Potentially Inappropriate Medication and Polypharmacy in Nursing Home Residents: A Cross-Sectional Study.

Inappropriate prescribing in the elderly is a risk factor for higher adverse drugs reactions, hospitalisation, and mortality rates. Therefore, it is necessary to identify irrational prescriptions and implement interventions to improve geriatric clinical practices in nursing homes. This study aimed to examine and compare the prevalence of potentially inappropriate medications in nursing home residents using three different updated criteria: 2019 Beers criteria, PRISCUS list, and v2 STOPP criteria, and to determine the prevalence of potential prescribing omissions according to v2 START criteria.

Appropriateness of antibiotic prescribing in veterans with community-acquired pneumonia, sinusitis, or acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Studies that have assessed antibiotic appropriateness in acute respiratory tract infections (RTIs) with a likely bacterial etiology have focused only on antibiotic choice and ignored other important aspects of prescribing, such as dosing, drug-drug interactions, and duration of treatment. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to determine the prevalence and predictors of inappropriate antibiotic prescribing practices in outpatients with acute bacterial RTIs (community-acquired pneumonia [CAP], sinusitis, or acute exacerbations of chronic bronchitis [AECB]). METHODS: This retrospec

Osteoporosis treatment gap and prescribing patterns in Ireland: a cross-sectional analysis of the DXA HIP project.

OBJECTIVES: Previous studies suggest Ireland has the smallest osteoporosis treatment in Europe and very little inappropriate prescribing, in contrast to our experience. In this study, we examine the osteoporosis treatment gap in Ireland by assessing the prevalence of appropriate and inappropriate prescribing in 2 subgroups of the Irish dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) Health Informatics Prediction (HIP) Project. Treatment eligibility was defined using established intervention thresholds, including prior fracture, femoral-neck T-score ≤-2.5, glucocorticoid use, or Fracture Risk Assessment

Polypharmacy and the role of physical medicine and rehabilitation.

Polypharmacy and inappropriate prescribing practices lead to higher rates of mortality and morbidity, particularly in vulnerable populations, such as the elderly and those with complex medical conditions. Physical medicine and physiatrists face particular challenges given the array of symptoms treated across a spectrum of conditions. This clinical review focuses on polypharmacy and the associated issue of potentially inappropriate prescribing. The article begins with a review of polypharmacy along with relevant aspects of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics in the elderly. The adverse effect

Evaluating appropriate use of prophylactic colchicine for gout flare prevention.

OBJECTIVE: American College of Rheumatology and European League Against Rheumatism guidelines recommend colchicine to prevent gout flares in patients initiating and increasing uric acid–lowering therapy until serum uric acid is maintained at ≤6 mg/dl. We aimed to evaluate how well colchicine prescribing practices adhere to these guidelines and to examine factors associated with improved prescribing. METHODS: Electronic medical records were reviewed for 126 patients with active colchicine prescriptions for prophylaxis of gout flares. Colchicine prescribing was defined as inappropriate if 1) no

Economic, cultural and social inequalities in potentially inappropriate medication-An Austrian perspective.

Inappropriate prescribing remains a global challenge with implications for patient outcomes and healthcare costs. A recent Danish nationwide study investigated potentially inappropriate medications (PIMs), defined using a modified screening tool of older persons' prescriptions (STOPP)/screening tool to alert to right treatment (START) framework and their associations with socioeconomic and sociocultural factors. The STOPP-defined PIMs, indicating potential overtreatment, were present in 3.1% and strongly associated with lower income, education, limited social support and living alone, while ST
