Social Media, Racial Identity, and the Mental Health Consequences of Vicarious Racism among Black Adults.

Recent literature suggests that vicarious racism is linked to adverse psychological health outcomes. However, our understanding of protective and risk factors in this context remains limited. This study examined the relationships among social media use integration, vicarious racism, individual differences (race-based rejection sensitivity and racial centrality), and psychological outcomes (anxiety and depression) in a sample of Black American adults. We hypothesized that higher social media use integration would predict greater anxiety and depression, with vicarious racism accounting for these

Social Media Challenge Gone Wrong: A Severe Case of Colonic Obstruction Secondary to Xylophagia and Literature Review.

Pica is characterized by the persistent craving and consumption of non-food substances. In some cases, individuals ingest paper-based materials, a behavior known as xylophagia, which may lead to gastrointestinal complications if the behavior becomes severe. Social media has recently been recognized as a potential influence on emerging patterns of unusual behaviors in adolescents, including those related to health and eating. We report this case to highlight the influence of social media on pica-related behaviors and its potential for life-threatening complications. We describe the case of an 1

A dyadic perspective on parent and adolescent social media use: the roles of communication, joint technology use, and validation motives in problematic social media use.

BACKGROUND: Parents significantly influence adolescent behavior, yet research often overlooks dyadic interactions in shaping media use. Understanding how family members’ technology habits and communication relate to problematic media use (PMU) is critical for developing effective interventions. OBJECTIVE: This study used actor–partner interdependence modeling (APIM) to examine associations among time on social media, PMU, and three mediators (open communication, joint technology use, and validation motives) within parent–adolescent dyads. METHODS: Participants were 85 parent–adolescent dyads (

Passive Social Media Use Is Associated with Social Withdrawal ("Hikikomori") Vulnerability in Autistic and Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder Young Adults.

Autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are neurodevelopmental conditions associated with social communication differences and distinctive patterns of online engagement. Both conditions have been linked to increased risk of social withdrawal, yet little research has examined hikikomori vulnerability-a continuum of withdrawal-related tendencies-within a transdiagnostic digital context. This study investigated hikikomori vulnerability among UK-based young adults with autism or ADHD and examined how active and passive social media use and online gaming relate to withdrawal vuln

The relation between social media use and novel psychoactive substance use among adolescents - the mediating role of internalizing and externalizing behaviors.

BACKGROUND: This study explores whether internalizing and externalizing behaviors mediate the association between adolescent social media use and novel psychoactive substance (NPS) use in Australia, addressing a gap where counterfactual mediation methods and NPS use have been rarely applied. METHODS: The study sample included 1605 adolescents from the Longitudinal Survey of Australian Children. We assessed adolescents’ internalizing and externalizing problems using the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire. Adolescent NPS use was evaluated by self-reported ever use of synthetic cannabis and

Communicating the health implications of global environmental change: a mixed-methods systematic review of health framing in environmental messaging.

BACKGROUND: Global environmental change poses a significant threat to human health, necessitating effective communication strategies to raise public awareness and motivate mitigation and adaptation actions. Previous studies have examined whether framing climate change and other environmental issues as health problems can increase public engagement, with mixed results. PURPOSE: This mixed-methods systematic review synthesizes existing evidence on the effectiveness of health framing in text-based environmental communication interventions. METHODS: We searched 5 electronic databases (Web of Sci

How often we see alcohol in movies: A Systematic review and Meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to alcohol portrayals in movies has been associated with increased alcohol use. Several studies have examined the prevalence and frequency of alcohol portrayals in movies, but systematic synthesis of this evidence is lacking. This review aimed to estimate the pooled proportion of movies that portrayed alcohol and the average frequency of such portrayals per movie. METHODS: Systematic searches were conducted across three major databases (MEDLINE, PsycINFO, and Web of Science). Eligible articles were selected through title and abstract screening, and full-text review. Studi

The role of alexithymia and maladaptive coping in long-term Trauma: Insights from the aftermath of the October 7th attacks.

The study investigates the psychological effects of alexithymia and maladaptive coping strategies on individuals exposed indirectly to trauma through media coverage. Focusing the October 7th, 2023, terrorist attacks in Israel, we explore how alexithymia characterized by difficulty in processing emotions, exacerbates trauma-related symptoms. The research examines 213 participants using the Toronto Alexithymia Scale (TAS-20) as well as trauma, somatization and coping questionnaires. Results indicate that individuals with alexithymia experience more severe and prolonged trauma symptoms, including

Print media coverage of risk-risk tradeoffs associated with West Nile encephalitis and pesticide spraying.

When mosquito-borne West Nile virus emerged in the United States in 1999 and triggered pesticide spraying, society was faced with a controversy over an important risk-risk tradeoff-the risks of pesticide exposure versus those of West Nile encephalitis. Effective public communication about risk-risk tradeoffs is important because it can assist individuals and society in investing resources optimally. This study examined how effectively major North American print media in the year 2000 provided information on this risk-risk tradeoff. My colleagues and I found that the print media were generally

Early Use of Proton Pump Inhibitors Increases Risk of Upper Respiratory Tract Infections in Children: A Birth Cohort Study.

OBJECTIVES: Proton pump inhibitors (PPI) are frequently prescribed in infancy for functional gastrointestinal disorders such as colic and gastroesophageal reflux, despite limited evidence of benefit and potential risk. We aimed to examine the association between early PPI exposure and respiratory tract infections (RTIs) in a birth cohort. METHODS: In the ARIES cohort (Santiago, Chile), 200 of 265 children with complete data were followed from birth to 24 months. Early PPI exposure was defined as any use during the first 6 months, while any exposure encompassed the first 24 months. Clinical da

Psychiatric reactions among the non-exposed population who viewed disaster-related short videos: Evidence from the 2021 Henan floods.

Media-triggered mental disorders are common when people experience traumatic events. However, few studies have examined the underlying mechanism of how viewing disaster-related short videos triggers psychiatric reactions among non-exposed populations in the context of today's media ecology. Moreover, limited studies have employed psychological network analysis to comprehensively disentangle the associations between diverse forms of media exposure and psychological symptoms. To fill these research gaps, we conducted a survey on a non-exposed population (N = 516) during the 2021 Henan floods to

Latent profile analysis of depressive symptoms and its associations with problematic social media use and demographic characteristics among Chinese college students.

This study gave the Depression Scale and the Problematic Social Media Use Scale to 3,540 college students in order to examine the categorical distribution of depression levels among them as well as the predictive roles of problematic social media use (PSMU) and demographic characteristics. According to the findings, college students' depression levels fall into three latent categories: low, moderate, and high. Higher PSMU levels were linked to higher depression levels. Additionally, demographic factors including male, rural background, and grade also exerted significant influences on depressio

Social and emotional e-processes and responses in problematic social media use among adolescents.

Although several psychological correlates of problematic social media use (PSMU) have been identified, less is known about social and emotional processes and responses occurring within digital contexts. Recent research with adolescents has defined socio-emotional e-competencies as an individual's ability to regulate their emotions online (emotional e-regulation) and maintain positive online relationships (social e-competency). Using Structural Equation Modeling (SEM), this two-wave study examined whether socio-emotional e-competencies are associated to later PSMU via two different mechanisms:

Media coverage of digital healthcare in Spain before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND: Recent research has confirmed the media's impact on shaping public opinion and influencing the acceptance of new therapies and health-related technologies. However, despite significant changes in recent years, media representations of healthcare digitalization remain underexplored. This study is the first to describe how Spanish media addressed digital healthcare before, during, and after the COVID-19 pandemic. METHOD: To this end, all related articles published in five of the most widely read newspapers in Spain over a 10-year period (2014-2023) were retrieved from the MyNews dat

Effects of Social Media Narratives on Affective and Behavioral Responses to Menopause Content: Randomized Online Experimental Study.

BACKGROUND: Social media is an increasingly prominent channel for communicating menopause information and experiences, yet the affective and behavioral consequences of different narrative framings remain unclear. OBJECTIVE: We examined how distress, normalizing, and transformative narratives influenced women's immediate responses to menopause content online, drawing on established narrative framings of menopause as normality, distress, and transformation. METHODS: In an online experiment, UK women aged 40 to 83 years who were perimenopausal or postmenopausal were recruited via Prolific, a wi
