Sexual minorities are at elevated risk of cardiovascular disease from a younger age than heterosexuals.

Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death worldwide. In this study, we assessed factors related to cardiovascular disease risk and outcomes among sexual minorities (SM). Data from multiple waves of the PATH study were used in this analysis. Multivariable regression models were used to assess the association between sexual identity and: tobacco or e-cigarette use, adverse cardiovascular events, and age at first diagnosis of adverse cardiovascular disease events. In our sample (N = 23,205), 1,660 (7.15%) participants identified as SM. SM men, relative to heterosexual men, are more lik

'Doing' kinship: heterosexual parents' experiences of non-genetic parenthood through donor conception.

RESEARCH QUESTION: How do Dutch heterosexual parents who achieved parenthood through donor conception navigate non-genetic parenthood and kinship? DESIGN: A qualitative in-depth semi-structured interview study was performed between September 2018 and January 2019 with both partners of 13 Dutch heterosexual couples where the male partner suffered from infertility and who conceived a child with the help of a sperm donor. Interview questions were based on literature and clinical experiences of experts in the field of donor conception. Interviews were transcribed and analysed using thematic analy

Addressing sexually transmitted infections in the sociocultural context of black heterosexual relationships in the United States.

RATIONALE: Black girls and women are disproportionately affected by sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and human immunodeficiency virus/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (HIV/AIDS). Research shows sexual networks, sexual concurrency, and assortative mixing impacting racial disparities in STI/HIV. However, the underlying sociocultural conditions of these phenomenon have yet to be fully explored within a framework of Black girls' and women's sexual development. OBJECTIVE: This grounded theory study investigated the sociocultural conditions and processes of becoming a sexual Black woman in

HIV and syphilis testing behaviors among heterosexual male and female sex workers in Uganda.

BACKGROUND: In Sub-Saharan Africa where HIV disproportionately affects women, heterosexual male sex workers (HMSW) and their female clients are at risk of acquiring or transmitting HIV and other STIs. However, few studies have described HIV and STI risk among HMSW. We aimed to assess and compare recent HIV and syphilis screening practices among HMSW and female sex workers (FSW) in Uganda. METHODS: Between August and December 2019, we conducted a cross-sectional study among 100 HMSW and 240 female sex workers (FSW). Participants were enrolled through snowball sampling, and an interviewer-admin

Substance Use and School Characteristics in Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Heterosexual High School Students.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco, alcohol, and illicit drug use among lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) high school students as well as related environment and school-level risk and protective factors were examined. METHODS: Data was acquired from the 2015 CDC's Youth Behavior Risk Survey for Kentucky (N = 2577). Prevalence of substance use was calculated for all high school respondents by reported sexual orientation. Multivariate analyses estimated the relationship between school and environmental-level factors (eg, having an adult to talk to) and tobacco, alcohol, and illicit drug use via logistic regres

Approach bias for erotic stimuli in heterosexual male college students who use pornography.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Addicted individuals often demonstrate relatively automatic action tendencies in response to addiction-related stimuli, whereby they approach rather than avoid addictive stimuli. This study assessed whether an approach bias for erotic stimuli exists among heterosexual college-aged males who report using pornography. METHODS: We tested 72 male undergraduate students using an approach-avoidance task employing erotic stimuli, during which participants were instructed to push or pull a joystick in response to image orientation. To simulate approach and avoidance movements, pu

Heterosexual oral and anal sex in Kinshasa (D.R.Congo): Data from OKAPI prospective cohort.

BACKGROUND: Sexually transmitted infections can be spread through oral and anal heterosexual sex. There are few data on these practices in Sub-Saharan Africa. We analyzed the prevalence of heterosexual oral and anal sex among HIV Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT) attendees in Kinshasa and the associated sociodemographics, perceptions and behavioral factors. METHODS: OKAPI (Observational Kinshasa AIDS Prevention Initiative) prospective cohort study. It evaluates the VCT impact on HIV-related knowledge and behaviors at 6 and 12-month follow-up. Since April 2016 until April 2018, 797 person

HIV-1 heterosexual transmission and association with sexually transmitted infections in the era of treatment as prevention.

OBJECTIVES: HIV-1 heterosexual transmission among individuals on antiretroviral treatment (ART) with undetectable viremia is extremely rare. The aim of this study was to evaluate the risk of sexual HIV-1 transmission and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in HIV-1 serodifferent couples while the index partner is on ART. METHODS: HIV transmission was evaluated in 200 HIV-1 heterosexual serodifferent couples in a stable relationship (≥3 months). All HIV-positive individuals had been on ART for ≥3 months and had been followed up for a median preceding time of 4.5 years (range 0.3-16 ye

The relationship between methamphetamine use and heterosexual behaviour: evidence from a prospective longitudinal study.

AIMS: To estimate the extent to which specific sexual behaviours (being sexually active, having multiple sex partners, casual sex, condomless casual sex, anal sex and condomless anal sex) change during periods of methamphetamine use. DESIGN: Within-person estimates for the relationship between methamphetamine use and sexual behaviour were derived from longitudinal panel data from the Methamphetamine Treatment Evaluation Study (MATES) cohort (2006-10). SETTING: Sydney and Brisbane, Australia. PARTICIPANTS: Participants (n = 319) were recruited through treatment and other health services, sel

It's a Process: Reactions to HIV Diagnosis and Engagement in HIV Care among High-Risk Heterosexuals.

After HIV diagnosis, heterosexuals in high-poverty urban areas evidence delays in linkage to care and antiretroviral therapy initiation compared to other groups. Yet barriers to/facilitators of HIV care among these high-risk heterosexuals are understudied. Under the theory of triadic influence, putative barriers to HIV care engagement include individual/attitudinal-level (e.g., fear, medical distrust), social-level (e.g., stigma), and structural-level influences (e.g., poor access). Participants were African-American/Black and Hispanic adults found newly diagnosed with HIV (N = 25) as part of

Estimating the Number of Heterosexual Persons in the United States to Calculate National Rates of HIV Infection.

BACKGROUND: This study estimated the proportions and numbers of heterosexuals in the United States (U.S.) to calculate rates of heterosexually acquired human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection. Quantifying the burden of disease can inform effective prevention planning and resource allocation. METHODS: Heterosexuals were defined as males and females who ever had sex with an opposite-sex partner and excluded those with other HIV risks: persons who ever injected drugs and males who ever had sex with another man. We conducted meta-analysis using data from 3 national probability surveys that m

Relational Intimacy and Sexual Frequency: A Correlation or a Cause? A Clinical Study of Heterosexual Married Women.

Researchers and practitioners have noted the importance of using clinical samples in sex therapy research. This study investigated the relationship between perceived levels of marital intimacy, sexual frequency, and sexual functioning among heterosexual married women. A clinical sample of 67 women completed the Couples Satisfaction Index (CSI), the Miller Social Intimacy Test (MSI), the Sexual Satisfaction Scale for Women (SSS-W), the Inclusion of the Other in the Self Scale (IOS), and the Female Sexual Functioning Index (FSFI-6). Data analyses revealed that marital intimacy acted as a predict

Alcohol-related victimisation: Differences between sexual minorities and heterosexuals in an Australian national sample.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Alcohol-related violence and other types of victimisation are prevalent, but unevenly distributed across the population. The study investigated the relationship between alcohol-related victimisation and sexual orientation (heterosexual, homosexual, bisexual, other) in a national sample. DESIGN AND METHODS: The study used cross-sectional data from the 2010 Australian National Drug Strategy Household Survey. Logistic regression was used to assess the association of sexual orientation with three types of victimisation (verbal abuse, physical abuse and feeling threatened by

Partner Human Papillomavirus Viral Load and Incident Human Papillomavirus Detection in Heterosexual Couples.

BACKGROUND: The association between partner human papillomavirus (HPV) viral load and incident HPV detection in heterosexual couples is unknown. METHODS: HPV genotypes were detected in 632 human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-negative couples followed for 2 years in a male circumcision trial in Rakai, Uganda, using the Roche HPV Linear Array. This assay detects 37 genotypes and provides a semiquantitative measure of viral load based on the intensity (graded 1-4) of the genotype-specific band; a band intensity of 1 indicates a low genotype-specific HPV load, whereas an intensity of 4 indicates a

Outcome predictors of Internet-based brief sex therapy for sexual dysfunctions in heterosexual men.

The authors investigated whether baseline and therapy process characteristics of 82 heterosexual men participating in an Internet-based sex therapy study predict posttreatment sexual functioning. Problem severity, baseline sexual desire and baseline sexual satisfaction, but also partner problems and quality of the therapeutic relationship are predictive for sexual functioning and sexual satisfaction after finishing Internet-based sex therapy. The obtained outcome predictors could benefit men with sexual dysfunctions by tailoring online therapy programs to their individual characteristics. In a

Phylogenetic analyses reveal HIV-1 infections between men misclassified as heterosexual transmissions.

OBJECTIVE: HIV-1 subtype B infections are associated with MSM in the UK. Yet, around 13% of subtype B infections are found in those reporting heterosexual contact as transmission route. Using phylogenetics, we explored possible misclassification of sexual exposure among men diagnosed with HIV in the UK. DESIGN: Viral gene sequences linked to patient-derived information were used to identify phylogenetic transmission chains. METHODS: A total of 22,481 HIV-1 subtype B pol gene sequences sampled between 1996 and 2008 were analysed. Dated phylogenies were reconstructed and transmission clusters
