Usefulness of the Bayley scales of infant and toddler development, third edition, in the early diagnosis of language disorder.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the common causes of total serum prostate-specific antigen (PSA) values of> 10 ng/mL in an Arab population, as in the USA and Europe the risk of prostate cancer is considered high in men with such PSA levels. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Serum total PSA was measured in men presenting to our hospital as part of the investigation for prostate cancer screening and/or in elderly men with prostatism. Men with a serum PSA level of> 10 ng/mL were further investigated by transrectal ultrasonography (TRUS) of the prostate and biopsy of suspicious lesions for histological diagnosis.

Clarifying the associations between language and social development in autism: a study of non-native phoneme recognition.

Autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) are characterized by correlated deficiencies in social and language development. This study explored a fundamental aspect of auditory information processing (AIP) that is dependent on social experience and critical to early language development: the ability to compartmentalize close-sounding speech sounds into singular phonemes. We examined this ability by assessing whether close-sounding non-native language phonemes were more likely to be perceived as disparate sounds by school-aged children with high-functioning ASD (n = 27), than by unaffected control subjec

Clinical characteristics of children referred to a child development center for evaluation of speech, language, and communication disorders.

Speech, language, and communication disorders are prominent reasons for referrals to a child development center. From 1984 to 1988, 1,090 preschool children were referred to our child development center, which serves the Tel Aviv metropolitan area. Of all referrals, 432 (41%) were primarily due to speech, language, and communication problems. After exclusion of those with IQ < 50 and those with non-language-related disabilities, 323 children remained. The children were classified into different subtypes of developmental language disorders and autistic spectrum disorders. The main developmental

Development of retrieval-augmented generation-based large language model for drug-induced liver injury using Livertox data.

BACKGROUND: Idiosyncratic DILI is a complex clinical challenge requiring timely and accurate decision support. LiverTox, curated by the National Institute of Health (NIH), offers a comprehensive DILI evidence base, but its encyclopedia-like format hinders point-of-care use. Health care providers increasingly use general large language models (LLMs) for clinical care, raising safety concerns due to LLM hallucinations or misinformation. We hypothesize that retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) integration-grounding LLM responses in LiverTox content-would enable accurate DILI decision support. ME

Algorithmic Classification of Psychiatric Disorder-Related Spontaneous Communication Using Large Language Model Embeddings: Algorithm Development and Validation.

BACKGROUND: Language, which is a crucial element of human communication, is influenced by the complex interplay between thoughts, emotions, and experiences. Psychiatric disorders have an impact on cognitive and emotional processes, which in turn affect the content and way individuals with these disorders communicate using language. The recent rapid advancements in large language models (LLMs) suggest that leveraging them for quantitative analysis of language usage has the potential to become a useful method for providing objective measures in diagnosing and monitoring psychiatric conditions by

Rapid Increases in Children's Spontaneous and Responsive Speech Vocalizations Following Cochlear Implantation: Implications for Spoken Language Development.

OBJECTIVES: Cochlear implants are the most effective means to provide access to spoken language models for children with severe to profound deafness. In typical development, spoken language emerges gradually as children vocally explore and interact with caregivers. But it is unclear how early vocal activity unfolds after children gain access to auditory signals, and thus spoken language, via cochlear implants, and how this early vocal exploration predicts children's spoken language development. This longitudinal study investigated how two formative aspects of early language-child speech produc

Language Models for Multilabel Document Classification of Surgical Concepts in Exploratory Laparotomy Operative Notes: Algorithm Development Study.

BACKGROUND: Operative notes are frequently mined for surgical concepts in clinical care, research, quality improvement, and billing, often requiring hours of manual extraction. These notes are typically analyzed at the document level to determine the presence or absence of specific procedures or findings (eg, whether a hand-sewn anastomosis was performed or contamination occurred). Extracting several binary classification labels simultaneously is a multilabel classification problem. Traditional natural language processing approaches-bag-of-words (BoW) and term frequency-inverse document freque

Neonatal Brain Microstructure and Machine-Learning-Based Prediction of Early Language Development in Children Born Very Preterm.

BACKGROUND: Very-low-birth-weight preterm infants have a higher rate of language impairments compared with children born full term. Early identification of preterm infants at risk for language delay is essential to guide early intervention at the time of optimal neuroplasticity. This study examined near-term structural brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and white matter microstructure assessed on diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) in relation to early language development in children born very preterm. METHODS: A total of 102 very-low-birth-weight neonates (birthweight≤1500g, gestational age

Synthetic Content Validation of Pediatric Trust Instruments Using Persona-Driven Large Language Models: Development and Evaluation Study.

BACKGROUND: Large language models (LLMs) could assist in streamlining health care instrument validation. This is particularly relevant as traditional instrument development is time-intensive and resource-intensive. Currently, there is a significant gap in specifically developed and validated trust instruments for pediatric emergency and surgical contexts. Such tools are key because trust is foundational to the patient family-physician relationship and is associated with improved care-seeking and treatment adherence. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed (1) to develop new trust instruments and conduct

Associations between literacy-related family routines and children's language development: A three-wave longitudinal study in Taiwan.

Family routines play a vital role in children's language and literacy development. However, limited research has examined how specific literacy-related family routines contribute to children's developmental trajectories and whether these associations are bidirectional over time. This longitudinal study investigated the potential reciprocal associations between specific literacy-related family routines and language development among 1,959 children in Taiwan over 3 years from age 3. Utilizing regularized structural equation modeling and reciprocal cross-lagged panel models, the findings revealed
