Head impact exposure measured in a single youth football team during practice drills.

OBJECTIVE This study evaluated the frequency, magnitude, and location of head impacts in practice drills within a youth football team to determine how head impact exposure varies among different types of drills. METHODS On-field head impact data were collected from athletes participating in a youth football team for a single season. Each athlete wore a helmet instrumented with a Head Impact Telemetry (HIT) System head acceleration measurement device during all preseason, regular season, and playoff practices. Video was recorded for all practices, and video analysis was performed to verify head

Head injury resulting from scooter accidents in Rome: differences before and after implementing a universal helmet law.

OBJECTIVES: To estimate the incidence rates and related determinants of head injuries before and after the implementation of a new universal helmet law in Italy. METHODS: The investigation took place in the Emergency Room of the Accident and Emergency Department, Teaching Hospital 'Umberto I', Rome, in 1999 (before the new law), and 2000 (two periods after the new law). Personal data, injury circumstances, helmet use, others involved in injury and health data, were collected. Incidence rates by time period were calculated and differences between groups were analysed. Logistic regression model

Variability in vehicle and dummy responses in rear-end collisions.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to quantify the occupant response variability due to differences in vehicle and seat design in low-speed rear-end collisions. METHODS: Occupant response variability was quantified using a BioRID dummy exposed to rear-end collisions in 20 different vehicles. Vehicles were rolled rearward into a rigid barrier at 8 km/h and the dynamic responses of the vehicle and dummy were measured with the head restraint adjusted to the up most position. In vehicles not damaged by this collision, additional tests were conducted with the head restraint down and at dif

Concussion in professional football: location and direction of helmet impacts-Part 2.

OBJECTIVE: National Football League game video was analyzed for the typical locations of severe helmet impacts in professional football. By use of selected cases that were reconstructed in laboratory tests and reported previously, the magnitude and direction of force causing concussion was determined for these locations. METHODS: Multiple video views were obtained for 182 severe helmet impacts that occurred between 1996 and 2001. From a top view, the helmet was divided into 45-degree quadrants with 0 degrees eyes forward. From a side view, it was divided into seven equal levels, four (+Q1 to

Diagnosis and management of posterior plagiocephaly.

OBJECTIVE: The management of infants with posterior plagiocephaly has been controversial both because of widely differing estimates in the literature of the relative frequencies of true lambdoidal synostosis vs positional molding and because of divergent approaches to treating this problem in different institutions. Based on our experience, we hypothesized that the vast majority of children with posterior plagiocephaly did not have true synostosis and that the cosmetic impairment in such patients could be effectively treated with nonsurgical modalities. METHODS: Between 1992 and 1995, we pros

Warning signal detection and the acoustic environment of the motorcyclist.

A two-part study was undertaken to investigate warning signal detection by motorcyclists. First the acoustic environment was established for both the helmeted and bareheaded rider between speeds of 0 and 100 mph. For the helmeted rider it was found that below 20 mph vehicle noise was dominant and between 20 and 40 mph there was a variable contribution from both vehicle and wind noise. At 40 mph wind noise became the dominant sound source and increased linearly with the log10 of speed from 90 dB(A) to reach 112 dB(A) at 100 mph. Sound levels were consistently 18 dB(A) greater for the bareheaded

The head-pad in art and medicine: a forgotten nasal protector.

From the beginning of the 16th century the use of the padded cap to prevent injuries of the middle-face and skull in infants during their period of learning to walk is documented in art and medicine. Especially the painters of the Dutch and Flemish schools left beautiful paintings and drawings showing children with head-pads. Till the end of the 18th century the use of the head-pad was widely spread over Europe. In the 19th century the educational concepts of Rousseau and Kant probably induced a rejection and an abolition of this useful protective cap, which has been rediscovered during the pa

An Experimental Platform Generating Simulated Blunt Impacts to the Head Due to Rearward Falls.

Impacts to the back of the head due to rearward falls, also referred to as "backfall" events, represent a common source of TBI for athletes and soldiers. A new experimental apparatus is described for replicating the linear and rotational kinematics of the head during backfall events. An anthropomorphic test device (ATD) with a head-borne sensor suite was configured to fall backwards from a standing height, inducing contact between the rear of the head and a ground surface simulant. A pivoting swing arm and release strap were used to generate consistent and realistic head kinematics. Backfall e

Finite Element Model of a Deformable American Football Helmet Under Impact.

Despite the use of helmets in American football, brain injuries are still prevalent. To reduce the burden of these injuries, novel impact mitigation systems are needed. The Vicis Zero1 (VZ1) American football helmet is unique in its use of multi-directional buckling structures sandwiched between a deformable outer shell and a stiff inner shell. The objective of this study was to develop a model of the VZ1 and to assess this unique characteristic for its role in mitigating head kinematics. The VZ1 model was developed using a bottom-up framework that emphasized material testing, constitutive mod

Brain tissue analysis of impacts to American football helmets.

Concussion in American football is a prevalent concern. Research has been conducted examining frequencies, location, and thresholds for concussion from impacts. Little work has been done examining how impact location may affect risk of concussive injury. The purpose of this research was to examine how impact site on the helmet and type of impact, affects the risk of concussive injury as quantified using finite element modelling of the human head and brain. A linear impactor was used to impact a helmeted Hybrid III headform in several locations and using centric and non-centric impact vectors.

Assessment of polyurethane spheres as surrogates for military ballistic head injury.

SYNBONE® spheres were impacted with 7.62 × 39 mm mild steel core ammunition at a mean impact velocity of 654 m/s, SD 7 m/s, to simulate engagement distances of around 50-100 m. The wounds and fracture patterns were assessed by two forensic pathologists familiar with military cranial injury. The overall fracture pattern was assessed as being too comminuted when compared with actual injury. This suggests the SYNBONE® spheres have less utility for simulating military injury than other purposes described in the literature.

[Injury and death in motorcyclists: Umbrella review].

The growing use of motorcycles has improved urban mobility, but has also increased morbidity, mortality, and accident-related costs, especially in low- and middle-income countries. The main consequences include traumatic brain injury, disability, hospital expenditures, and loss of productivity among young adults. The objective was to assess the impact of motorcycle crashes on injuries, healthcare costs, and economic losses through an umbrella review (2000-2025) and to identify the most effective preventive interventions. The review followed PRISMA 2020 guidelines and was registered in PROSPERO

Vibrating mesh nebuliser positioning during helmet CPAP: A thermo-hygrometric bench-top study.

OBJECTIVES: Aerosol therapy during helmet continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is clinically relevant but technically challenging. Evidence regarding the optimal nebuliser position during helmet CPAP is lacking. This bench study assessed thermo-hygrometric changes at the distal end of a simulated trachea across different vibrating mesh nebuliser positions during helmet CPAP, using these changes as indirect indicators of aerosol reaching the airway model. METHODS: A bench-top study was performed using an ASL 5000 lung simulator connected to a simulated trachea and head model. The aerosol

Quantifying Effects of Design Features on Youth Bicycle Helmet Performance During Oblique Impacts.

PURPOSE: Cycling is a leading cause of youth sports-related head injury in the U.S. Although youth bicycle helmets sold in the U.S. comply with safety standards limiting head linear acceleration, there needs to be more information on relative differences in protection between helmets that pass. Additionally, studies have yet to look at quantifying youth bicycle helmet performance with respect to their design. METHODS: Twenty-one youth bicycle helmet models were subjected to oblique impacts at three locations and two impact speeds where peak linear acceleration (PLA) and peak rotational accele

Temporal Instability of Motorcycle Crash Fatalities on Local Roadways: A Random Parameters Approach with Heterogeneity in Means and Variances.

Motorcycle accidents can impede sustainable development due to the high fatality rate associated with motorcycle riders, particularly in developing countries. Although there has been extensive research conducted on motorcycle accidents on highways, there is a limited understanding of the factors contributing to accidents involving the most commonly used motorcycles on local roads. This study aimed to identify the root causes of fatal motorcycle accidents on local roads. The contributing factors consist of four groups: rider characteristics, maneuvers prior to the crash, temporal and environmen

What factors contribute to e-scooter crashes: A first look using a naturalistic riding approach.

INTRODUCTION: Shared dockless electric scooters (e-scooters) are a popular shared mobility service providing an accessible last-mile transportation option in urban and campus environments. However, city and campus stakeholders may hesitate to introduce these scooters due to safety concerns. While prior e-scooter safety studies have collected injury data from hospitals or riding data under controlled or naturalistic conditions, these datasets are limited and did not identify risk factors associated with e-scooter riding safety. To address this gap in e-scooter safety research, this study collec
