Malignant tumors of the mandible and maxilla.

Malignant tumors of the mandible and maxilla are grouped into primary tumors that originate within the mandible and secondary lesions, predominantly oral cancers and metastatic lesions, that involve the mandible secondarily. The most common malignant tumors of the mandible represent SCCs of the oral cavity, notably carcinoma of the floor of the mouth and gingiva that invade the mandible secondarily. Metastatic disease, most commonly from the breast and lung, are not an uncommon malignant lesion in the mandible and may be the first manifestation of a malignant lesion outside the head and neck.

Management of an extensive equine juvenile ossifying fibroma by rostral mandibulectomy and reconstruction of the mandibular symphysis using String of Pearls plates with cortical and cancellous bone autografts.

OBJECTIVE: To describe a surgical technique for rostral mandibulectomy and reconstruction of the mandibular symphysis. STUDY DESIGN: Case report. ANIMAL: One 5-month-old warmblood cross filly. METHODS: A preoperative diagnosis of a juvenile ossifying fibroma was made on the basis of clinical appearance and was later confirmed via histology. The tumor was large, rapidly growing and extending to the caudal aspect of the mandibular symphysis. Computed tomography was performed for surgical planning. The tumor was excised by performing a mandibulectomy caudal to the symphysis. The mandibular sym

Skin-analogue primary poroid neoplasms of the head and neck with YAP1/WWTR1::MAML2/NUTM1 fusions: clinicopathologic and genetic spectrum of a novel tumor family delineated in a series of 10 cases.

Porocarcinoma is a rare type of aggressive skin adnexal carcinoma with terminal sweat duct differentiation, representing the malignant counterpart of the more common benign eccrine poroma. Diagnosis is based on distinctive morphology, supplemented by immunohistochemistry. While all tumors display a squamous immunophenotype, porocarcinomas only infrequently show frankly squamous cell cytology (squamous variant). Most poromas and porocarcinomas harbor YAP1::MAML2/NUTM1 or, rarely, WWTR1::NUTM1 fusions. We herein describe 10 extra-cutaneous primary (8 salivary, 1 mandibular, 1 nasopharyngeal) por

Ewing sarcoma of the mandible mimicking an odontogenic abscess - a case report.

Ewing sarcoma (ES) of the mandible is rare and can be mistaken for inflammation of dental origin. We present a 24-year old male patient which underwent radical tumour surgery and primary reconstruction with a microvascular osteoseptocutaneous free fibular flap as well as postoperative adjuvant chemotherapy. Incomplete osseous tumour resection required a second intervention. This case report recapitulates the clinical and histopathological findings in oral ES, demonstrates its sometimes difficult diagnosis and discusses the (dis-)advantages of primary osseous reconstruction in ablative tumour s

Pathologic fractures of the mandible following invasive oral carcinomas.

Invasive and metastatic oral carcinomas can and often do result in pathologic fractures of the facial bones. Three cases of invasive oral carcinomas resulting in fractures of the mandible have been reported. It was only after multiple-view radiographs that pathologic fractures could be identified. It is mandatory that dental practitioners avail themselves of the radiographic views which assist in establishing a diagnosis. In addition, the role of the dental profession in diagnosing primary and secondary oral carcinomas cannot be overemphasized.

Sclerosing odontogenic carcinoma: A systematic review of published case reports.

BACKGROUND: Sclerosing odontogenic carcinoma is a rare and locally invasive malignant tumor of odontogenic origin. Due to its low incidence, the literature is limited to isolated case reports, making comprehensive understanding of its clinicopathologic features and management strategies challenging. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review aims to synthesize the existing case reports on SOC to elucidate its clinical, radiographic, histopathological, and immunohistochemical characteristics, and to provide insights into current diagnostic and therapeutic approaches. METHODS: A comprehensive literatur

An Unusual Histopathological Presentation of Mandibular Osteosarcoma.

Jaw osteosarcoma (JOS) is a rare, distinct variant that differ from long bone osteosarcoma (LBOS) in several aspects. JOS typically appears about twenty years later than LBOS, displays a lower propensity for metastasis to other organs, and exhibits better survival rates. The dissimilarities in clinical and biological behavior between JOS and LBOS are likely due, at least in part, to variations in their respective microenvironments. In this report, we present a case of OS affecting the mandible in a young patient. This case displayed classic radiographic features but a unique histopathological

Primary Extracranial Meningioma: A Rare Location.

Meningiomas are benign extraaxial tumors of the central nervous system (CNS). Extracranial meningiomas are extremely rare (2%) and can develop as a direct extension from a primary intracranial meningioma or as true primary extracranial meningioma originating from ectopic arachnoid cells. Only eight cases of primary meningioma in the jaw have been reported to date. Extracranial meningiomas are frequently misdiagnosed, resulting in inappropriate clinical management. The aim of this article was to describe the case of a man with an asymptomatic swelling in the right retromolar area over a period

Unicystic plexiform ameloblastoma: an insight for pediatric dentists.

Ameloblastomas have been categorized broadly into three biologic variants: cystic (unicystic), solid, and peripheral. The term plexiform unicystic ameloblastoma refers to a pattern of epithelial proliferation that has been described in cystic lesions of the jaws. Although the histology suggests that cystic ameloblastomas follow a biologically low-grade course, recent evidence suggests that they may often behave clinically as biologically aggressive tumors. This is supported by the high incidence of cortical perforation, tooth resorption, lesion size, bony destruction, and a high rate of recurr

Osteochondroma of the mandibular condyle.

Osteochondroma is one of the most common benign tumors of the axial skeleton, but is rarely found in the facial bones. When present, the tumor is most often reported to affect the mandibular coronoid process. Osteochondroma of the mandibular condyle is extremely rare. A case is presented of a massive osteochondroma of the mandibular condyle leading to facial asymmetry and disturbed occlusion. The diagnosis was confirmed by radiological and histological examination.

Epithelioid Osteoblastoma: Clinicopathologic Features of a Classic Case with Aggressive Behavior.

INTRODUCTION: Epithelioid osteoblastoma is a rare variant of osteoblastoma, characterized by large osteoblasts with epithelioid morphology. Although benign, it can be locally aggressive, frequently affecting the spine and long bones, with up to 26% of cases in the craniofacial region, especially the mandible. CASE PRESENTATION: We present a case of a 12-year-old male with a mandibular epithelioid osteoblastoma causing cortical expansion and tooth displacement. CT revealed a 4.7 cm mass with calcifications and periosteal reaction. Histology showed epithelioid osteoblast proliferation within a

Macro and microscopic study of a rare case of Papilliferous Keratoameloblastoma using a stereo zoom microscope.

Papilliferous keratoameloblastoma is an extremely rare variant of ameloblastoma, a benign odontogenic tumor, with only seven cases reported in the English language literature. This variant presents with the metaplastic transformation of stellate reticulum-like cells to the extent of forming papillary structures exhibiting superficial keratinization of varying thickness. This paper describes the pathognomonic macroscopic features of this tumor observed during gross examination under the stereo zoom microscope that differentiate it from the other odontogenic tumors which have not been explored i
