Analysis of 374 cases of enchondroma, 42% of which were localized in the short bones of the hand. The findings in radiology and pathology are presented and discussed, with special attention to the difficulty of classifying these tumors histologically and distinguishing them from chondrosarcoma. The recurrence rate in the short bones of the hand was 9%, and 19% in the long tubular bones. It was especially high after mere currettage of the tumor.

Although aneurysmal bone cysts are a well-known, well described clinical entity, their presence in small bones of the hand are not a common occurrence. Only 13 previous cases involving the bones of the hand have been reported in the English literature. Of these 13, only seven involved the phalanges and no previous case has been described involving the distal phalanx of the thumb. Because these lesions may demonstrate aggressive local biologic behavior, when the diagnosis of aneurysmal bone cyst of the small bones of the hand is considered, prompt diagnostic and therapeutic intervention should

OBJECTIVE: To characterize the features and prevalence of radiographic abnormalities of the wrist in children with Kashin-Beck disease (KBD) and to determine whether the presence of radiographic abnormalities in the wrist correlates with the severity of KBD.
DESIGN AND PATIENTS: Two hundred and eight posteroanterior radiographs of the right hand (including wrist) in children with KBD, ranging in age from 4 to 11 years (mean age 7.7 years), from endemic areas of China were reviewed. Carpal bony margins were evaluated for blurring, thinning, irregularity with and without sclerosis, interruption

The hand is a complex anatomical structure with the component bones susceptible to a combination of environmental and genetic factors that may affect the bone length and width. The alterations may involve a single bone or specific group of bones. The metacarpophalangeal pattern profile (MCPP) developed by Poznanski, Garn, and others (Poznanski et al. Birth Defects VIII (5): 125-131, 1972) is a graphic representation of the relative lengthening and shortening of the 19 tubular bones of the hand useful for diagnosis, comparison of dissimilar patients, and gene carrier detection. The profile hand

Giant cell tumor (GCT) is a benign but locally aggressive neoplasm generally located in the epiphysis and metaphysis of the long bones. Its occurrence in the bones of the hand is rare. Giant cell tumors occurring in the hand account for only 2% of all the GCTs reported. The epimetaphyseal region of short long bones is a common site of GCTs in the hand; however, a phalangeal GCT originating in the distal phalanx is extremely rare. We present the clinical, radiological and histopathological findings of a case of GCT of the distal phalanx of the left ring finger presenting with a fungating mass a

OBJECTIVE: Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is commonly associated with short stature, but it is unclear whether this is exclusively secondary to fractures and bone deformities or whether there is a primary defect in longitudinal bone growth. As metacarpal and phalangeal bones are rarely affected by fractures and deformities, any length deficits in these bones should reflect a direct disease effect on longitudinal growth. This study therefore assessed the relationship of hand bone length with clinical OI type and genotype.
STUDY DESIGN: Prospective study.
RESULTS: The length of all 19 tubular ha

PURPOSE: There is an increasing need for pedicle screw positioning while decreasing radiation exposure. This study compares intra-operative radiation dose using posterior internal fixation using impedancemetry-guided pedicle positioning by the Pediguard system versus standard free-hand sighting when surgery was performed with a trainee or expert surgeon.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Using the electrical properties of bone, the Pediguard detects iatrogenic penetration of the pedicle wall and gives auditory feedback to the surgeon. A single centre, two surgeons (one experienced and the other novice) c

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the relationship between hand bone mineral density (BMD) and radiographic joint damage, and between hand BMD and fractures in 50-70 year old women with longstanding RA.
METHODS: Demographic, clinical data, and imaging data on hand radiographs and Genants vertebral deformity score on spine radiographs were collected from 135 women with RA of > or =5 years, recruited from three European rheumatology clinics. Metacarpal hand BMD was measured by digital hand x ray radiogrammetry (DXR), and hip and lumbar spine BMD by dual x ray absorptiometry (DXA). Multiple regression a

PURPOSE: Multiple hereditary exostoses (MHEs) comprise a rare skeletal disorder. This study aimed to elucidate the natural history and characteristics of hand exostoses by focusing on their progression or regression and their association with shortening and angular deformation of the finger bones.
METHODS: Of 60 MHE patients who presented to our hospital between 2005 and 2019, 32 patients (62 hands) who underwent hand x-ray examinations were included in a study of initial presentation. Among them, 15 patients (30 hands) who underwent consecutive x-ray examinations before epiphyseal closure we

BACKGROUND: Brachydactyly has been described on physical examination in patients with Smith-Magenis syndrome (SMS). Metacarpophalangeal pattern profile analysis (MCPPPA), a method of graphic depiction of the relative size of the bones of the hand, has been used to objectively evaluate radiographs of the hand in patients with SMS in two small series: a single case and a study of four patients. This technique has confirmed brachydactyly and has suggested conflicting MCPPPA results.
OBJECTIVE: The purpose of our study was to evaluate the hand by MCPPPA in a large series of patients with SMS.

Fifteen patients with Crouzon syndrome were evaluated for abnormalities of hand bone length via metacarpophalangeal pattern profile analysis. Data from this group were compared to that from a normal control sample. A discriminant function, utilizing Z scores based on the lengths of three hand bones, was derived and distinguished between the two samples at a rate of 88.3%. The discriminant variables selected in the function represented hand bones that are prominently involved in ACS type V and ACPS type II, syndromes that feature craniofacial abnormalities not unlike those in Crouzon syndrome.

Two flaps, namely the free vascularized iliac bone graft supplied by the deep circumflex iliac artery (DCIA) and the superficial circumflex iliac artery perforator flap supplied by the superficial circumflex iliac artery (SCIA), can be individually harvested from a single surgical field. We report two cases treated by these free flaps for severe hand injury with large skin defect and osteomyelitis. Sequential chimeric flaps were anastomosed between the ascending branch of the DCIA and the SCIA. The advantage of this method is more freedom in the flap insetting for complex tissue defects. For t

The radiologic features of Paget's disease of the bones of the hand are similar to involvement in other bones. Widening of the diameter of the bone and loss of cortical medullary distinction with a mottled coarsening of the trabecular pattern are the most characteristic features. In 2 cases reported here, there was a mixture of lysis and sclerosis with a preponderance of lysis. In the lytic phase the bone structure may be weakened and predisposed to pathologic fracture. Prior to the trauma that precipitated the fracture, both cases were asymptomatic. However, the occurrence of fractures in the

The objective of the present work was to study the differences between the morphological features of the wounds in the long tubular bones inflicted by joinery hand saws designed for longitudinal and transverse, sawing. The experimental injuries to the femoral bones were inflicted by the recurring and reciprocating saw movements. The hand saws had 5 mm high "sharp" and "blunt"-tipped teeth. A total of 40 experiments were carried out. It was shown that the sawcuts across the femoral bones and their edges have different size, shape, and morphological characteristics (defects, ledges, projections,

Fifth metacarpal bone shortening (brachymetacarpia V) was recently described to be highly prevalent in children with familial short stature (FSS). To characterize the hand bones of FSS patients with and without brachymetacarpia V, the left hand bone age radiographs of 26 FSS children were reviewed. In 16/19 patients with clinical brachymetacarpia V radiographs revealed fifth metacarpal bone shortening with a gap of 2 mm or more between the distal end of the fifth metacarpal bone and a tangential line connecting the distal ends of the third and fourth metacarpal bones. Only one of 7 patients wi

In man, the pisiform bone occupies an unusual place among the carpal bones. It is situated in an anterior plane to the other bones, sheathed within the tendon of the flexor carpi ulnaris, and ossifying almost four years the last of the carpal bones. Many theories have tried to explain the presence of this "exceptional" bone: the first theory, proposed by Flower and Mivart, suggested the possibility that this bone could be a sesamoid. The second theory supposes a polydactyl hand, assuming that polydactyly preceded pentadactyly; the pisiform would then be a post-minimus vestigial bone according

The article analyses modern methods for the restoration of of defects in the metacarpal bones, based on microsurgical techniques. A case is described in which a new method for one-stage reconstruction of the hand in combined traumatic defect in the first and second metacarpal bones and an extensive defect in the soft tissues on the back of the hand was used. The hand was reconstructed by means of a vascularized complex autograft on a common vascular pedicle which included two separate fragments of the scapula and a fascial flap of the scapular region. With the application of the described meth
