The relative toxicity of three legacy and six emerging brominated flame retardants* was studied in the male Harlan Sprague Dawley rat. Perfluorochemical (PFC) liquids have both low surface tension and a high capacity to dissolve O2 and CO2, and have been shown to improve gas exchange and lung compliance in animal models of lung injury. We have previously demonstrated that perflubron and other PFC liquids enhance transgene expression in lungs of spontaneously breathing normal rodents after intratracheal instillation of either adenoviral or liposomal vectors followed by a single instillation of PFC liquid. The toxicity and carcinogenicity of methyl bromide (MeBr) were studied in male and female Wistar rats exposed by inhalation to 0, 3, 30 or 90 ppm MeBr 6hr/day, 5 days/wk for 29 months. BACKGROUND: Hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) is an additive flame retardant used in the textile industry and in polystyrene foam manufacturing. Because of its lipophilicity and persistency, HBCD accumulates in adipose tissue and thus has the potential of causing metabolic disorders through disruption of lipid and glucose homeostasis. However, the association between HBCD and obesity remains unclear.

BACKGROUND: The low toxicity of perfluorocarbons (PFCs), their high affinity for respiratory gases and their compatibility with lung surfactant have made them useful candidates for treating respiratory diseases such as adult respiratory distress syndrome. We report results for treating acute allergic and non-allergic bronchoconstriction in sheep using S-1226 (a gas mixture containing carbon dioxide and small volumes of nebulized perflubron).
