Artificial intelligence-based image recognition in bronchoscopy: software development and randomized controlled trial for training evaluation in intensive care residents.

BACKGROUND: Flexible bronchoscopy is an essential tool for airway management and both diagnostic and therapeutic interventions, particularly in critical care. Accurate identification of tracheobronchial structures is crucial but challenging for less experienced clinicians, often leading to prolonged procedures and increased complication risks. Simulation-based training using virtual reality or manikins has shown promise, and recent studies suggest that artificial intelligence (AI)-based training outperforms self-directed learning. Limited data exist comparing AI-based bronchoscopy training to

Inappropriately Firing Defibrillator: A Simulation Case for Emergency Medicine Residents.

INTRODUCTION: Emergency physicians must be able to manage inappropriately firing defibrillators. Many physicians may not experience this high-risk, low-frequency patient presentation during residency. We created this simulation to increase residents' knowledge of basic defibrillator function and confidence in managing patients with malfunctioning defibrillators. METHODS: Sixteen emergency medicine residents of all levels of training participated in this curriculum. The educational experience began with a lecture. Residents then managed the simulated patient encounter in groups of four. The pa

Analysis of the need for realistic circumcision manikin design as a learning resource for medical students in the clinical skills laboratory: mixed methods study.

INTRODUCTION: Circumcision is a Level 4A clinical skill in the Indonesian Medical Doctor Competency Standards (Standar Kompetensi Dokter Indonesia [SKDI]) that every medical graduate must master. However, learning is currently hampered by the limited availability of manikins with adequate anatomical and functional realism, resulting in procedural training that is not fully safe, standardized, or meaningful. This study aims to analyse the need for a realistic circumcision manikin design as an effective learning resource by exploring the perspectives of students, lecturers, instructors, experts,

How facilitators use healthcare students' mistakes to promote reflections and discussions during simulation debriefings.

BACKGROUND: Simulation-based training is increasingly used in healthcare education. It allows students to practice in realistic environments using high-fidelity patient simulators and to engage with complex or rare diagnoses without risking harm to real patients. During the debriefing phase, students and facilitators reflect on actions taken and discuss what went well and what could be improved in future simulation sessions. To engage in productive reflection, students must be aware of their mistakes and performance gaps. Although the literature emphasizes the importance of providing both posi

Meningococcal Meningitis with Waterhouse-Friderichsen Syndrome.

AUDIENCE: This scenario was developed to educate junior and senior emergency medicine (EM) residents. It can also be cut short to be used for 4th year EM bound medical students. INTRODUCTION: Meningococcal meningitis is a devastating disease that can cause severe neurologic sequelae if not diagnosed early and treated appropriately. In 2017, Centers for Disease Control reports a rate of 350 cases (0.11 cases per 100,000) which makes it an extremely rare disease. The highest reported rate is under the age of 1 (0.69 in 100,000) with second peak in adolescents and young adults between the ages o

Towards improved particle reconstruction for single-molecule localization microscopy using geometric deep learning.

MOTIVATION: Single-molecule localization microscopy (SMLM) can resolve intracellular structures down to the nanoscale, but often produces sparse and incomplete data. Particle averaging (PA) can aid with the reconstruction of complete structures, but traditional PA methods can suffer from template bias or the high computational costs of geometric alignment. RESULTS: To address these limitations, we developed a geometric deep learning (GDL) framework for enhanced, template-free 3D particle averaging. Our pipeline uses a GDL autoencoder, trained on high-fidelity simulated data, to map incomplete

A SAGE-GAT Hybrid Network With Dynamic Node Interaction for Fault Diagnosis of Civil Aircraft Landing Gear System.

Fault diagnosis of civil aircraft landing gear systems is critically hindered by high-dimensional electromechanical coupling, which leads to confusing faults where distinct failures manifest similar sensor patterns. While graph neural networks (GNNs) can model system topology, standard approaches rely on static or local attention and fail to capture the higher order dynamic interactions essential for distinguishing such faults. We propose a novel SAGE-GAT Hybrid Network enhanced with a dynamic node interaction attention (DNIA) mechanism. This core innovation explicitly integrates domain-inform

The Effects of Training on Anxiety and Task Performance in Simulated Suborbital Spaceflight.

INTRODUCTION: In commercial spaceflight, anxiety could become mission-impacting, causing negative experiences or endangering the flight itself. We studied layperson response to four varied-length training programs (ranging from 1 h-2 d of preparation) prior to centrifuge simulation of launch and re-entry acceleration profiles expected during suborbital spaceflight. We examined subject task execution, evaluating performance in high-stress conditions. We sought to identify any trends in demographics, hemodynamics, or similar factors in subjects with the highest anxiety or poorest tolerance of th

Curriculum Innovation: The Impact and Benefits of Cross-Disciplinary Educational Collaboration Between a Department of Neurology and Department of Drama.

INTRODUCTION AND PROBLEM STATEMENT: Simulation-based education is increasingly used in neurology training. Incorporating drama students as simulated patients and family members is a feasible approach to high-fidelity simulation, but formal evaluations and longitudinal outcomes of cross-disciplinary educational collaborations are limited. To address this gap, our neurology and drama departments jointly developed a simulation curriculum and assessment of its impact on educational outcomes of residents, and healthcare perception and performance skills of drama students. OBJECTIVES: Objectives of
