Ophthalmic Manifestations of Hodgkin Lymphoma: A Review.

BACKGROUND: Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) is a hematopoietic neoplasm characterized by cancerous Reed-Sternberg cells. In contrast to ophthalmic manifestations by non-HL that are well recognized, there is paucity of the literature as it relates to ophthalmic manifestation by HL. We performed a comprehensive review of published studies (case reports and small case series) to characterize the ophthalmic manifestations of HL. SUMMARY: Thirty patients were identified with ophthalmic manifestation of HL. Thirteen (43%) were male, and 14 (46%) were female (in 3 cases, sex was not specified). The median age

Bilateral mantle cell lymphoma of the ciliary body that responded to a combined local radiotherapy and chemotherapy regimen: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is a rare, aggressive B-cell non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) that often affects men over the age of 60. Systemic metastasis of MCL to eyes is rare and intraocular involvement is even rarer, which usually affects the choroid and iris. To the best of our knowledge, ciliary body metastasis of systemic MCL has not been reported. CASE PRESENTATION: A 59-year-old Han Chinese male with past-history of systemic MCL complained of redness, pain and blurred vision in the left eye. Ocular examination revealed a normal appearance in the right eye, and conjunctival injecti

How we treat primary central nervous system lymphoma.

Primary diffuse large B-cell (DLBCL) lymphoma of the central nervous system (CNS) (PCNSL) is a new lymphoma entity, recognized by the 2017 WHO classification of hematopoietic and lymphoid tumors. Unlike systemic DLBCL, the use of anthracycline-based chemotherapy combinations is associated with disappointing outcomes, due to low CNS bioavailability of related drugs. Therefore, international researchers investigated alternative strategies, mostly including drugs able to cross the blood-brain-barrier at low or high doses, with a progressive improvement in survival. Some effective chemotherapy com

Inhibition of multiple pathogenic pathways by histone deacetylase inhibitor SAHA in a corneal alkali-burn injury model.

Neovascularization (NV) in the cornea is a major cause of vision impairment and corneal blindness. Hemangiogenesis and lymphangiogenesis induced by inflammation underlie the pathogenesis of corneal NV. The current mainstay treatment, corticosteroid, treats the inflammation associated with corneal NV, but is not satisfactory due to such side effects as cataract and the increase in intraocular pressure. It is imperative to develop a novel therapy that specifically targets the hemangiogenesis, lymphangiogenesis, and inflammation pathways underlying corneal NV. Histone deacetylase inhibitors (HDAC

HTLV-I uveitis.

Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) is known to cause adult T-cell leukemia/T-cell lymphoma and tropical spastic paraparesis/HTLV-I-associated myelopathy. Recent seroepidemiologic, clinical, and virologic studies indicate that the virus is also related to a certain type of uveitis, which has been classified as uveitis without defined etiologies or idiopathic uveitis. According to the seroepidemiologic survey, the seroprevalence of HTLV-I in patients with idiopathic uveitis was significantly higher than that of two control groups, that is, patients with uveitis with defined etiologi

Coexisting and Second Primary Cancers in Patients with Uveal Melanoma: A 10-Year Nationwide Database Analysis.

Uveal melanoma is the most common intraocular tumor in adults. Metastatic disease occurs in about 30% of patients, for which there is currently no effective treatment. More than half of patients are long-term survivors, and it is well established that cancer survivors are prone to developing second primary cancers. In this study, we analyzed 10 years' worth of data from the nationwide database to determine the rates of coexisting malignancies and second primary cancers associated with uveal melanoma. The mean annual incidence of uveal melanoma was 1.1 per million. Approximately 43% of patients

Uveitis in children.

Uveitis is diagnosed more often in adults than in children but in children the prevalence of chronic inflammation and the difficulty of an early diagnosis may worsen the visual prognosis. The different incidence of the presumed or defined etiologies in the various ages is probably responsible for the better classification of uveitis in childhood (71% versus 55% in adult patients). Juvenile rheumatoid arthritis is the most common identifiable etiology of pediatric anterior uveitis (28%). However, its long-term prognosis is not satisfactory and ophthalmic surveillance protocols are necessary esp

Exosome-Based Approaches in Regenerative Medicine and Targeted Therapy for Eye Malignancies: A Comprehensive Review.

Diagnosing and treating ocular malignancies-such as uveal melanoma, retinoblastoma, intraocular lymphoma, and conjunctival tumors-can be very difficult given their rarity, complicated pathophysiology, and a high potential for complications that threaten vision or life. Traditional treatments such as chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery result in limited clinical value because of systemic toxicity, versatile drug resistance, and insufficient local control. Exosomes (EXOs)-naturally occurring nanoscale vesicles held in biocompatible structures-represent a uniquely advantageous platform for targe

Case Report: A Peculiar Pinguecula? A Surprising IgG4-Related Conjunctival Lesion.

INTRODUCTION: IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) is a chronic immune-mediated fibroinflammatory condition that may involve multiple organs but rarely presents as an isolated conjunctival lesion. Ocular surface involvement can mimic benign inflammatory conditions, leading to diagnostic delay. We report a rare case of isolated conjunctival IgG4-RD initially misdiagnosed as recurrent pingueculitis. CASE PRESENTATION: A 37-year-old female presented with a gelatinous, cystic mass on the bulbar conjunctiva. Comprehensive ophthalmic examination and anterior segment optical coherence tomography (OCT) rev

Human U90926 orthologous long non-coding RNA as a novel biomarker for visual prognosis in herpes simplex virus type-1 induced acute retinal necrosis.

Acute retinal necrosis (ARN) is a form of infectious uveitis caused by alpha herpesviruses, including herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1). We previously found that the long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) U90926 is upregulated in murine retinal photoreceptor cells following HSV-1 infection, leading to host cell death. However, to date, an orthologous transcript has not been identified in humans. We investigated U90926 orthologous transcript in humans and examined its utility as a prognostic marker for visual acuity in patients with ARN. We identified two human orthologous transcripts (1955 and 592 bas

Analysis of inflammatory mediators in the vitreous humor of eyes with pan-uveitis according to aetiological classification.

Treatment of uveitis is complicated because of its multiple aetiologies and elevation of various inflammatory mediators. To determine the mediators that are elevated in the vitreous humor according to the aetiology of the uveitis, we examined the concentrations of 21 inflammatory cytokines, 7 chemokines, and 5 colony-stimulating/growth factors in vitreous samples from 57 eyes with uveitis associated with intraocular lymphoma (IOL, n = 13), sarcoidosis (n = 15), acute retinal necrosis (ARN, n = 13), or bacterial endophthalmitis (BE, n = 16). Samples from eyes with idiopathic epiretinal membrane
