Early Gut Microbiota Colonisation of Premature Infants Fed with Breastmilk or Formula with or without Probiotics: A Cohort Study.

Premature infants have a fragile ecology of the gut microbiota, which is associated with many health problems and may be influenced by formula versus breast feeding. The present study investigated differences in the process of gut microbiota colonisation in preterm infants fed with breastmilk or formula with or without probiotics before 12 weeks. This cohort study recruited 138 premature infants; 31 in the breastmilk (BM) group, 59 in the probiotics formula (PF) group and 48 in the non-probiotics formula (NPF) group, according to the feeding practice they received at birth. Gut bacterial compo

Randomized Clinical Trial of Standard- Versus High-Calorie Formula for Methadone-Exposed Infants: A Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: Newborns who are prenatally exposed to methadone are at risk for neonatal abstinence syndrome and the associated excess weight loss and poor weight gain. This pilot feasibility study aimed to evaluate early caloric enhancement on weight patterns among infants born to women receiving methadone maintenance therapy while pregnant. METHODS: In this double-blind pilot feasibility study, we randomly assigned infants with fetal methadone exposure to 24 or 20 kcal/oz formula from days 3 to 21. Randomization was stratified by any breastfeeding, sex of the infant, and gestational age. Eligi

Methemoglobinemia caused by the ingestion of courgette soup given in order to resolve constipation in two formula-fed infants.

Methemoglobinemia is not a rare condition arising from the exposure to hemoglobin-oxidizing agents such as nitrates-nitrites present in well water or vegetables. Infants < 3 months of age are more susceptible than adults because of lower amounts of a key enzyme, NADH-cytochrome b5 reductase, which converts methemoglobin back to hemoglobin. We report 2 infants, aged respectively 2 and 1 months, suffering from methemoglobinemia, fed with a formula that was reconstituted with a high concentration of courgette soup to resolve constipation. They developed a severe cyanosis with methemoglobinemia (r

Feeding strategies for premature infants: beneficial outcomes of feeding fortified human milk versus preterm formula.

BACKGROUND: In a large-scale study of feeding strategies in premature infants (early vs later initiation of enteral feeding, continuous vs bolus tube-feeding, and human milk vs formula), the feeding of human milk had more effect on the outcomes measured than any other strategy studied. Therefore, this report describes the growth, nutritional status, feeding tolerance, and health of participating premature infants who were fed fortified human milk (FHM) in comparison with those who were fed exclusively preterm formula (PF). METHODS: Premature infants were assigned randomly in a balanced two-wa

Challenge confirmation of late-onset reactions to extensively hydrolyzed formulas in infants with multiple food protein intolerance.

BACKGROUND: Many infants with cow's milk protein intolerance have adverse reactions to soy, casein and whey hydrolysate formula and to other foods. The recent development of Neocate, a hypoallergenic, nutritionally complete infant formula composed of individual amino acids and other nutrients, has enabled these infants to be stabilized. OBJECTIVE: We observed the effect of food challenges in infants with reported hypersensitivity to hypoallergenic formulas. METHODS: Eighteen infants (median age, 7 1/2 months) were given Neocate formula for 2 months and then underwent a 7-day double-blind pla

Hyperbilirubinemia in breast-versus formula-fed infants in the first six weeks of life: relationship to weight gain.

Bilirubin determinations were obtained at weekly intervals from 1 to 6 weeks of age in 27 breast-fed and 12 formula-fed term, average size infants. Mean bilirubin levels were significantly higher in breast-fed infants at each age studied. The highest mean bilirubin level in each group was present at 1 week of age, 10.6 (+/- SD 4.6) mg/dl in breast-fed and 4.7 (+/- SD 3.0) mg/dl in formula-fed infants. Thereafter, values gradually fell in both groups. Mean birthweight was not different between the two groups; however, breast-fed infants lost significantly more weight (4.8%) by the time of disch

Microplastics and endocrine-disrupting byproducts (bisphenol A & phthalate esters) in popular infant formula brands in Iran; qualification, quantification and risk assessment.

Concerns regarding the health implications of microplastics (MPs) pollution and their byproducts, such as bisphenol A (BPA) and phthalate esters (PAEs), have escalated, particularly for vulnerable populations like infants. Since infants are primarily nourished by breast milk or infant formula, their heightened exposure risk to these contaminants warrants investigation. This study assessed the presence, morphological characteristics, and associated byproducts (BPA and PAEs) of MPs in commercially available infant formulas sold in the Iranian market. In this descriptive-analytical, cross-section

Effects of non-digestive polymers used in iron encapsulation on calcium and iron apparent absorption in rats fed by infant formula.

Iron deficiency anemia is a common problem of all ages in developed and developing countries. Various strategies are used by governments and industries to solve this problem. One of these strategies is iron fortification. In the present study, novel iron microcapsules were designed without any changes in their effects on other ingredients in infant milk formulas. Resistant starch-pectin-iron and pectin-iron microparticles were added to infant powdered milk models. Furthermore, animal studies were carried out. Fecal iron and calcium were assessed using flame atomic absorption spectroscopy and i

Protein breakdown and release of β-casomorphins during in vitro gastro-intestinal digestion of sterilised model systems of liquid infant formula.

Protein modifications occurring during sterilisation of infant formulas can affect protein digestibility and release of bioactive peptides. The effect of glycation and cross-linking on protein breakdown and release of β-casomorphins was evaluated during in vitro gastro-intestinal digestion (GID) of six sterilised model systems of infant formula. Protein degradation during in vitro GID was evaluated by SDS-PAGE and by measuring the nitrogen content of ultrafiltration (3kDa) permeates before and after in vitro GID of model IFs. Glycation strongly hindered protein breakdown, whereas cross-linking

Infant feeding with soy formula milk: effects on puberty progression, reproductive function and testicular cell numbers in marmoset monkeys in adulthood.

BACKGROUND: This marmoset study addresses concerns about feeding human male infants with soy formula milk (SFM). METHODS: From age 4 to 5 days, seven male co-twin sets were fed standard formula milk (SMA) or SFM for 5-6 weeks; blood samples were subsequently collected at 10-week intervals. Testes from co-twins killed at 120-138 weeks were fixed for cell counts. RESULTS: SFM- and SMA-fed twins showed normal weight gain; puberty started and progressed normally, based on blood testosterone measurements. Body weight, organ weights (prostate, seminal vesicles, pituitary, thymus and spleen) and pe

Effects of exogenous surfactant on acute lung injury induced by intratracheal instillation of infant formula or human breast milk in rabbits.

BACKGROUND: An animal experimental model of acute lung injury after intratracheal instillation of acidified milk products has been recently demonstrated. Exogenous administration of surfactant has proved to be successful treatment for acute lung injury induced by many causes including acid aspiration. The authors conducted this study to investigate whether exogenous surfactant can reduce the magnitude of lung damage induced in rabbits by acidified milk products. METHODS: The lung injury was induced by intratracheal instillation of acidified human breast milk or acidified infant formula (0.8 m

Residual allergenicity in commercial partially and extensively hydrolyzed infant formulas: A combined immunological and mass spectrometric study.

Hypoallergenic infant formulas are widely used for dietary management of cow's milk allergy in infants, yet reliable assessment of residual allergenicity remains important. This study combined immunological assays with high-resolution peptidomics to evaluate the residual allergenicity of partially hydrolyzed (PHF) and extensively hydrolyzed (EHF) products registered as Foods for Special Medical Purposes in China. A laboratory-scale whey protein hydrolysate (WPH) was also prepared for comparison of hydrolysis efficiency and epitope resistance. The PHFs showed marked heterogeneity, with degree o

The Role of Hydrolysed Rice Formula in the Dietary Management of Infants with Cow's Milk Allergy: A UK Healthcare Perspective.

Cow's milk allergy (CMA) remains one of the most common food allergies in infancy, requiring the avoidance of cow's milk and its derivatives. Breast milk is the best source of nutrition for infants. For those infants with CMA whose mothers are unable to breastfeed or choose not to, extensively hydrolysed formulas (eHFs) are widely recommended as first-line milk substitutes, whereas hydrolysed rice formulas (HRFs) are increasingly recognised as a viable alternative. This concept paper provides a healthcare professional (HCP) perspective on HRF, drawing on expert consensus from two meetings conv

Longitudinal analysis of the salivary metabolome of breast-fed and formula-fed infants over the first year of life.

INTRODUCTION: The salivary metabolome has been increasingly studied over the past ten years due to the potential of saliva as a non-invasive source of biomarkers. However, although saliva has been studied in relation to various diseases, its dynamic evolution during life is not known. This is particularly true for the first months of life. Infancy is indeed a critical period during which numerous behavioural and physiological events occur, such as dietary transitions and tooth eruption, which can lead to important biological modifications in the oral cavity. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this work w

Feeding patterns and growth trajectories in breast-fed and formula-fed infants during the introduction of complementary food.

Introduction: several investigations have identified breastfeeding as a protective factor for rapid infant weight gain and childhood obesity while other studies have found that this protective effect could be the result of confounding factors. Objectives: to assess the associations between lactation practices (breast-fed vs formula-fed infants) during the introduction of complementary food period, as well as the following: a) patterns of food intake; and b) trajectories of growth at six, nine and 12 months (z-score of weight, height and body mass index [BMI] and changes in these z-scores from
