This article focuses on the regulatory issues to consider when veterinarians are called upon to treat animal toxicoses, in particular those involving food-producing animals. The lack of Food and Drug Administration-approved drugs to treat animal toxicoses has been a long-standing problem. This article reviews extralabel drug use regulations, and the responsibilities of the treating veterinarian. It discusses the legal implications of compounding and the use of unapproved drugs to treat animal toxicoses. Efforts should be made to increase the availability of life-saving antidotal therapies.

Research in Papua New Guinea and elsewhere in the developing world has indicted the dangers of bottle feeding infants. Following a failure to obtain the voluntary agreement of shopkeepers to restrict sales of infant-feeding bottles and teats, legislation was passed which placed these items on prescription. In order to obtain a prescription certain conditions have to be satisfied. A follow-up survey which was carried out in Port Moresby two years after the introduction of legislation indicated a significant decline in the extent of bottle feeding.

BACKGROUND: The escalating burden of diet-related non-communicable diseases in Ghana has prompted the government to implement a 20% excise tax on sugar-sweetened beverages through the Excise Duty (Amendment) Act 1108 of 2023. While fiscal measures have garnered significant advocacy, public health experts emphasize the need for a "double-duty" policy bundle, including food marketing restrictions, front-of-pack warning labeling, and public food procurement policies. The problem is that public support for this broader bundle remains understudied in urban Ghana, risking implementation failure.

BACKGROUND: In 2006 the Food Safety Authority of Ireland recommended mandatory folic acid fortification of flour for the prevention of neural tube defects in addition to the existing extensive voluntary folic acid fortification culture in place there.
