Contrasting fate and GHG emissions of algal vs. manure DOM under light and microbes in lakes.

The escalating dissolved organic matter (DOM) inputs from algal (ADOM) and livestock manure (MDOM) sources are altering lake ecosystems, yet their fate under light and microbes in steppe lakes is unclear. Using microcosms, we found that photodegradation suppressed ADOM bioavailability by 4.8% via substrate competition and reactive oxygen species (ROS) inhibition (especially singlet oxygen), while light enhanced MDOM bioavailability by 5.4%. ADOM mineralization released 1.6× more CO2 than MDOM. Multi-group structural equation modeling (SEM) indicated that efficient ADOM microbial transformation

Viral community assembly during cyanobacterial blooms reveals ecosystem-specific regulation and nutrient cycling in freshwater lakes.

Cyanobacterial blooms pose escalating threats to freshwater ecosystems and public health, yet the ecological roles of viral communities in bloom development, succession and toxin dynamics remain poorly understood. We characterized bacterial and viral community dynamics during bloom seasons in two chronically affected lakes with contrasting ecological properties: Lake Erie, a large Great Lake, and Buckeye Lake, a shallow inland reservoir. Buckeye Lake exhibited substantially higher bloom severity, with fivefold higher microcystin concentrations (mean 24.40 vs. 5.30 μg L-¹), all samples exceedin

Seasonal shifts in mercury speciation and relative methylation potential in cold-arid seasonally ice-covered lakes.

Approximately 50% of global lakes experience seasonal ice cover for an average of 217.5 days per year, a period that has traditionally been regarded as an ecological "dormant phase". During this period, lake ice regulates light availability, thermal structure, gas exchange, redox conditions, and hydrodynamic processes, all of which can influence mercury (Hg) speciation, transport, and transformation. However, most Hg biogeochemistry studies have focused on the open-water period, leaving Hg cycling during the ice-covered period insufficiently understood. To address this knowledge gap, six repre

Optimizing a long-term monitoring strategy to track emerging cyanobacterial blooms in a Great Lakes estuary.

Cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (cHABs) are increasingly frequent and severe globally. Recently, the St. Louis River Estuary (SLRE) has experienced numerous cHABs, but the locations, timing, and environmental conditions associated with them are unknown. We first investigated environmental predictors of cyanobacteria through a multifaceted approach, highlighting key relationships to understand past cHABs, and then performed a detailed spatiotemporal redundancy analysis of sampling data to optimize site selection and sampling frequency for future monitoring. We employed an oversampling appro

Biosignature Preservation in Stromatolites From the Carri Laufquen Lakes System, Patagonia: Implications for Martian Palaeolacustrine Environments.

The Carri Laufquen Lakes System is a highly alkaline, basalt-hosted lacustrine environment in northern Patagonia, Argentina. Diverse morphologies of Late Pleistocene sub-fossil stromatolites occur along the lakeshores. Using detailed optical and electron microscopy, spectroscopy and organic geochemical analyses, this study shows that stromatolite growth and early diagenetic processes were strongly influenced by microbially controlled organomineralisation. Mineralisation of extracellular polymeric substances and cyanobacterial sheaths promoted early lithification and exceptional preservation of

Microplastic pollution in urban drainage systems discharging into the alpine lakes of Como and Lugano, Italy.

Urban stormwater outfalls and combined sewer overflows (CSOs) represent major sources of MPs pollution in receiving water bodies. This study presents an experimental and numerical investigation on MPs pollution from combined sewerage systems and wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) discharging into two alpine lakes in northern Italy. Spatial and temporal trends of MPs concentrations and loads are investigated in the sewerage under dry-weather conditions and during representative rainfall events in the period September 2022-January 2023. The study allows the identification of key factors which c

Spatial heterogeneity of antibiotic pollution in chinese lakes: A nationwide study with emphasis on arid zones.

Although most previous studies have illustrated the fate of antibiotics in specific lakes, little is known about their distribution from a nationwide scale due to the insufficient knowledge in arid zones, not even to mention declaring the possible impacts driven by both the climate change and anthropogenic activities. To fill this gap, we selected several typical lakes located in arid region of northwestern China-Xinjiang to assess the occurrence and risks of antibiotics in water and sediment, and then to identity the possible influences of parameters focusing on climate change and anthropogen

Intracervical lakes as a novel sonographic potential marker for placenta accreta spectrum: a prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Placenta accreta spectrum (PAS) is a major cause of obstetric hemorrhage and maternal morbidity. Accurate antenatal prediction is vital for surgical planning. Conventional ultrasound markers such as placental lacunae and myometrial thinning have limited specificity. Novel markers, including intracervical lakes (ICL) and absence of the cleavage line, may improve diagnostic accuracy. METHODS: A prospective observational study was conducted at Minia University Maternity Hospital (March 2024-February 2025). A total of 150 women with placenta previa were enrolled and classified by intr

Dragonfly larvae as biosentinels of Hg bioaccumulation in Northeastern and Adirondack lakes: relationships to abiotic factors.

Mercury (Hg) is a toxic pollutant, widespread in northeastern US ecosystems. Resource managers' efforts to develop fish consumption advisories for humans and to focus conservation efforts for fish-eating wildlife are hampered by spatial variability. Dragonfly larvae can serve as biosentinels for Hg given that they are widespread in freshwaters, long-lived, exhibit site fidelity, and bioaccumulate relatively high mercury concentrations, mostly as methylmercury (88% ± 11% MeHg in this study). We sampled lake water and dragonfly larvae in 74 northeastern US lakes that are part of the US EPA Long-

Biomonitoring programs in Michigan, Minnesota and New York to assess human exposure to Great Lakes contaminants.

Over the past century, industrialization and urban practices have resulted in the contamination of the Great Lakes ecosystem-the world's largest surface freshwater system-that provides drinking water and recreation to more than 40 million residents. In 2010, the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative was launched to accelerate efforts to protect and restore the Great Lakes and surrounding areas. Funded by GLRI, the Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry initiated the Biomonitoring of Great Lakes Populations (BGLP) program. The objective of the program is to assess human exposure to legac

Cyanobacterial Toxins of the Laurentian Great Lakes, Their Toxicological Effects, and Numerical Limits in Drinking Water.

Cyanobacteria are ubiquitous phototrophic bacteria that inhabit diverse environments across the planet. Seasonally, they dominate many eutrophic lakes impacted by excess nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) forming dense accumulations of biomass known as cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms or cyanoHABs. Their dominance in eutrophic lakes is attributed to a variety of unique adaptations including N and P concentrating mechanisms, N₂ fixation, colony formation that inhibits predation, vertical movement via gas vesicles, and the production of toxic or otherwise bioactive molecules. While some of these

Methylmercury and Total Mercury in Eels, Anguilla anguilla, from Lakes in Northeastern Poland: Health Risk Assessment.

In the aquatic environment, mercury is readily methylated into its most toxic form of methylmercury. In this form, it enters the aquatic food chain and its concentrations increase in subsequent links, which decreases the quality of fish meat and poses risks to consumer health. Concentrations of methylmercury (MeHg) and total mercury (THg) were determined in the muscle tissues of 64 eel specimens measuring from 59 to 95 cm in length as functions of specimen size and weight. Risks posed to consumers by eel from different length classes were also assessed. The mean concentration of THg in all of

Seasonal and year-to-year variation of mercury concentration in perch (Perca fluviatilis) in boreal lakes.

The authors examined the seasonal and year-to-year variations of mercury (Hg) concentrations in populations of perch (Perca fluviatilis) from 2 boreal freshwater lakes in southeast Norway. Fish Hg concentrations were determined seasonally (spring, summer, and autumn) over 3 yr (2010, 2011, and 2012) to test the hypothesis that there are substantial changes in fish Hg concentrations during the year (seasonal variation) as well as annually. Concentrations were significantly (p < 0.0001) different in the 2 study lakes, with mean seasonal concentrations varying from 0.24 mg/kg to 0.36 mg/kg and fr

Climate induced thermocline change has an effect on the methyl mercury cycle in small boreal lakes.

We conducted a whole-lake experiment by manipulating the stratification pattern (thermocline depth) of a small polyhumic, boreal lake (Halsjärvi) in southern Finland and studying the impacts on lake mercury chemistry. The experimental lake was compared to a nearby reference site (Valkea-Kotinen Lake). During the first phase of the experiment the thermocline of Halsjärvi was lowered in order to simulate the estimated increase in wind speed and in total lake heat content (high-change climate scenario). The rate of methyl mercury (MeHg) production during summer stagnation (May-August) was calcula

Metamorphosis in chironomids, more than mercury supply, controls methylmercury transfer to fish in High Arctic lakes.

Lake-dwelling Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus) are monitored internationally as a sentinel species for effects of atmospheric mercury deposition on Arctic fresh waters. We investigated the control of mercury supply and biological processes on the methylmercury (MeHg) content of their main food, aquatic chironomids, in 22 lakes and ponds in the Canadian High Arctic. Total mercury (THg) concentrations in sediment (corrected for organic matter content) increased with drainage basin size, suggesting a gradient in mercury loading among study sites. MeHg concentrations in sediment and water were low

Total mercury and methylmercury accumulation in periphyton of Boreal Shield lakes: influence of watershed physiographic characteristics.

Little is known about Hg accumulation in littoral communities, especially in periphyton biofilm of unperturbed lakes. The objectives of this study were to investigate and establish relationships between total mercury (THg) and methylmercury (MeHg) concentrations in periphyton communities of Boreal lakes and watershed physiographic and lake morphometric characteristics. This study was carried out on 23 Boreal Canadian Shield lakes located between 47-50 degrees N and 73-77 degrees W. Periphyton was sampled on rocks, the dominant periphyton substrate in the littoral zone of these lakes. Periphyto
