Preparation of High-Toughness Lignin Phenolic Resin Biomaterials Based via Polybutylene Succinate Molecular Intercalation.

Lignin has many potential applications and is a biopolymer with a three-dimensional network structure. It is composed of three phenylpropane units, p-hydroxyphenyl, guaiacyl, and syringyl, connected by ether bonds and carbon-carbon bonds, and it contains a large number of phenol or aldehyde structural units, resulting in complex lignin structures. This limits the application of lignin. To expand the application range of lignin, we prepared lignin thermoplastic phenolic resins (LPRs) by using lignin instead of phenol; these LPRs had molecular weights of up to 1917 g/mol, a molecular weight dist

An optimum biomass fractionation strategy into maximum carbohydrates conversion and lignin valorization from poplar.

Appropriate fractionation of lignocellulosic biomass into useable forms is a key challenge to achieving an economic bioethanol production. In the present study, four different fractionation strategies of hydrothermal-, NaOH-, ethanol-, and NaOH catalyzed ethanol pretreatment were investigated to compare their abilities of cellulose conversion. Results showed that NaOH catalyzed ethanol pretreatment showed a rather high extent of delignification of 85.92%, which also enhanced the retention of cellulose (92.56%) and hemicellulose (76.57%); while other pretreatments tended to produce cellulose fr

Discovery of lignin-transforming bacteria and enzymes in thermophilic environments using stable isotope probing.

Characterizing microorganisms and enzymes involved in lignin biodegradation in thermal ecosystems can identify thermostable biocatalysts. We integrated stable isotope probing (SIP), genome-resolved metagenomics, and enzyme characterization to investigate the degradation of high-molecular weight, 13C-ring-labeled synthetic lignin by microbial communities from moderately thermophilic hot spring sediment (52 °C) and a woody "hog fuel" pile (53 and 62 °C zones). 13C-Lignin degradation was monitored using IR-GCMS of 13CO2, and isotopic enrichment of DNA was measured with UHLPC-MS/MS. Degradation of cotton stalk lignin by carbon dots loaded copper oxide synergistic emulsion system.

Based on the realization of efficient utilization of cotton stalk lignin, the degradation of cotton stalk lignin by a CDs/CuO synergistic emulsion system was investigated. Copper oxide (CuO) nanoparticles with monoclinic crystal structure were prepared and carbon dots (CDs) synthesized by microwave method was combined with CuO. Under visible light, water and n-butanol were used to construct a water-oil (W/O) emulsion reaction system to achieved depolymerisation of lignin into small molecule compounds. The involvement of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) makes the degradation of lignin in this system ev

Characterization of lignin streams during ionic liquid/hydrochloric acid/formaldehyde pretreatment of corn stalk.

This work investigated the role of formaldehyde (FA) in lignin anti-condensation during corn stalk pretreatment based on 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride ([C4C1im]Cl)/hydrochloric acid (HCl). As a result of the aldolization reactions between FA and lignin, the condensation of lignin fragments was inhibited, and lignin remained in soluble fragmental molecules. Characterizations on the compositional and structural changes of lignin and its degraded products during pretreatment (80 °C-100 °C, 2-5 h) with FA addition in comparison with those in DO/HCl/FA or [C4C1im]Cl/HCl were conducted. Formaldehyde-free self-polymerization of lignin-derived monomers for synthesis of renewable phenolic resin.

Most phenolic resins are synthesized with non-renewable petroleum-based phenol and formaldehyde, which have adverse effects on the environment and human health. To achieve green and sustainable production of phenolic resins, it is important to replace non-renewable toxic phenol and formaldehyde. Herein, a new strategy was proposed to completely replace phenol and formaldehyde, using lignin-derived monomers to synthesize renewable phenolic resins. Lithium aluminum hydride was utilized to reduce lignin-derived monomers, including vanillin, methyl vanillate, and syringaldehyde, to generate the co

Implantable and degradable antioxidant poly(ε-caprolactone)-lignin nanofiber membrane for effective osteoarthritis treatment.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is one of the most common musculoskeletal disorders worldwide. Oxidative stress initiated by excessive free radicals such as reactive oxygen species (ROS) is a leading cause of cartilage degradation and OA. However, conventional injection or oral intake of antioxidants usually cannot provide effective treatment due to rapid clearance and degradation or low bioavailability. Here, a new strategy is proposed based on nanofibers made of poly (ε-caprolactone) (PCL) and PCL-grafted lignin (PCL-g-lignin) copolymer. Lignin offers intrinsic antioxidant activity while PCL tailors the

Functionalization of graphene oxide with cinnamic acid and lignin for enhanced pesticides adsorption for water purification.

Pest control in modern agronomy leads to systematic pesticide usage that influences the water ecosystem and can lead to mutagenic and chronic diseases of diversity, emphasizing the growing demand for the creation of efficient adsorbents with the possibility of regeneration. That's why we herein report the application of the obtained graphene oxide-cinnamic acid and graphene oxide-lignin hybrid systems for water purification from pesticides. For this purpose, biodegradable polymer lignin (by-product of the pulp industry) and its phenolic structural precursor - cinnamic acid have been functional

Impact of lignin depolymerization on aerobic and anaerobic bioconversion of alkaline liquor from sugarcane bagasse.

INTRODUCTION: Lignin recalcitrance, together with its complex interactions with cellulose and hemicelluloses within the plant cell wall, remains a major barrier to efficient lignocellulosic biomass valorization. Mild alkaline pretreatment partially addresses this challenge by solubilizing lignin and acetate into a lignin-rich alkaline liquor (AL). However, the recovered lignin is largely oligomeric, limiting its direct microbial conversion. METHODS: To evaluate strategies for improving AL bioconversion, alkaline liquor was subjected to thermochemical depolymerization under different severitie

Biomedical applications of lignin nanoparticles and their nanoconjugates: Advancements in synthesis, therapy, imaging, and drug delivery.

Multidrug resistance (MDR) in cancer and infectious diseases is a major global challenge. It reduces the effectiveness of antibiotics and chemotherapeutics, leading to higher treatment costs and mortality. Conventional agents suffer from poor selectivity, systemic toxicity, and resistance linked to efflux pump overexpression. This review addresses how lignin nanoparticles (LNPs) and their nanoconjugates can provide relatively sustainable, biocompatible alternatives to overcome MDR through tunable surface chemistry, stimuli responsiveness, and multifunctionality. Developments in LNP synthesis u

Visualizing Structure-Dependent Nanoscale Morphologies of Lignins in Miscible Polymer Blend Thin Films.

The lignin structure is commonly discussed using local structural descriptors obtained by NMR and related chemical analyses, whereas its nanoscale appearance under aggregation-suppressed conditions remains difficult to evaluate. In this work, we developed a polymer matrix-assisted atomic force microscopy (AFM) approach to visualize lignin-rich domains in highly dilute miscible blend thin films. Cellulolytic enzyme lignins (CELs), acetylated CELs, and dehydrogenation polymer (DHP) model lignins were dispersed in a poly(N-vinylpyrrolidone)/glycerol matrix and spin-cast on mica for AFM observatio

Screening high-quality lignins extracted from biomass to prepare biobased wood adhesives.

Practical lignin valorization strategies have the potential to enhance the profitability of lignocellulosic biorefineries. Leveraging the phenolic structure of lignin, commercially available lignins (for example, kraft, soda or biorefinery lignin) have been extensively studied as renewable substitutes for phenol in the synthesis of lignin-phenol-formaldehyde resin adhesives. However, the large-scale production and adoption of lignin-phenol-formaldehyde resin adhesives remain limited owing to challenges related to appearance, performance and cost. To address these limitations, this protocol out

A universal atomically dispersed cobalt catalyst for alkylation of ketones alcohols and lignin-derived compounds.

Catalytic carbon-carbon bond-forming reactions provide the basis for synthetic organic chemistry. To move towards a circular carbon economy, it is imperative to efficiently convert sustainable and inexpensive starting materials, e.g. broadly available renewable feedstocks, in an economically viable and practical manner. In this work , we present a method for the atom-efficient and "waste-free" construction of C-C bonds in ketones with alcohols, including lignin-derived compounds. The broad applicability of this protocol is based on the development of a novel heterogeneous cobalt-based single a

Preparation of Lignin-Based Phenolic Foam with Excellent Performance Based on Hydroxymethylation of Lignosulfonate and Paraformaldehyde.

In this paper, a novel biobased phenol formaldehyde resin foam was fabricated. Specifically, lignosulfonate, a byproduct of paper and pulping, is hydroxymethylated with paraformaldehyde and then condensed with phenol to form lignosulfonate-based phenol formaldehyde (LPF) resin, subsequently undergoing foam technology to prepare LPF foam. The structures and properties of the intermediate and target products were characterized by 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (1H NMR) spectroscopy, gel permeation chromatography (GPC), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), thermogravimetry derivative t

Iron-induced demethoxylation of lignin as an important source for methanol and its oxidation products in the environment.

Lignin, the largest reservoir of aromatic carbon in plants and soils, undergoes well-characterized biological demethylation by fungi and bacteria, and is industrially processed under harsh conditions to generate bio-based aromatics. However, the abiotic fate of lignin-derived methoxy groups under environmentally relevant conditions remains unresolved. Here, we report an iron-mediated demethoxylation mechanism involving direct aromatic C-O bond cleavage under ambient conditions. Using FeII/FeIII species and H2O2, we demonstrate the efficient release of entire methoxy groups from lignin monomers

Determination of carbohydrate and lignin content in feedstuffs for monogastric animals using near-infrared spectroscopy.

Carbohydrates (CHO) are the principal constituents of the diets given to monogastric animals around the world. They supply the largest part of the energy to the animal, despite the fact only monosaccharides, disaccharides and starch can be enzymatically broken down in the small intestine into monosaccharides that are readily absorbed. In contrast, oligosaccharides (OS), resistant starch, non-starch polysaccharides (NSP) and lignin resist enzymatic digestion and thus cannot be absorbed directly. They compose the so-called dietary fiber. The soluble fraction of fiber is almost completely ferment

Synthesis of viral-like lignin/Ag nanoparticles with spiky surfaces for antibacterial and antioxidant applications.

The components and engineered structures of nanomaterials significantly influence their properties and functionalities. Inspired by the effective interfacial interactions between natural viruses and host cells, we developed a novel virus-like lignin/silver (Ag) nanoparticle with a spiky surface designed for antibacterial and antioxidant therapies. This study comprehensively examined the antibacterial performance of these composite materials with different morphologies against E. coli and S. aureus. It is worth noting that their rough surfaces enhanced bacterial adhesion, and reduced the effect
