Trust in Digital Sexual Health Information Among Chinese College Students: Qualitative Study.

BACKGROUND: Digital platforms are primary sources of sexual health information for young adults, yet they are widely perceived as unreliable. This tension between distrust and reliance remains undertheorized. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to examine how Chinese college students use online sources for sexual health information under conditions of uncertainty and to explore how they navigate the tension between distrust and reliance. METHODS: We conducted semistructured in-depth interviews with 22 Chinese undergraduate students (aged 18-25 years) recruited from 8 universities across China using

Assessing Cancer Patients' Exposure to Treatment Misinformation.

Understanding when and how patients encounter cancer treatment misinformation (CTM) is essential for developing innovative strategies to combat its spread. However, a major challenge in CTM research is the lack of a reliable and valid tool to assess exposure to misinformation. This study aimed to evaluate patients' exposure to CTM through the exposure to cancer treatment misinformation (ECTM) survey. CTM was operationalized as including unproven or disproven cancer treatments, foregoing recommended conventional cancer treatments, and acceptance of myths and misconceptions directly or indirectl

METHODS: Search keyword volume was collected from Yahoo! JAPAN for 2022. Ten exercise-related terms were analyzed to assess exercise interest. Total search activities we

The effect of different information sources on the anxiety level of pregnant women who underwent invasive prenatal testing.

OBJECTIVE: The goal is to explore the effects of age, education, obstetric history and information sources on the (Beck) anxiety levels of pregnant women attending invasive prenatal testing. Results are analyzed through an independent samples t-test and a two-step cluster analysis attempting to categorize patients in terms of the chosen variables. RESULTS: t-Tests reveal that age, education and bad obstetric history do not significantly affect anxiety levels. Descriptive statistics indicate that almost 60% of patients feel

Information behaviour of French-speaking speech-language therapists in Belgium: results of a questionnaire survey.

BACKGROUND: Speech-language therapists (SLTs) are encouraged to implement evidence-based practice (EBP). Nevertheless, EBP use by practitioners can be questioned. OBJECTIVES: The objective of this study was to explore Belgian French-speaking SLTs' information behaviour and their awareness of EBP. The collected data allow one to determine how far they have embraced this approach. METHODS: The two Belgian French-speaking SLT professional associations promoted an online questionnaire survey by email. Additionally, clinical supervisors of students were asked to participate. Information-seeking experiences during genetic testing and counseling: a qualitative study of patients at high risk for hereditary breast cancer.

BACKGROUND: Genetic testing and counseling have become increasingly prevalent in breast cancer treatment with the advancement of precision oncology. Understanding patients' information-seeking experiences is essential for providing better genetic cancer services. However, these experiences are insufficiently understood. This qualitative study explored the information-seeking experiences during genetic testing and counseling of patients at high risk for hereditary breast cancer. METHODS: Four focus group interviews were conducted with 17 breast cancer patients who had undergone genetic testing

Testing General Versus Specific Behavioral Focus in Messaging for the Promotion of Sun Protection Behaviors.

BACKGROUND: Recommendations for skin cancer prevention include behaviors such as using sunscreen, seeking shade, and wearing a shirt with sleeves, but the best way to persuasively communicate this information to the public is not clear. PURPOSE: To test whether a messaging strategy using videos that focus on one specific behavior at a time versus a more general or multibehavior sun protection message is effective at changing attitudinal beliefs and intention with regard to sun protection behaviors. METHODS: Online experiment among non-Hispanic white 18-49 year old adults in the USA. Particip

Anterior Cingulate Cortex and the Control of Dynamic Behavior in Primates.

The brain mechanism for controlling continuous behavior in dynamic contexts must mediate action selection and learning across many timescales, responding differentially to the level of environmental uncertainty and volatility. In this review, we argue that a part of the frontal cortex known as the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) is particularly well suited for this function. First, the ACC is interconnected with prefrontal, parietal, and subcortical regions involved in valuation and action selection. Second, the ACC integrates diverse, behaviorally relevant information across multiple timescal

Is cyberchondria a new transdiagnostic digital compulsive syndrome? A systematic review of the evidence.

BACKGROUND: Cyberchondria (CYB) has been described relatively recently as a behaviour characterized by excessive online searching for medical information that is associated with increasing levels of health anxiety. Although CYB has received some attention from researchers, there is no consensus about many of its aspects. AIMS: We describe one of the first reported cases of a treatment-seeking patient with CYB. We review the published literature on the definition of CYB, its assessment, epidemiology, cost and burden, psychological models and mechanisms associated with CYB, relationships betwee

Helpful or harmful? How cancer beliefs and information seeking relate to depression in U.S. adults.

This study examined how cancer-related beliefs, information-seeking behaviors, and discussions about health with family or friends relate to depressive symptoms (PHQ-2 ≥ 3) among U.S. adults, using data from the 2024 Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS 7; unweighted N = 6,826). Associations were estimated using survey-weighted logistic regression with jackknife replicate weights, adjusting for sociodemographic factors and personal or family cancer history; results are reported as adjusted odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs). Weighted estimates indicate that appro

Dopamine modulates risk-taking as a function of baseline sensation-seeking trait.

Trait sensation-seeking, defined as a need for varied, complex, and intense sensations, represents a relatively underexplored hedonic drive in human behavioral neuroscience research. It is related to increased risk for a range of behaviors including substance use, gambling, and risky sexual practice. Individual differences in self-reported sensation-seeking have been linked to brain dopamine function, particularly at D2-like receptors, but so far no causal evidence exists for a role of dopamine in sensation-seeking behavior in humans. Here, we investigated the effects of the selective D2/D3 ag

Help-Seeking Behavior of Adults with Adverse Childhood Experiences in Rural China.

Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs), which encompass a broad range of adverse events during childhood, are prevalent in rural China. However, help-seeking among adults with ACEs remains limited and underexplored. This study aims to examine the barriers to help-seeking behaviors among adults with ACEs in rural China. Qualitative interviews were conducted with 20 adults affected by ACEs in rural mainland China between October 2024 and December 2024. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews in Mandarin, and transcripts were analyzed using the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) framew

Behavioral Addiction from the Asian Americans Perspective: Exploration of Public and Help-Seeking Stigma.

Asian Americans have been unlikely to seek mental health services despite their needs for treatment, particularly when experiencing significant gambling or Internet gaming problems. Stigma is often considered to be a barrier to seeking help. To understand how stigma impacts Asian Americans' willingness to seek mental health services, the present study used an online survey to investigate the public stigma associated with addictive behaviors and help-seeking stigma among Asian Americans. Participants (N = 431) who self-identified as Asian American, reside in the US. Using a between-groups vigne

Beta-Blocker Propranolol Modulates Decision Urgency During Sequential Information Gathering.

Arbitrating between timely choice and extended information gathering is critical for effective decision making. Aberrant information gathering behavior is thought to be a feature of psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia and obsessive-compulsive disorder, but we know little about the underlying neurocognitive control mechanisms. In a double-blind, placebo-controlled drug study involving 60 healthy human subjects (30 female), we examined the effects of noradrenaline and dopamine antagonism on information gathering during performance of an information sampling task. We show that modulating
