives to cultivated banana diversity in Mainland Southeast Asia.

The diversity of cultivated bananas remains partially unknown, whereas cultivars with suitable adaptive traits could address the drastically increasing biotic and abiotic constraints on banana production. This partial knowledge also impacts our understanding of domestication processes, although replicating these processes is an endorsed strategy for banana varietal improvement. To address this gap, 91 specimens were collected during a collecting mission across northern Vietnam, northern Laos, and China's Yunnan region, an underexplored area at the northern limit of the Musa natural range. Does extreme asymmetric dominance promote hybridization between Anopheles coluzzii and Anopheles gambiae s.s. in seasonal malaria mosquito communities of West Africa?

BACKGROUND: Anopheles gambiae s.s. and An. coluzzii are two of the most important malaria vector species in sub-Saharan Africa. These recently-diverged sibling species do not exhibit intrinsic post-zygotic barriers to reproduction and are thought to be separated by strong assortative mating combined with selection against hybrids. At present, little is known about the ecological conditions that determine hybridization and introgression between these cryptic taxa. METHODS: Swarm segregation and assortative mating were studied in Western Burkina Faso in the villages of Vallée du Kou (VK7) and S

Chapter 2. Fasciola, lymnaeids and human fascioliasis, with a global overview on disease transmission, epidemiology, evolutionary genetics, molecular epidemiology and control.

Fascioliasis, caused by liver fluke species of the genus Fasciola, has always been well recognized because of its high veterinary impact but it has been among the most neglected diseases for decades with regard to human infection. However, the increasing importance of human fascioliasis worldwide has re-launched interest in fascioliasis. From the 1990s, many new concepts have been developed regarding human fascioliasis and these have furnished a new baseline for the human disease that is very different to a simple extrapolation from fascioliasis in livestock. Studies have shown that human fasc

The research contribution of the Schistosomiasis Collection at the Natural History Museum (SCAN): highlights, challenges and future directions.

BACKGROUND: The Schistosomiasis Collection at the Natural History Museum (SCAN) is a repository of schistosomiasis-related specimens, the development of which was funded by the Wellcome Trust between 2011 and 2021. With a view to facilitating research by improving access to genetically diverse material, SCAN was built from legacy research collections of schistosomiasis-related specimens amassed over decades, with more recent collections made through partnership with large field-based projects. METHODS: We identified the literature associated with SCAN from 2012 until 2024, using both database

Identification and quality characterization of a putative novel 17x + 8y high-molecular-weight glutenin subunit recombination in bread wheat.

BACKGROUND: High-molecular-weight glutenin subunits (HMW-GSs) are major determinants of dough rheological behavior and bread-making quality in bread wheat (Triticum aestivum L.). Among wheat genomes, the Glu-B1 locus exhibits the highest allelic diversity; however, recombination events between x- and y-type HMW-GS genes are considered extremely rare. The identification of novel recombinant HMW-GS profiles may therefore provide valuable new sources of functional diversity for wheat quality improvement. RESULTS: In the present study, a backcross breeding strategy combined with speed breeding wa
