An Investigation of the Relationship Between Dietary Patterns in Early Pregnancy and Maternal/Infant Health Outcomes in a Chinese Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Studies assessing links between maternal diet and pregnancy outcomes have focused predominantly on individual nutrients or foods. However, nutrients are typically consumed in combinations of foods or beverages (i.e., dietary patterns). Taking into account the diet as a whole appreciates that nutrient absorption and metabolism are influenced by other nutrients and the food matrix. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between dietary pattern consumption in early pregnancy and pregnancy/infant outcomes, including gestational diabetes mellitus, gestatio

The diagnosis and management of egg allergy.

Egg allergy is a common food hypersensitivity in children. Atopic dermatitis represents the main clinical manifestation in infancy. On first exposure, many of these infants present with urticaria, angioedema, or anaphylaxis. The role of egg allergy in gastrointestinal conditions is less well understood. The "gold standard" for the diagnosis of egg allergy is the double-blind, placebo-controlled food challenge. Diagnostic cut-off levels have been defined for food-specific serum immunoglobulin E antibody level and skin prick test wheal diameter that predict an adverse challenge outcome. This has

Timing of introduction to solid food, eczema and wheezing in later childhood: a longitudinal cohort study.

BACKGROUND: The timing of introduction to solid food has been associated with eczema and wheezing in childhood. Our aim was to determine whether differences persist within the recommended 4 to 6 month age range. METHODS: A longitudinal cohort study with repeated measures was conducted among children from birth to 10 years of age who were participating in the TARGet Kids! practice based research network in Toronto, Canada. The primary exposure was the timing of introduction to infant cereal as the first solid food. The primary outcome was eczema and the secondary outcome was wheezing collected

Epidemiological research drives a paradigm shift in complementary feeding - the celiac disease story and lessons learnt.

Breast milk is the initial natural food for infants, but already during the second half year complementary feeding is essential. Epidemiological research, first on celiac disease and later on atopic diseases, has driven a paradigm shift with respect to most favorable age to introduce complementary feeding. Simplified, this implies a shift from later to earlier introduction, which is now taken into account in recommendations on infant feeding. Complementary feeding, including all foods, should not be initiated for any infant before 4 months of age, and not later than around 6 months, including

[Infant botulism in France, 1991-2009].

Infant botulism is caused by the ingestion of spores of Clostridium botulinum and affects newborns and infants under 12 months of age. Ingested spores multiply and produce botulinum toxin in the digestive tract, which then induces clinical symptoms. A single French case was described in the literature prior to 1991. We describe the cases of infant botulism identified in France between 1991 and 2009. All clinical suspicions of botulism must be declared in France. Biological confirmation of the disease is provided by the National reference laboratory for anaerobic bacteria and botulism at the Pa

Case Report: Food Protein-Induced Protein Losing Enteropathy (FPIPLE) in Infancy.

Food-protein induced protein-losing enteropathy (FPIPLE) is a mixed IgE and non-IgE food allergy in infants along with eosinophilic gastrointestinal (GI) diseases (EGID). It is characterized by poor weight gain, edema, due to hypoproteinemia/hypoalbuminemia by enteral loss of proteins, anemia, eosinophilia, raised fecal α1-antitrypsin (α1AT), and specific-IgE and allergy skin prick test (SPT) positive for offending foods. Here, we describe 4 cases with the same clinical pattern (edema due to hypoproteinemia/hypoalbuminemia from enteral loss of proteins, confirmed by high α1AT in the stools and

Does Breastfeeding Shape Food Preferences? Links to Obesity.

The first 2 years of life have been recognized as a critical window for obesity prevention efforts. This period is characterized by rapid growth and development and, in a relatively short period of time, a child transitions from a purely milk-based diet to a more varied solid-food diet. Much learning about food and eating occurs during this critical window, and it is well-documented that early feeding and dietary exposures predict later food preferences, eating behaviors, and dietary patterns. The focus of this review will be on the earliest feeding experiences - breast- and formula-feeding -

[Evaluation of infant feeding practices after implementation of recommendations for coeliac disease prophylaxis - pilot study].

UNLABELLED: Recent research data concerning the risk of coeliac disease confirm that introduction of food containing gluten during breast-feeding not later than 6 months of life is justified. According to ESPGHAN and EFSA introduction of solid foods in the diet of infants between 4-6 months of age is safe. AIM OF STUDY: Evaluation of feeding practices in healthy full-term infants after implementation of the recommendations of coeliac disease prevention. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Conducted analysis concerned 54 healthy full-term infants, living in Warsaw, aged 6 to 12 months. Of these, 27 childre

Association Between Infant Feeding Modes and Gastroesophageal Reflux: A Repeated Measurement Analysis of the Infant Feeding Practices Study II.

BACKGROUND: Gastroesophageal reflux in neonates is frequently reported by parents, potentially motivating changes in infant feeding mode and/or addition of solid food. OBJECTIVE: The authors prospectively analyzed associations between repeated measurement of feeding modes and reflux in infancy. METHODS: The Infant Feeding Practices Study II, conducted between 2005 and 2007 (2,841 infants), provides data on reflux and feeding modes at nine time points from months 1 to 12. Feeding modes were defined based on direct breastfeeding, feeding of bottled human milk, formula feeding, their combinatio

Timing of Introduction, Sensitization, and Allergy to Highly Allergenic Foods at Age 3 Years in a General-Population Canadian Cohort.

BACKGROUND: Early dietary introduction of highly allergenic foods has been associated with decreased risk of food allergy in high-risk infants. OBJECTIVE: Early introduction of highly allergenic foods for lower risk infants was examined using Canadian Healthy Infant Longitudinal Development (CHILD) Study data. METHODS: CHILD participants were recruited from the general population before birth. Every 6 months, caregivers reported food introduction and allergic reactions. At ages 1 and 3 years, sensitization to peanut, egg, and cow's milk was measured by skin prick testing (SPT) and atopic der

Associations of Healthy Infant Feeding Practices and Early Childhood Adiposity in the Rise & SHINE Cohort.

We studied healthy infant feeding practices among 308 mother-infant pairs, including exclusive breastmilk, satiety cues, complementary food introduction, sugary beverage intake, and bottle use in bed. We examined associations of individual and cumulative infant feeding practices through 12 months of age with body mass index (BMI) z -score at 2 years. Exclusive breastmilk and avoidance of bottle use in bed were associated with lower BMI z -score (β -0.29 units; 95% CI, -0.56, -0.02 units and β -0.32 units; 95% CI, -0.57, -0.07, respectively), when accounting for maternal pre-pregnancy BMI, hous

Allergic sensitisation in early childhood: Patterns and related factors in PARIS birth cohort.

BACKGROUND: Allergic sensitisation is poorly documented in infants. This study aims to provide new insights into allergic sensitisation patterns and related factors in infancy. METHODS: This study concerns 1860 infants involved in the Pollution and Asthma Risk: an Infant Study (PARIS) population-based birth cohort who had a standardised health examination when 18 months old, from 2004 to 2008. Sensitisation was assessed by measurements of serum specific IgE to 12 food and 4 inhalant allergens and defined by IgE≥0.35kUA/L. Information regarding lifestyle and environment were obtained from ques

Complementary Feeding and Child Appetitive Traits in a Sample of Hispanic Mother-Child Dyads.

BACKGROUND: Complementary feeding practices may contribute to toddler eating practices that affect weight outcomes. Studies are needed to understand the relationship between complementary feeding practices and toddler dietary self-regulation. OBJECTIVE: This study tests the hypothesis that earlier complementary food introduction predicts toddler food responsiveness and emotional overeating (ie, tendency to overeat in response to food cues and emotions, respectively), and considers whether introduction of certain foods better predict toddler dietary self-regulation. DESIGN: This study is a se
