Hemp seeds (Cannabis sativa L.) are nutrient-dense, plant-based food ingredients. However, cultivar-related variability in its compositional profile remains insufficiently characterized for Romanian varieties. This study evaluated six Romanian monoecious hemp seed varieties (Dacia Secuieni, Secuieni Jubileu, Ratza, Zenit, Succesiv, and Olivia), for their potential food applications. The in vivo effects of fatty acids on skin barrier function were assessed by measuring: (i) transepidermal water loss (TEWL), (ii) diffusion lag times for hexyl nicotinate (HN), and (iii) irritant skin response using laser Doppler velocimetry (LDV) in combination with visual scoring. Two classes of fatty acids have been investigated: straight-chain saturated fatty acids (SFA), having 6-12 carbon atoms, and unsaturated fatty acids (UFA): oleic, linoleic, alpha-linolenic and arachidonic acids. Twenty-five commercial parrot feeds were analyzed and compared with a guideline as to the nutrient requirements of parrots. There was a large variation in the composition of the different feeds. The protein content differed from 10.4 to 20.6%. A total of 18 feeds had a low protein content and thus is only suitable for adult animals during maintenance. Bitterness limits the development of palatable foods containing bioactive ingredients. This study investigated whether long-chain fatty acids (LCFAs) modulate the human bitter taste receptor TAS2R16 using a HEK293T cell-based calcium assay with salicin as an agonist. None of the tested LCFAs directly activated TAS2R16. Under co-treatment, only oleic acid inhibited salicin-induced calcium responses, shifting the salicin EC50 from 1.82 ± 0.11 mM to 3.55 ± 1.22 mM at 30 μM (p < 0.01).
