Seasonal Effects on Corneal Densitometry and Haze After Mitomycin C-Assisted Photorefractive Keratectomy.

Purpose: To investigate whether the season in which photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) with mitomycin C (MMC) is performed influences postoperative corneal transparency considering seasonal variations in ultraviolet (UV) exposure. Methods: This retrospective study included 100 eyes of 50 patients who underwent MMC-assisted PRK for myopic refractive error. Patients were divided into two groups based on the season of surgery: winter (November-April, low UV exposure) and summer (May-October, high UV exposure). All patients were evaluated preoperatively and at 12 months postoperatively. Corneal tra

Corneal ectasia following photorefractive keratectomy: a confocal microscopic case report and literature review.

The occurrence of corneal ectasia after photorefractive keratectomy is a rare but serious complication of refractive surgery. Possible risk factors are not well assessed, but a probable reason is the failure to detect keratoconus preoperatively. In this report, we describe a case of corneal ectasia after photorefractive keratectomy in a patient who presented a suspicious tomography pattern preoperatively but had no degenerative alterations associated with pathologic keratoconus, as revealed by in vivo corneal confocal microscopy. We also review eligible case reports of post-photorefractive ker

Refractive Corneal Lenticule Extraction on Previous Photorefractive Keratectomy, with Optical Coherence Tomography Study.

We report the first case of refractive corneal lenticule extraction with the femtosecond laser application CLEAR as retreatment technique after previous laser vision correction. A 42-year-old woman, operated by bilateral photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) 19 years previously, with moderate dry eye, came for post-PRK regression and underwent correction of a residual myopia of -3 -0.5 × 159° D in the left eye by CLEAR. Surgery was uneventful, with a regular laser pattern and a normal dissection of the lenticule. At day 1, uncorrected visual acuity was 20/25; at 3 months, it was 20/20, with a refr

Keratoconus and corneal stability after radial keratectomy in the fellow eye: case report.

Keratoconus has usually been described as bilateral but asymmetric disease. Corneal ectasia is one of the long-term complications of modern refractive surgery, especially those submitted to laser in situ keratomileusis (LASIK). We describe a patient with keratoconus in the right eye that was submitted to radial keratectomy (RK) in the left eye 19 years ago with no progression of the ectatic cornea and no complications related to the refractive surgery. Because unilateral keratoconus is rare, we believe that RK was performed on an already ectatic cornea (not clinically detected) or with fruste

A comparison between Goldmann applanation tonometry and dynamic contour tonometry after photorefractive keratectomy.

BACKGROUND: The intraocular pressure (IOP) could be measured by both Goldmann applanation tonometry (GAT) and dynamic contour tonometry (DCT). Although these two methods have been discussed widely after laser-assisted sub-epithelial keratectomy (LASIK), there is little data in the cases undergoing photorefractive keratectomy (PRK). We aimed to compare the changes of IOP measurements obtained by GAT and DCT after PRK for myopia/myopic astigmatism. METHODS: This prospective study enrolled 77 candidates (154 eyes) for PRK to correct myopia or myopic astigmatism and 30 matched patients (30 eyes)
