Working Memory (WM) supports a wide range of cognitive functions, and is positively associated with academic achievement. Although fMRI studies have revealed WM networks in adults, little is known about how these networks develop to support successful WM performance in children. Using magnetoencephalography, we examined the networks underlying the maintenance of visual information in 6-year-old children. We observed an increase in mean whole-brain connectivity that was specific to the alpha frequency band during the retention interval associated with correct compared to incorrect responses. Ad

BACKGROUND: In the past decades a plethora of studies has been conducted to explore resting-state functional connectivity (RS-FC) of the brain networks in migraine with conflicting results probably due to the variability and susceptibility of signal fluctuations across the course of RS-FC scan. On the other hand, the structural substrates enabling the functional communications among the brain connectome, characterized by higher stability and reproducibility, have not been widely investigated in migraine by means of graph analysis approach. We hypothesize a rearrangement of the brain connectome

Methylphenidate is a first-line therapeutic option for treating attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD); however, elicited changes on resting-state functional networks (RSFNs) are not well understood. This study investigated the treatment effect of methylphenidate using a variety of RSFN analyses and explored the collaborative influences of treatment-relevant RSFN changes in children with ADHD. Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging was acquired from 20 medication-naïve ADHD children before methylphenidate treatment and twelve weeks later. Changes in large-scale functional

BACKGROUND: Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) is heterogeneous and overlaps with frontotemporal dementia. Spectral EEG can predict damage in structural and functional networks in frontotemporal dementia but has never been applied to ALS.
METHODS: 18 incident ALS patients with normal cognition and 17 age matched controls underwent 128 channel EEG and neuropsychology assessment. The EEG data was analyzed using FieldTrip software in MATLAB to calculate simple connectivity measures and scalp network measures. sLORETA was used in nodal analysis for source localization and same methods were appli

Benign Epilepsy with Centro-Temporal Spikes (BECTS) is a common childhood epilepsy associated with deficits in several neurocognitive domains. Neurophysiological studies in BECTS often focus on centro-temporal spikes, but these correlate poorly with morphology and cognitive impairments. To better understand the neural profile of BECTS, we studied background brain oscillations, thought to be integrally involved in neural network communication, in sensorimotor areas. We used independent component analysis of temporally correlated sources on magnetoencephalography recordings to assess sensorimoto

Milnacipran is a reuptake inhibitor of both serotonin and noradrenaline, used in the treatment of fibromyalgia with severe depression. However, few studies have been conducted on the efficacies of milnacipran drug on the functional connectivity of the neural network. The authors aimed to find the correlation between the drug efficacy and the changes in neural network in fibromyalgia patients. Resting-state-functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) were obtained before and after milnacipran drug administration. Graph theory indexes and small-worldness were calculated using preprocessed bl

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Functional imaging studies, intracranial recordings, and lesion-deficit correlations in neurological patients have produced unique insights into the cognitive mechanisms and neural substrates of face recognition. In this review, we highlight recent advances in the field and integrate data from these complementary lines of research to propose a functional neuroanatomical model of face identity recognition.
RECENT FINDINGS: Rather than being localized to a single specialized cortical region, face recognition is supported by a distributed neural network. Core components of the

OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to elucidate the network-level intrinsic functional connectivity (iFC) disruptions associated with Parkinson's disease (PD). By focusing on the iFC changes among the areas of the neurodegeneration pattern in the dementia stage of PD (PD-D) and by adopting a mass-univariate iFC analysis approach, the network-based statistics (NBS), we aimed to characterize the network-level dynamics along the steps of cognitive decline in PD with a high statistical sensitivity.
METHODS: We conducted surface-based measurements of cortical thickness in PD-D to identify the extent of n

Some aspects of human behavior and cognition depend on focal and selective cortical areas, such as the frontal eye fields or fusiform face area, while others, like semantic knowledge, are broadly distributed across the cortex. Whether higher-level cognitive functions like language can also be highly localized has been a longstanding matter of debate. Here, we provide multiple lines of evidence that receptive language in the brain is subserved by a network of discrete, focal, and uniquely language-selective areas when examining individual brains. Using precision neuroimaging, we observed highly

BACKGROUND: Robotic-assisted gait training (RAGT) has emerged as a promising strategy to promote neuroplasticity and motor recovery in individuals with spinal cord injury (SCI). This study investigates cortical connectivity during passive robotic gait compared with standing, hypothesizing greater sensor-level network connectivity during gait than during standing.
METHODS: Twenty-three individuals with incomplete SCI (ASIA C or D) underwent EEG assessments while performing standing and robotic-assisted gait tasks using the Lokomat system. Graph theory centrality metrics-degree, betweenness, an

PURPOSE: Although cognitive disorders in children with Prader-Willi syndrome (PWS) are linked to abnormalities in spontaneous neural activation and functional connectivity (FC), the specific neural activation patterns remain uncertain, especially in young children with PWS.
METHODS: The current study set out to explore specific local and global neural activation in pediatric PWS using the amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF), regional homogeneity (ReHo), and seed-based whole brain FC. Information was gathered from 35 pediatric PWS patients and 33 healthy controls (HC). Both groups'

BACKGROUND: In this study we are using source localized neurofeedback to moderate tinnitus related distress by influencing neural activity of the target region as well as the connectivity within the default network.
HYPOTHESIS: We hypothesize that up-training alpha and down-training beta and gamma activity in the posterior cingulate cortex has a moderating effect on tinnitus related distress by influencing neural activity of the target region as well as the connectivity within the default network and other functionally connected brain areas.
METHODS: Fifty-eight patients with chronic tinnitu

BACKGROUND: Previous studies on primary angle-closure glaucoma (PACG) primarily focused on local brain regions or global abnormal brain activity; however, the alteration of interhemispheric functional homotopy and its possible cause of brain-wide functional connectivity abnormalities have not been well-studied. Little is known about whether brain functional alteration could be used to differentiate from healthy controls (HCs) and its correlation with neurocognitive impairment.
METHODS: Forty patients with PACG and 40 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were recruited for this study; resting

Deep learning methods using multimodal imagings have been proposed for the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and its early stages (SMC, subjective memory complaints), which may help to slow the progression of the disease through early intervention. However, current fusion methods for multimodal imagings are generally coarse and may lead to suboptimal results through the use of shared extractors or simple downscaling stitching. Another issue with diagnosing brain diseases is that they often affect multiple areas of the brain, making it important to consider potential connections throughout

INTRODUCTION: Human mobility across the Brazilian Amazon-shaped by frontier development, land-use change, mining activity, and climatic shocks-remains a major barrier to malaria elimination. Brazil aims to eliminate Plasmodium falciparum (Pf) by 2030 and Plasmodium vivax (Pv) by 2035, yet malaria incidence has plateaued since 2020. We quantify parasite-specific mobility and assess how importations drive malaria reintroduction and reestablishment in areas approaching elimination.
METHODS: We analyzed 5,521,411 de-identified malaria cases from Sivep-Malaria (2003-2023) across 808 municipalities

In April 2024, two cases of hepatitis A (HA) were linked to the consumption of oysters produced in the same region, which triggered a multidisciplinary study. A network was quickly set up in a one-health approach including epidemiological and clinical data, as well as analysis of locally collected shellfish and wastewater samples. By the end of the outbreak, up to 17 HA cases met the case definition: all shared a same genotype IA strain and have eaten oysters. The prompt response enabled the identification of oyster samples positive for the HAV genome at the start of the monitoring period; the

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have suggested that individuals with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD) would show inefficient whole-brain communication and dysconnectivity in the fronto-parietal-subcortical sub-networks in the white matter (WM) structural network. However, these hypotheses have yet to be tested.
METHODS: Individual WM structural networks were constructed based on diffusion MRI data and deterministic tractography in 34 first-episode, medication-naïve adolescents with GAD and 27 healthy controls (HCs). Graph theory was applied to investigate the topological organization alteratio

BACKGROUND: Noncompetitive N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor antagonists are widely used as pharmacological models of schizophrenia. Their neurobiological actions are still poorly understood, although the prefrontal cortex (PFC) appears as a key target area.
METHODS: We examined the effect of phencyclidine (PCP) on neuronal activity of the mediodorsal (MD) and centromedial (CM) thalamic nuclei, reciprocally connected with the PFC, using extracellular recordings (n = 50 neurons from 35 Wistar rats) and c-fos expression.
RESULTS: Phencyclidine (.25 mg/kg intravenous [IV]) markedly disorganized the
