[Uterus duplex with hematometrocolpos and ipsilateral agenesis of the kidney].

BACKGROUND: Malformations of the mullerian-duct-system occur with an incidence of about 0.001-0.005% of the population, and they are frequently associated with unilateral agenesis of the kidney. CASE: A 12-year-old girl presented to our emergency department with cyclic abdominal pain which increased with each of her menses. Ultrasound investigation showed a uterus duplex with obstructed hemivagina and hematometrocolpos as well as an ipsilateral absence of the kidney. Additionally, a cystic expansion in the small pelvis was detected which required further investigations (MRT and MR-angiography

Novel management of vaginal chronic graft-versus-host disease causing haematometra and haematocolpos.

Genital chronic graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) in women posthaematopoietic cell transplantation may cause vaginal mucosal sclerosis. Human papillomavirus (HPV) reactivation, also common post-transplantation, limits local immunosuppressive, but not oestrogen treatment. A 36-year-old nulliparous woman developed coincidental genital chronic GVHD and HPV 22 months after transplant for aplastic anaemia. Topical immunosuppression for GVHD led to an eruption of warts successfully treated with laser surgery and cone biopsy. She maintained normal ovarian function and used extended cycle combined horm

Outcomes and management of mullerian anomalies in female patients with complex congenital birth defects of cloacal exstrophy and anorectal malformation.

INTRODUCTION: Females born 46,XX with the severe malformations of cloacal exstrophy (CE) and cloacal anomalies (CA) have high rates of mullerian abnormalities leading to outflow tract obstruction (OTO) of menses, invasive surgeries, and/or chronic pain. This study aims to discuss long-term surgical outcomes of mullerian structures in a single major institution with a high volume of CE and CA patients. METHODS: A prospectively maintained database was reviewed for CE and CA patients. The patient database was received for CE and CA female patients. Data on mullerian anatomy at birth, hormone sup

Missed diagnosis of imperforate hymen later presenting with hypertension.

An adolescent girl presented with hypertension and was found to have haematocolpos and imperforate hymen. She had a background of chronic abdominal pain and had sought medical attention multiple times prior, with the diagnosis being missed as pubertal evaluation and perineal examination had been neglected during those visits. Hypertension resolved following hymenectomy and drainage of haematocolpos with no long-term sequelae.

Secondary pyosalpinx after reconstructive surgery of vaginal agenesis patient with bilateral hematosalpinx: A case report.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Congenital or hypoplasia vaginal agenesis is a very rare condition caused by the failure of developmental Mullerian ducts. The prevalence is 0.001%-0.025% populations. This condition often misdiagnosed because the symptom does not appear. Acute symptoms such as abdominal pain may occur due to the obstruction of retrograde menstrual flow. In this case, we presented a case complex management of vaginal atresia with pyosalpinx, hematometra and bilateral hematosalpinx. PRESENTATION OF CASE: A 12 years old teenager, non-sexually active, complained cyclic abdominal pain

Value of routine ultrasound examination at 35-37 weeks' gestation in diagnosis of fetal abnormalities.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the potential value of routine ultrasound examination at 35-37 weeks' gestation in the diagnosis of previously unknown fetal abnormalities. METHODS: This was a prospective study of 52 400 singleton pregnancies attending for a routine ultrasound examination at 35 + 0 to 36 + 6 weeks' gestation; all pregnancies had a previous scan at 18-24 weeks and 47 214 also had a scan at 11-13 weeks. We included pregnancies resulting in live birth or stillbirth but excluded those with known chromosomal abnormality. Abnormalities were classified according to the affected major organ

Characterising acute gynaecological pathology with ultrasound: an overview and case examples.

This article summarises the ultrasound features of a number of gynaecological emergencies: ectopic pregnancy, haemorrhagic corpus luteum, twisted adnexa, pelvic inflammatory disease, acute myoma necrosis, haematocolpos and haematometra. The basis of all diagnosis in women with acute gynaecological conditions is history and clinical examination. An ultrasound examination should only be performed if it is likely to provide information that would change the likelihood of the diagnosis suspected on the basis of clinical data. If ultrasound findings are abnormal, then it is important to thoroughly

Evaluation of Gynecological Mass Lesions Using Magnetic Resonance Imaging: An Observational Study.

BACKGROUND: Gynecological masses in females comprise benign and malignant masses. These lesions have become a great concern for gynecologists and radiologists because the pelvic organs are aligned in such proximity that any masses arising from these organs may share similar signs and symptoms. Though ultrasonography is the first preference to investigate these masses, it has limited value because of its poor acoustic windows, poor depth of penetration, and operator dependency. Computed tomography is devoid of soft tissue contrast and becomes more complex when discriminating pelvic lesions from

Case Report: a novel variant in WT1 leads to focal segmental glomerulosclerosis and uterovaginal anomalies through exon skipping.

BACKGROUND: Podocytopathies are a varied set of renal diseases in which podocytes are unable to perform their typical filtration function within the glomerulus. This typically leads to edema, proteinuria, and hypoalbuminemia early in life. Among podocytopathies, focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) is characterized by histology demonstrating segmental and focal sclerosis of the glomerular tuft. FSGS affects an estimated 1-20 per one million individuals and leads to significant morbidity and mortality related to renal failure. While FSGS can be attributed to many causes, such as drug react

Long-term gynecological outcome of patients with persistent cloaca.

PURPOSE: Persistent cloaca is a complex malformation that remains a difficult reconstructive challenge, and data on long-term outcome are scarce. Gynecological abnormalities are common with cloaca but may remain asymptomatic until puberty or adult life. We evaluate long-term gynecological sequelae in these patients with persistent cloaca. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The records and radiographs of postpubertal patients (mean age 16.8 years, range 10 to 32) treated for cloacal malformation at 1 institution from 1970 to 2001 were retrospectively reviewed. Outcome data at puberty were available in 41

Routine 36-week scan: diagnosis of fetal abnormalities.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate further the incidence and types of fetal abnormality identified at a routine 36-week ultrasound examination, which had not been diagnosed in previous scans at 20 weeks and 12 weeks' gestation, and to report the fetal abnormalities that are diagnosed only postnatally. METHODS: This was a prospective study of 104 151 women with a singleton pregnancy attending for a routine ultrasound examination at 35 + 0 to 36 + 6 weeks' gestation. In each case, a detailed examination was carried out for the diagnosis of fetal abnormality. All women had undergone a previous ultrasoun

Congenital abnormalities of the urogenital tract: the clue is in the cord?

Congenital abnormalities of the female urogenital tract are not uncommon, with an estimated incidence of 2-4% across the female population. Within this population, up to 40% will have associated renal tract abnormalities. A previously well 12-year-old girl presented to the emergency department with abdominal pain, vomiting and a palpable pelvic mass. Ultrasound and MR scans were performed. The imaging revealed a didelphys uterus, an obstructed hemivagina and ipsilateral renal agenesis, characteristic of Herlyn-Werner-Wunderlich syndrome. The patient was noted at birth to have a single umbilica

Mayer-Rokitansky-Kuster-Hauser syndrome and anal canal stenosis: case report and review of literature.

Mayer-Rokitansky-Kuster-Hauser (MRKH) is a characteristic syndrome in which the mullerian structures are absent or rudimentary. It is also associated with anomalies of the genitourinary and skeletal systems. There are very few cases reported regarding its association with anorectal malformations, particularly perineal fistulas. To the best of our knowledge, there have not been any reported cases of anal canal stenosis in patients with MRKH. We describe a very rare association of MRKH with anal canal stenosis and multiple renal calculi. The patient underwent corrective surgery for the anomalies
