Resuscitation skills after Helping Babies Breathe training: a comparison of varying practice frequency and impact on retention of skills in different types of providers.

BACKGROUND: Helping Babies Breathe (HBB), a basic neonatal resuscitation curriculum, improves early neonatal mortality in low-resource settings. Our goal was to determine retention of resuscitation skills by different cadres of providers using the approved HBB Spanish translation in a rural clinic and community hospital in Honduras. METHODS: Twelve clinic and 37 hospital providers were trained in 1 d HBB workshops and followed from July 2012 to February 2014. Resuscitation skills were evaluated by objective structured clinical evaluations (OSCEs) at regular intervals. Clinic providers practic

Reevaluation of the type species and redescription of five species of Edessa (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae: Edessinae).

In accordance with the rules in the International Code of Zoological Nomenclature, the type species for the genus Edessa Fabricius, 1803 is now recognized to be Cimex antilope Fabricius, 1798 rather than the previously recognized Cimex cervus Fabricius, 1787. Edessa antilope is redescribed, as well as the following four species that have in the past been related or compared to E. antilope: E. arabs (Linnaeus, 1758) from French Guiana, Costa Rica and Panama (new record), E. helix Erichson, 1848 from Costa Rica, Panama, Venezuela, Suriname (new record), Guyana, Brazil (new record), Bolivia (new

Socioeconomic disadvantage accounts for most of the early childhood development gap among children of adolescent mothers: A cross-national analysis of 15 Latin American and Caribbean countries.

Children of adolescent mothers face elevated risks of early childhood development (ECD) delay. Whether this reflects maternal age or the socioeconomic disadvantage that predisposes young women to early childbearing remains debated. We conducted a secondary analysis of Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey data (rounds 5 and 6, 2013-2022) from 15 Latin American and Caribbean countries, comprising 23,650 children aged 36-59 months. Using survey-weighted regression with cluster-robust standard errors, we examined associations between adolescent motherhood and ECD scores, discipline practices, and bel

Nursing leadership in emergency and critical care settings: An explanatory mixed-method study.

BACKGROUND: Most of the available evidence regarding nursing leadership in emergency and critical care settings does not show how it is experienced in low-income healthcare systems. This study aimed to analyze the association between self-reported leadership behavior among emergency and critical care nurses and selected organizational outcomes. METHODS: An explanatory mixed-method design was conducted in a tertiary public hospital in Honduras. The quantitative phase included emergency and critical care nurses surveyed by using a validated questionnaire. Binary logistic regression was performe

Epitope mapping of vaccine antigens Tc24 and TSA1 with antibodies from Trypanosoma cruzi-infected patients.

Chagas disease is a zoonotic disease caused by Trypanosoma cruzi parasites. Tc24 and TSA1 parasite antigens are leading candidates for a therapeutic vaccine to treat infected patients to stop/delay the progression of chronic cardiomyopathy. As these antigens are nearing clinical trials, we aimed to assess their epitope recognition profile by antibodies from Chagas disease patients to better understand their immunogenicity in humans. Peptide microarrays covering Tc24-C4 and TSA1-C4 vaccine antigens were incubated with IgG from 27 T. cruzi-infected patients from Argentina, Honduras and Mexico. M

Fulminant disseminated histoplasmosis in a pediatric patient with ataxia-telangiectasia and autoimmune hepatitis: A diagnostic and therapeutic challenge.

Disseminated histoplasmosis (DH) is a common opportunistic mycosis in endemic regions, yet it remains underreported in pediatric patients with primary immunodeficiency or acquired immunosuppression. We present the clinical progression and fatal outcome of DH in a 12-year-old female from southeastern Honduras with an established diagnosis of Ataxia-Telangiectasia (AT) and Autoimmune hepatitis (AIH) managed with daily prednisone (1 mg/kg/day) and azathioprine (2 mg/kg/day), presented with fever, non-productive cough and progressive hypoxemic respiratory failure. Psychometric Assessment of Screening Measures for Depression, Anxiety, Somatization, and Life Satisfaction in Honduran University Students.

This study evaluated the structural, convergent, and discriminant validity, invariance, and internal consistency of the Generalized Anxiety Disorder-7 (GAD-7), Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9), Somatic Symptom Scale-8 (SSS-8), and Satisfaction with Life Scale (SWLS) among 910 students at the National Autonomous University of Honduras. Mental health issues are common among university students, with anxiety, depression, and somatization often co-occurring from a transdiagnostic perspective. Life satisfaction, meanwhile, is recognized as a protective factor for mental well-being. In respons

Molecular Insights into Cell-Mediated Immunity in Atypical Non-Ulcerated Cutaneous Leishmaniasis.

Leishmania (Leishmania) infantum chagasi infections range from asymptomatic (AS) to severe visceral leishmaniasis (VL). One of the manifestations is an atypical non-ulcerated cutaneous leishmaniasis (NUCL), which occurs in some locations of Central America with few cases of VL. We conducted a transcriptomic analysis of cell-mediated immunity (CMI) on blood samples from NUCL, AS, VL patients from Amapala, Honduras, and healthy controls. RNA-seq revealed a similar perturbation of gene expression in NUCL and AS. Eight gene signatures of CMI were found in NUCL involved in CD8+ T lymphocyte infiltr

A community-based education program about cervical cancer improves knowledge and screening behavior in Honduran women.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined changes in knowledge and behavior after a community-based cervical cancer education program in Honduras. METHODS: The program consisted of radio broadcasts targeting rural women and presentations to community nurses. The effectiveness of the radio broadcasts was assessed using a cross-sectional design (control groups n = 124, n = 243; intervention group n = 233). A pre-/post-test design was used to evaluate the nurses' training program (n = 32). A subset of nurses (n = 16) was retested two years later. Evaluation included t tests, chi-square and Fisher exact an

Saliendo adelante: Understanding trauma and resilience in immigrant families from Central America.

Fleeing extreme poverty and violence and seeking safety and survival, families have increasingly migrated to the United States from El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. Limited scholarship has explored the transgenerational transmission of strategies for resilience, survival, and agency among Central American migrant families. Using constructivist grounded theory methods, this study sought to better understand these processes by exploring the transgenerational transmission of trauma and resilience in the context of forced migration and family separation within a sample of 24 mothers and youth

Zika virus: a new arboviral public health problem.

Zika virus (ZIKV) is a single-stranded RNA virus in the Flaviviridae family and transmitted to human through infected mosquitos (Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus). Virus is closely related with other flaviviruses; dengue virus, yellow fever virus, West Nile virus, and Japanese encephalitis virus phylogenetically. Due to the possible relationship between virus and clinical features including microcephaly, ventricule, and eye deformities, Guillain-Barre syndrome increases the interest on this virus gradually. Along with the vector-borne transmission, exposure via blood transfusion and sexual c

Reflections on the maternal mortality millennium goal.

BACKGROUND: Nearly every 2 minutes, somewhere in the world, a woman dies because of complications of pregnancy and childbirth. Every such death is an overwhelming catastrophe for everyone confronted with it. Most deaths occur in developing countries, especially in Africa and southern Asia, but a significant number also occur in the developed world. METHODS: We examined the available data on the progress and the challenges to the United Nations' fifth Millennium Development Goal of achieving a 75 percent worldwide reduction in the maternal mortality by 2015 from what it was in 1990. RESULTS:

Health status and health-related quality of life in survivors of cancer in childhood in Latin America: a MISPHO feasibility study.

Cancer is an increasing cause of disease-related death in childhood within developing countries, where the great majority of the world's children reside. The improving prospects for survival in such children, and the corresponding challenge of undertaking economic evaluations of related health interventions, provide a stimulus to study the health-status and health-related quality of life in survivors of cancer in childhood in Latin America. Spanish language versions of questionnaires for proxy assessors, based on the Health Utilities Index (HUI), were used to elicit responses from parents and

Mapping occurrence of Taenia solium taeniosis/cysticercosis and areas at risk of porcine cysticercosis in Central America and the Caribbean basin.

BACKGROUND: This study aimed to map the occurrence of Taenia solium taeniosis/cysticercosis at national level within Central America and the Caribbean basin, and to map the distribution of porcine cysticercosis at first-level administrative subdivision level (department level) and the porcine population at risk. This zoonotic parasite is believed to be widely endemic across most of Latin America. However, there is little information readily available for Central America and the Caribbean basin. Taenia solium has been ranked the most important foodborne parasitic hazard globally and within ende
