Does psychopathy differentially predict treatment-seeking during incarceration versus postrelease?

The notion that high psychopathy inmates seek treatment for non-therapeutic reasons is frequently assumed but lacking empirical evidence. In a sample of 217 suburban jail inmates, we examined whether psychopathy differentially predicted treatment-seeking during incarceration (when extrinsic benefits exist), but not post-release. Overall, analyses revealed no evidence to support this notion. High psychopathy offenders did not artificially seek treatment at a higher rate than their less psychopathic peers during or following incarceration. Further, there was no evidence psychopathy was associate

Mass incarceration, public health, and widening inequality in the USA.

In this Series paper, we examine how mass incarceration shapes inequality in health. The USA is the world leader in incarceration, which disproportionately affects black populations. Nearly one in three black men will ever be imprisoned, and nearly half of black women currently have a family member or extended family member who is in prison. However, until recently the public health implications of mass incarceration were unclear. Most research in this area has focused on the health of current and former inmates, with findings suggesting that incarceration could produce some short-term improve

Incarceration of a pedunculated uterine fibroid in an umbilical hernia.

Uterine fibroids are common benign tumors that may cause an umbilical hernia in patients with increased intra-abdominal pressure due to pregnancy, obesity, ascites, and intra-abdominal tumors. However, the simultaneous occurrence of uterine fibroids and umbilical hernias, or fibroids and an associated umbilical hernia, during pregnancy has rarely been reported. Here, we present the case of a fibroid presenting as an incarcerated umbilical hernia in a menopausal patient.

Unmet Health Care Needs among Children Exposed to Parental Incarceration.

Objectives The incarceration rate in the United States has increased rapidly since the mid-1970s and, accordingly, a large number of children are exposed to parental incarceration. Research finds that parental incarceration is associated with deleterious physical and mental health outcomes among children, but little is known about these children's health care access. Methods I used data from the 2011-2012 National Survey of Children's Health (N = 95,531), a population-based and nationally representative survey of non-institutionalized children ages 0-17 in the United States, to estimate the as

Incarceration of gravid uterus by growing subserosal myoma: case report.

Incarceration of gravid uterus is a rare condition, occurring in one in 3,000 to 10,000 pregnancies during second trimester. Incarceration of uterus can cause several complications, such as uterine rupture, labor dystocia, and uncontrollable postpartum hemorrhage. Early diagnosis is important to prevent these complications, but there are no standard treatments of incarceration of gravid uterus. The authors present a case report of incarceration of gravid uterus caused by growing subserosal myoma, which was treated with myomectomy during second trimester.

Listening to Australian Indigenous men: stories of incarceration and hope.

OBJECTIVE: This paper reports on a project conducted between 2008 and 2011 that was established to allow eight Australian Indigenous men who had been in prison to tell their stories of incarceration. BACKGROUND: The Shed in Western Sydney, NSW, Australia, was set up in response to the high male suicide rate in that area, its objective being to support men at risk. Aboriginal men were the most at risk, and they are presently imprisoned at a rate of 13 times more than non-Indigenous men. This small project sought to give voice to the men behind the statistics and point to a significant problem

Predictors of Incarceration of Veterans Participating in U.S. Veterans' Courts.

OBJECTIVE: Significant variability exists regarding the criteria and procedures used by different veterans' courts (VCs) across the country. Limited guidance is available regarding which VC model has the most successful outcomes. The purpose of this study was to examine factors associated with incarceration during VC participation. METHODS: This study used data for 1,224 veterans collected from the HOMES (Homeless Operations Management and Evaluation System) database of the Department of Veterans Affairs, as well as data from a national phone survey inventory of all U.S. VCs. To identify vari

Posterior interosseous nerve incarceration with endobutton repair of distal biceps.

Distal biceps ruptures are uncommon injuries that comprise approximately 3% of all biceps pathology. This injury is most commonly seen in 40- to 60-year-old men, and the mechanism of injury involves a forceful extension movement to a flexed elbow. Without surgical intervention, patients are left with measurable weakness in elbow flexion and supination as well as a cosmetic deformity that often leaves them dissatisfied. Consequently, early surgical repair is advocated for physically active individuals. A variety of surgical approaches and fixation devices are currently used for distal biceps re

Changes in smoking-related symptoms during enforced abstinence of incarceration.

BACKGROUND: Tobacco use among prisoners is much higher than among the general population. Little is known about changes in smoking-related symptoms during periods of incarceration. The objective of this study is to evaluate changes in smoking-related symptoms during incarceration. METHODS: We recruited 262 inmates from a tobacco-free prison. At baseline, participants were asked about smoking-related symptoms prior to incarceration and then asked about recent symptoms. RESULTS: All symptom scores on the American Thoracic Society Questionnaire (ATSQ) improved during incarceration. Higher ATSQ

Intra-articular peroneal nerve incarceration following multi-ligament knee injury.

Knee dislocation with a common peroneal nerve injury is a serious problem. A case of multi-ligamentous knee injury with the unusual and interesting finding of a common peroneal nerve rupture incarcerated within the knee joint is presented. MRI and arthroscopic images are used to document this occurrence. To date, there are no published reports of a similar finding in the English orthopaedic literature. Level of evidence IV.

Incarceration of Meckel's diverticulum in a left paraduodenal Treitz' hernia.

Meckel's diverticula incarcerated in a hernia were first described anecdotally by Littré, a French surgeon, in 1700. Meckel, a German anatomist and surgeon, explained the pathophysiology of this disease 100 years later. In addition, a congenital paraduodenal mesocolic hernia, known as a Treitz hernia, is a rare cause of small bowel obstruction. These hernias are caused by an abnormal rotation of the primitive midgut, resulting in a right or left paraduodenal hernia. We treated a patient presenting with pain and diagnosed extraluminal air in the abdomen after a computed tomography examination.

Asymptomatic uterine incarceration at term: a rare complication of pregnancy.

BACKGROUND: Uterine retroversion before 12 to 14 weeks' gestation occurs in approximately 15% of pregnancies and is usually considered an innocuous finding. When the uterus remains retroverted as the pregnancy advances, the growing uterine corpus becomes impacted in the hollow of the pelvic cavity and uterine incarceration may develop. Incarcerated retroverted uterus at term is an extremely rare and serious complication of pregnancy. CASE: A 30-year-old primigravida with asymptomatic uterine incarceration at term underwent a challenging Caesarean section because of the distortion of her anato

Incarceration experiences in a cohort of active injection drug users.

BACKGROUND: Incarceration has been associated with a number of health-related harms among injection drug users (IDU). However, little is known about the prevalence and correlates of incarceration among community-based samples of IDU. METHODS: We examined the prevalence and correlates of recent incarceration among IDU in the Scientific Evaluation of Supervised Injecting (SEOSI) cohort examined between 1 July 2004 and 30 June 2006 using generalised estimating equations (GEE). RESULTS: A total of 902 individuals were included in the analysis, of whom 255 (28.72%) were female and 536 (59.42%) re

Transdural cauda equina incarceration after microsurgical lumbar discectomy: case report.

OBJECTIVE AND IMPORTANCE: Complications usually occur when they are least expected. We present an unusual case of nerve entrapment after microsurgical discectomy. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: A patient undergoing uneventful first lumbar microsurgical discectomy developed severe back and leg pain and a progressive neurological deficit during the first postoperative night. Herniation of cauda equina nerve roots had occurred through an unnoticed minimal defect in the dura, which had not caused cerebrospinal fluid leakage. The roots were incarcerated and swollen, and they filled the space of the resect
