From 1975 to 1982 investigations of 64 hedgehogs for anthropozoonoses and infectious diseases were carried out in all regions of Styria, Austria. The serological investigations revealed positive results against rickettsiosis, (Q-fever and RMSF-groups antigen), (ornithosis, toxoplasmosis, listeriosis, against adenoviruses and herpesvirus). Other studies by NOSEK et al. (1967); TROGER et al. (1976); KAASERER et al. (1976) and STUNZNER et al. (1976) report on the hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus) as indicator for the distribution of infectious diseases. The present study should help to clarify this

Happle-Tinschert syndrome (HTS) and Curry-Jones syndrome (CJS; OMIM 601707) are rare, sporadic, multisystem disorders characterized by hypo- and hyperpigmented skin patches following Blaschko's lines, plus acral skeletal and other abnormalities. The blaschkoid pattern implies mosaicism, and indeed CJS was found in 2016 to be caused by a recurrent postzygotic mutation in a gene of the hedgehog signalling pathway, namely SMO, c.1234C>T, p.Leu412Phe. More recently the original case of HTS was found to carry the same somatic mutation. Despite this genetic and phenotypic overlap, two significant di

OBJECTIVE: Indian Hedgehog (Ihh) is the ligand that activates the Hedgehog pathway (HH) in the skeleton-the main controller of endochondral ossification. We aimed at assessing serum levels of Ihh in patients with ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and the effect of serum from patients with AS on HH pathway activation.
METHODS: Serum Ihh levels were measured in 59 patients with AS, 70 patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), and 53 healthy subjects. The effect of serum from patients with AS on HH pathway activation was evaluated using an osteoblast-like cell line model.
RESULTS: Patients with AS not

Borrelia burgdorferi sensu lato and Anaplasma phagocytophilum are two tick-borne pathogens of medical and/or veterinary importance which are distributed worldwide. Erinaceus roumanicus, the Northern white-breasted hedgehog, is a common synanthropic species that is known to carry not only the hedgehog tick, Ixodes hexagonus, but also I. ricinus, the most common European tick species. I. ricinus is the main vector of both mentioned pathogens. Within this framework and because only limited information is available on the role of E. roumanicus in the ecology of B. burgdorferi s.l. and Anaplasma ph

Tick-borne zoonoses pose a major challenge to human and animal health, driving efforts to monitor the distribution, intensity, and diversity of their causative agents. Within the One Health framework, which links human, animal, and environmental health, integrated surveillance strategies are increasingly needed. However, most studies focus on tick vectors, while vertebrate reservoirs are often overlooked due to labour-intensive sampling, the need for specialized skills, and legislative or species protection constraints. This study evaluated whether carcasses of accidentally killed wildlife (pr

Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica serovar Enteritidis (S. Enteritidis) is the second most common serovar causing human salmonellosis in Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ). Sequence type (ST)183, which includes phage types 9a and 11, was the second most frequently isolated S. Enteritidis strain from human cases between 2020 and 2023. This ST is considered endemic in NZ as well as in mainland Europe and Great Britain, where the European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus) is a recognized wildlife reservoir. Hedgehogs were introduced to NZ in the late 19th century; however, their role in the ecology of ST183

The results of coproscopical examinations in domestic animals and hedgehogs carried out as routine diagnostics in the years 2003 to 2012 at the Institute for Parasitology, University of Veterinary Medicine Hannover, Germany, are presented. Of 3475 horse faecal samples, 30.1% contained stages of strongyles and 1.3% eggs of Strongyloides westeri and Parascaris equorum, respectively. The most frequently observed parasite stages in 1416 cattle faecal samples were Eimeria oocysts (21.3%) and strongyle eggs or larvae (15.9%). Dictyocaulus viviparus larvae and Fasciola hepatica eggs were identified i

Western European hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus) are frequently admitted to wildlife rehabilitation centres, where infectious diseases may affect recovery and raise One Health concerns. This study aimed to identify bacterial isolates recovered from hedgehog samples submitted for suspected gastrointestinal infection and to characterise their antimicrobial susceptibility profiles. Five bacterial isolates were analysed using the MicroScan WalkAway Plus® system with the Neg-Urine-Combo 98 panel, and the results were interpreted in accordance with EUCAST guidelines. The identified bacteria included

Assessment of wildlife health and welfare is an increasingly important tool in identifying environmental stressors affecting species of conservation concern. An improved understanding of physiological responses to stress can inform management practises and provide methods for detecting factors that may influence individual and population viability. Faecal glucocorticoid metabolites (FGMs) are a popular non-invasive proxy for stress. To measure FGMs, the chosen assay must be sensitive to changes, and biological validation is required to demonstrate that these changes are relevant responses to s

Dental and periodontal disease are common findings in Western European hedgehogs (Erinaceus europaeus) admitted into rehabilitation but are rarely studied. This study aimed to collect data on the prevalence and characteristics of dental and periodontal disease in Western European hedgehogs admitted into an animal shelter in northwestern Germany. A full body examination including a dental assessment was conducted on all 95 hedgehogs admitted between 15 August 2024 and 15 April 2025. Indices judging calculus, gingivitis, gingival recession, and tooth mobility were assessed and added up to an ove

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Giardia duodenalis is a flagellate protozoan parasite of several mammals, that is transmitted via the fecal-oral route and causes gastrointestinal diarrheal illness. Molecular analyses of several genetic markers have classified G. duodenalis into eight assemblages (A to H) exhibiting different host specificities. Assemblages A and B have zoonotic potential and infect a broad range of hosts. The European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus) is one of the wild species well-adapted to live in close proximity to humans. Therefore, surveying potential zoonotic parasites harbored by hed

The European hedgehog (Erinaceus europaeus), common in rural and suburban environments, is perceived as declining within its native range, prompting conservation concerns. This study of hedgehogs admitted to a French rehabilitation center aimed to identify causes of death, detect potential emerging diseases, and systematically screen dead hedgehogs for toxicants and hemopathogens. Using clinical information, necropsy examination, and ancillary testing in 159 dead hedgehogs, we identified the primary cause of death of 92% of them. The leading causes of death were impaired general condition (30%

Medulloblastoma (MB) is the most common malignant brain tumor in children, classified into four molecular subgroups: WNT, sonic hedgehog (SHH), Group 3, and Group 4. The SHH pathway is crucial in the pathogenesis of SHH-subgroup MB (SHH-MB), influenced by mutations in patched homolog 1 (PTCH1), smoothened (SMO), and suppressor-of-fused (SUFU). Targeting this route has shown potential, with vismodegib, an SMO inhibitor, demonstrating effectiveness in both preclinical and clinical investigations. Notwithstanding its therapeutic promise, vismodegib's systemic toxicity, especially bone abnormaliti

The mammalian tongue is an intricate skeletal muscle organ. From its initial formation to maturation, tongue muscle development involves precisely coordinated processes during embryonic and fetal phases of myogenesis. Extensive research on the regulatory pathways involved in tongue epithelial taste organ development has shown that the Hedgehog (HH) signaling pathway is vital to the formation and epithelial patterning of the tongue and taste organs. Emerging evidence also points to its involvement in the initial formation and spatial patterning of the tongue muscle. HH signaling is a well-estab

The Hh signaling pathway critically drives tumorigenesis and progression in multiple cancers, including gastrointestinal cancers such as gastric, hepatic, pancreatic, esophageal, and colorectal cancer. Aberrant Hh signaling pathway activation, often driven by ligands such as Sonic Hedgehog (Shh) and transcription factors such as Gli1/2, promotes tumor cell proliferation, survival, metastasis, cancer stem cells, and chemoresistance while inhibiting programmed cell death pathways. High levels of Hh signaling pathway activity are a characteristic feature of gastrointestinal cancers. Therapeutic t

Protein lipoengineering is a promising approach for programming biomolecular assembly and function, yet its use has remained confined to biologically inert lipids. Here, we repurpose the hedgehog autoprocessing domain as a biocatalyst to install the anticancer sterol abiraterone as a noncanonical post-translational modification (ncPTM) on an intrinsically disordered protein scaffold. Artificial abirateronylation produced protein-drug conjugates (PDCs) with significantly enhanced solubility, tunable phase behavior, and dynamic self-association. The conjugates underwent slow hydrolytic release o

Trisomy 21 (T21), the cause of Down syndrome, impairs cilia-dependent Sonic Hedgehog (SHH) signaling. We investigated how T21 affects SHH signaling at the primary cilium and found that Smoothened (SMO) protein, the main effector of SHH signaling, is diminished in T21 primary cilia. Specifically, T21 cells exhibit both decreased SMO localization to cilia and reduced SMO activation. Our findings suggest that reduced ciliary SMO in T21 results from defective entry into the cilium rather than impaired transport to centrosomes. Moreover, unlike the ciliogenesis defects observed in T21, the SMO defe

The evolutionarily conserved RNA exosome complex modulates gene expression during development. Mutations in RNA exosome complex subunits have been implicated in various human brain disorders, suggesting that defects in RNA decay are linked to impaired neural development. In our study, we identified de novo variants of EXOSC10 in microcephalic individuals. The patient's phenotype can be replicated by heterozygous conditional knockout of Exosc10 in the developing mouse forebrain. The heterozygous loss of Exosc10 in the developing mouse cortex leads to increased cell cycle exit, with a premature
