Quadriceps and hamstrings prelanding myoelectric activity during landing from different heights among male and female athletes.

ACL tear is a major concern among athletes, coaches and sports scientists. More than taking the athlete away from training and competition, ACL tear is a risk factor for early-onset of knee osteoarthritis, and, therefore addressing strategies to avoid such injury is pertinent not only for competitive athletes, but for all physically active subjects. Imbalances in the prelanding myoelectric activity of the hamstrings and quadriceps muscles have been linked to ACL injuries. We investigated the effect of landing from different heights on prelanding myoelectric activity of the hamstrings and quadr

Effects of novel tubing gait on neuromuscular imbalance in cerebral palsy.

BACKGROUND: Gait impairments from a neuromuscular imbalance are crucial issues in cerebral palsy. The purpose of our study was to compare the effects of the assistive tubing gait (ATG) and assistive-resistive tubing gait (ARTG) on improving the vasti and hamstring muscle imbalance during the initial contact to mid-stance phases in individuals with spastic diplegic cerebral palsy (CP). METHODS: Fourteen age-matched individuals including seven normal individuals (11.7 years) and seven individuals with CP (12.9 years) were recruited. All participants underwent electromyography (EMG) measurement

Clinical and magnetic resonance imaging outcome after proximal hamstring tendon repair at mean 3 years follow-up.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to assess clinical and radiological outcome in patients after proximal hamstring tendon repair. We hypothesized that there is a significant correlation among subjective clinical outcome and interlimb asymmetries in muscle strength, fatty infiltration, and hamstring volume. METHODS: This retrospective monocentric case series included patients with surgical repair after proximal hamstring tendon rupture. Clinical outcome was assessed utilizing: Healthy Days Core Module (CDC HRQOL-4), numeric pain rating scale (NRS), modified Harris Hip Score (mHHS), Tegner

Hamstring musculotendon dynamics during stance and swing phases of high-speed running.

INTRODUCTION: Hamstring strain injuries are common in sports that involve high-speed running. It remains uncertain whether the hamstrings are susceptible to injury during late swing phase, when the hamstrings are active and lengthening, or during stance, when contact loads are present. In this study, we used forward dynamic simulations to compare hamstring musculotendon stretch, loading, and work done during stance and swing phases of high-speed running. METHODS: Whole-body kinematics, EMG activities, and ground reactions were collected as 12 subjects ran on an instrumented treadmill at speed

An Evidence-Based Framework for Strengthening Exercises to Prevent Hamstring Injury.

Strength training is a valuable component of hamstring strain injury prevention programmes; however, in recent years a significant body of work has emerged to suggest that the acute responses and chronic adaptations to training with different exercises are heterogeneous. Unfortunately, these research findings do not appear to have uniformly influenced clinical guidelines for exercise selection in hamstring injury prevention or rehabilitation programmes. The purpose of this review was to provide the practitioner with an evidence-base from which to prescribe strengthening exercises to mitigate t

The diagnostic and prognostic value of ultrasonography in soccer players with acute hamstring injuries.

BACKGROUND: An injury to the hamstring muscle complex is the most common injury in soccer. Ultrasound of acute hamstring injuries is often used as a clinical tool for diagnosing hamstring injuries and guiding players in when they can return to play. PURPOSE: To (1) investigate the characteristic sonographic findings of acute hamstring injuries in soccer players, (2) compare the mean injury severity (time to return to play) in injured players with and without sonographically verified abnormalities, and (3) correlate the length of the injured area and absence from soccer play (time to return to

Assessment of physical examination and magnetic resonance imaging findings of hamstring injury as predictors for recurrent injury.

STUDY DESIGN: Prospective cohort study. OBJECTIVE: To examine clinical and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) features of hamstring muscle injury to determine if any are predictive for recurrent injury. BACKGROUND: Hamstring muscle strain injury and subsequent recurrent injury are common. Little information exists on factors that may increase the risk for recurrent injury. METHODS AND MEASURES: The subjects were athletes from 3 professional Australian Rules football teams (n = 162). Anthropometric measurements, clinical signs, convalescent interval, and MRI assessment and measurement were und

A lower leg surrogate study to investigate the effect of quadriceps-hamstrings activation ratio on ACL tensile force.

OBJECTIVES: Many studies have investigated the relationship between muscle activation and tensile force of the anterior cruciate ligament. These studies lacked a holistic representation of the muscle status. For instance, they were limited with respect to the peak muscle forces, number of muscles, and possible muscle activation patterns. DESIGN: This study used a knee surrogate including ten muscles with motor-controlled muscle force activation crossing the knee joint, thus providing a fully muscle-supported knee joint. METHODS: Anterior cruciate ligament tensile force is measured in differe

Proximal hamstring morphology and morphometry in men: an anatomic and MRI investigation.

The proximal musculo-tendinous junction (MTJ) is a common site of hamstring strain injury but the anatomy of this region is not well defined. A morphometric analysis of the proximal MTJs of biceps femoris long head (BFlh), semitendinosus (ST), and semimembranosus (SM) was undertaken from dissection of 10 thighs from five male cadavers and magnetic resonance imaging of 20 thighs of 10 active young men. The length, volume, and cross-sectional area of the proximal tendon, MTJ and muscle belly, and muscle-tendon interface area were calculated. In both groups, MTJs were reconstructed three-dimensio

Muscle strength evaluations after ACL reconstruction.

The quadriceps and hamstring muscle strengths of 16 patients operated using a bone-patellar tendon-bone (BTB) autograft and 32 patients operated using a quadruple hamstring autograft for an arthroscopic anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction were analyzed 4- to 7-years postoperatively. Standardized isokinetic testing, a clinical evaluation and instrumented assessment of knee laxity were done. The findings showed no significant strength deficits between the patients in the BTB and Hamstring groups and the deficits were, in general, small. The quadriceps and hamstring muscle strengths w

Does a bounding exercise program prevent hamstring injuries in adult male soccer players? - A cluster-RCT.

BACKGROUND: Although the Nordic Hamstring Exercise (NHE) prevents hamstring injury in soccer players effectively, the annual incidence of these injuries still increases. This may be because of poor long-term compliance with the program. Furthermore, the timing and amplitude of gluteal and core muscle activation seem to play an important role in hamstring injury prevention, the NHE program was not designed to improve activation of these muscles. Therefore, we propose plyometric training as an alternative to reduce hamstring injuries in soccer players. PURPOSE: To determine the preventive effec

Spasticity and strength changes as a function of selective dorsal rhizotomy.

OBJECT: The goal of this investigation was to quantify changes in hamstring muscle spasticity and strength in children with cerebral palsy (CP) as a function of their having undergone a selective dorsal rhizotomy. METHODS: Nineteen children with CP (CP group) and six children with able bodies (AB group) underwent testing with a dynamometer. For the spasticity measure, the dynamometer measured the resistive torque of the hamstring muscles during passive knee extension at four different speeds. Torque-angle data were processed to calculate the work done by the machine to extend the knee for eac

Semitendinosus muscle fatty infiltration following tendon harvest in rabbits.

The hamstring tendon autograft is one of the most commonly used graft choices in Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction. There are conflicting results regarding postoperative hamstring strength deficits in patients who have had a hamstring graft. The semitendinosus tendon has been shown to regenerate after harvesting for ACL autograft, suggesting that the muscle has the potential to regain normal function. However, no studies have been performed to define the microstructural changes that occur in the semitendinosus muscle after tendon resection. In this study, we hypothesized that fat

Hamstring stiffness and injury risk factors during the handball season in female players.

Monitoring the muscle mechanical properties and functions of female athletes throughout their training season is relevant to understand the relationships between these factors and to predict noncontact injuries, which are prevalent among female athletes. The first aim of this study was to determine whether female handball players' passive stiffness of the hamstring muscles is associated with hamstring extensibility, strength of knee flexors and extensors, and lower limb stiffness. Additionally, the study monitored fluctuations in these factors over 25 weeks. The study utilized an isokinetic dy
