Development of an assessment method for freely moving nonhuman primates' eating behavior using manual and deep learning analysis.

PURPOSE: Although eating is imperative for survival, few comprehensive methods have been developed to assess freely moving nonhuman primates' eating behavior. In the current study, we distinguished eating behavior into appetitive and consummatory phases and developed nine indices to study them using manual and deep learning-based (DeepLabCut) techniques. METHOD: The indices were utilized to three rhesus macaques by different palatability and hunger levels to validate their utility. To execute the experiment, we designed the eating behavior cage and manufactured the artificial food. The total

Quality of life improvements with setmelanotide treatment in acquired hypothalamic obesity: TRANSCEND trial interview results from US participants.

INTRODUCTION: Acquired hypothalamic obesity (HO), caused by hypothalamic injury, is characterized by hyperphagia (i.e., insatiable hunger and abnormal food-seeking behaviors), reduced energy expenditure, and accelerated and sustained weight gain, all of which substantially impact quality of life. In the Phase 3, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled TRANSCEND trial (ClinicalTrials.gov identifier: NCT05774756), setmelanotide demonstrated significant improvements compared with placebo in body mass index, hunger, symptoms of hyperphagia, and quality of life in participants with acquired HO

The hazards of skipping meals and losing sleep for ride-hailing drivers-evidence based on quasi-experimental and experience sampling methodology.

The rapid growth of ride-hailing services, driven by big data and platform algorithms, has intensified physiological stressors among drivers, particularly during peak mealtime periods, where hunger and sleep deprivation ("skipping meals and losing sleep") have become prevalent occupational hazards. While prior research has separately documented the adverse effects of hunger and sleep loss on self-control, their synergistic impact on driving safety remains underexplored, especially in ecologically valid settings. Guided by the self-control strength model, this study investigated how hunger and

Food insecurity and risk of cholera: A cross-sectional study and exploratory analysis of potential mediators.

BACKGROUND: Food insecurity has been independently associated with developing cholera and there is an inverse relationship between national food security and annual cholera incidence. However, the factors that mediate the risk of cholera among food insecure households remain largely unexplored. METHODOLOGY AND PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: In a cross-sectional survey of rural households in Haiti, we explored the role of food behaviors (i.e., dietary choices and food-handling practices) as mediators of cholera risk among food-insecure families. We generated a series of multivariable regression models to

Dyspnea, Acute Respiratory Failure, Psychological Trauma, and Post-ICU Mental Health: A Caution and a Call for Research.

Dyspnea is an uncomfortable sensation with the potential to cause psychological trauma. Patients presenting with acute respiratory failure, particularly when tidal volume is restricted during mechanical ventilation, may experience the most distressing form of dyspnea known as air hunger. Air hunger activates brain pathways known to be involved in posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), anxiety, and depression. These conditions are considered part of the post-intensive care syndrome. These sequelae may be even more prevalent among patients with ARDS. Low tidal volume, a mainstay of modern therapy

Development and initial validation of a self-report measure to assess eating disorder-specific interoceptive perception.

Interoceptive deficits-particularly with respect to the perception of emotions, hunger, and satiety-constitute important targets for intervention in eating disorders (EDs). Suitable self-report measures to identify these deficits, however, are lacking. We, therefore, developed and validated a multidimensional questionnaire to assess eating disorder-specific interoceptive perception (EDIP) in terms of the ability to perceive and discriminate between emotions, hunger, and satiety. In two independent samples with a total of 2058 individuals (22.74% with self-reported EDs), exploratory and confirm

The Ghrelin-AgRP Neuron Nexus in Anorexia Nervosa: Implications for Metabolic and Behavioral Adaptations.

Anorexia Nervosa (AN) is viewed as primarily a psychiatric disorder owing to the considerable behavioral and genetic overlap with mood disorders and other psychiatric traits. However, the recent reconceptualization of AN as one of both psychiatric and metabolic etiology suggests that metabolic circuits conveying hunger, or sensitive to signals of hunger, may be a critical nexus linking metabolic dysfunction to mood disturbances. Within the brain, hunger is primarily percieved by Agouti-related (AgRP) neurons and hunger increases plasma concentrations of the hormone ghrelin, which targets ghrel

Satiety effects of psyllium in healthy volunteers.

Controlling hunger between meals is a challenge for many individuals. This manuscript comprises 2 sequential clinical trials investigating the effects of psyllium (Metamucil) on satiety, both using a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled cross-over design. The first study determined the effects of 3.4 g, 6.8 g, and 10.2 g of psyllium taken before breakfast and lunch for 3 days. The second study determined the effects of 6.8 g (taken before breakfast and lunch on Days 1 and 2 and before breakfast on Day 3) on the satiety of participants receiving an energy restricted meal in the morning

Poverty, obesity, and malnutrition: an international perspective recognizing the paradox.

In the year 2000, multiple global health agencies and stakeholders convened and established eight tenets that, if followed, would make our world a vastly better place. These tenets are called the Millennium Development Goals. Most of these goals are either directly or indirectly related to nutrition. The United Nations has led an evaluation team to monitor and assess the progress toward achieving these goals until 2015. We are midway between when the goals were set and the year 2015. The first goal is to "eradicate extreme poverty and hunger." Our greatest responsibility as nutrition professio

The correlation between patient satiety sensation and total gastric fluid volume: a prospective observational study.

PURPOSE: Surgical patients are asked to adhere to preoperative fasting guidelines to minimize gastric contents. Large fluid volumes or solid content can still be present as shown with gastric ultrasound. It has been suggested that additional rating of patients' satiety, measured as the feeling of hunger and thirst, could help clinicians to better judge emptying of the stomach. METHODS: We performed a prospective observational study in fasted elective surgical patients. The primary objective was to investigate the correlation between hunger measured on a 0-10 numeric rating scale and total gas

Use of an operant task to estimate food reinforcement in adult humans with and without BED.

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to demonstrate the utility of food-reinforced operant task performance in modeling binge-eating disorder (BED). We hypothesized that food reinforcement after a caloric preload would be related to BED status, but not hunger. METHODS AND PROCEDURES: We investigated the association between reports of hunger, binge tendency, and food reinforcement in a sample of 18 women (12 non-BED, 7 lean, 5 obese, and 6 obese BED). Participants completed two sessions of operant task performance after consuming 600 ml of flavored water or 600 ml of a 1 kcal/ml liquid mea

Impulsive Sports Betting: The Effects of Food or Substance Consumption.

The present study aimed to explore how food or substance consumption (e.g., experiencing hunger, or having consumed alcohol or recreational drugs) could shape consumer impulsive spending on sports betting products. Based on a large online sample of Australian sports bettors, we found that participants with higher hunger level, or having consumed more alcohol or recreational drugs, tended to have increased impulsive bet size. These impulsiveness effects had both direct and indirect effect components. The significant direct effects confirmed that positive relationships directly existed between h

Satiation restores brood care motivation in the female mouthbrooder Pseudocrenilabrus multicolor (Cichlidae).

The maternal mouthbrooder Pseudocrenilabrus multicolor takes up her eggs during spawning and carries them continuously in her mouth for 10-11 days at 27 degrees C. Then the young-by that time able to swim-are released from the mouth. The duration of mouthbrooding is controlled by an internal timing program in the mother [12]. In non-first-spawners brood care motivation (= readiness to take up brood into the mouth and keep it there) disappears within a few hours after brood removal. At the same time hunger-which is reduced to half of the normal level when brood care motivation is present-increa

Suppression of eating by fenfluramine in patients with bulimia nervosa.

Fifteen patients with bulimia nervosa received fenfluramine (60 mg po) or placebo under double-blind, randomly ordered conditions. Two hours later food was presented. Significantly less food was eaten after fenfluramine and the quantity eaten was inversely correlated with serum fenfluramine levels. Significantly fewer patients reported bulimic symptoms during the test after fenfluramine, but no significant effect was demonstrated after leaving the ward. Fenfluramine caused drowsiness but did not reduce hunger ratings. Similarly, eating failed to reduce hunger ratings normally in the patients.

Post-prandial acyl ghrelin infusion in heart failure patients increases gastric emptying rate.

Acyl ghrelin increases cardiac output (CO) and contractility in patients with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF). In healthy humans, acyl ghrelin increases gastric emptying rate (GER) and hunger, a potential add-on benefit for HFrEF patients suffering from cachexia with symptoms of delayed gastric emptying and loss of appetite. The aim of this study was to determine if post-prandial acyl ghrelin infusion increases GER and hunger in HFrEF patients compared to CO. HFrEF patients (n = 29) arrived fasted and received a 500-kcal breakfast followed by 1.5 g paracetamol. They next r

Appetite-Suppressing and Satiety-Increasing Bioactive Phytochemicals: A Systematic Review.

The prevalence of obesity is increasing worldwide. Bioactive phytochemicals in food supplements are a trending approach to facilitate dieting and to improve patients' adherence to reducing food and caloric intake. The aim of this systematic review was to assess efficacy and safety of the most commonly used bioactive phytochemicals with appetite/hunger-suppressing and/or satiety/fullness-increasing properties. To be eligible, studies needed to have included at least 10 patients per group aged 18 years or older with no serious health problems except for overweight or obesity. Of those studies, 3

The clinical pharmacology of appetite suppressant drugs.

One way of gaining a greater understanding of the central mechanisms underlying hunger and the regulation of feeding behaviour in humans is to examine the actions and interactions on hunger and food intake of drugs with known or presumed pharmacological modes of action. To this end we have undertaken a number of studies which fall into three main categories: the mechanisms by which amphetamine anorexia is induced; the possible role of endogenous opioids in feeding; the action of amino acids thought to be involved in the regulation of feeding. In this field the potential for cross-fertilization

Long-term opiate receptor antagonism in a patient with panhypopituitarism: effects on appetite, prolactin and demand for vasopressin.

As endogenous opiates are known to be involved in regulation of appetite, an obese patient with panhypopituitarism and frequent episodes of ravenous hunger was treated with the oral opiate antagonist naltrexone for 13 months. This resulted in loss of body weight and attacks of severe hunger. The increased serum prolactin concentration and the dose of vasopressin required for substitution could be reduced. Long-term application of opiate antagonists may be useful in related cases.
