The daily excretion of epinephrine and norepinephrine was analysed throughout one menstrual cycle in 8 normal women under every day circumstances. Blood levels of LH, FSH, prolactin, oestradiol, progesterone, testosterone and cortisol were determined by RIA every other day, or daily around the time of ovulation. No characteristic cyclic variations were found in epinephrine except for a peak in the premenstrual period, whilst norepinephrine was increased during menstruation and at about the time of ovulation in all women. The cortisol patterns showed no characteristic cyclic changes. Possible c

The authors showed that 2,3-DPG red cell concentration (2,3-DPG) WAS SIGNIFICANTLY HIGHER DURING THE LAST WEEK Of the menstrual cycle of five women (1.08+/-0.09 mol-,p;Hb-1) (M +/- 1 SE) THAN DURING THE First part and the last but one week of the cycle (0.86+/-0.04 mol-molHb-1, p less than 0.01). PACO2 was significantly lower during the last week of the cycle (36.3+/-1.3 torr) than during the first part and the last but one week of the cycle(40.1+/-0.8 torr, p less than 0.001). This hypocapnia was due to transient hyperventilation in the second part of the menstrual cycle. 5 men were studied d

PURPOSE: Despite evidence of phase-dependent performance variations during the menstrual cycle (MC) and potential impairments under oral contraceptives (OC) use, findings remain inconsistent. We studied psycho-physiological and performance fluctuations using a feasible, standardized monitoring battery.
METHODS: Twenty-two naturally menstruating women and six OC-using women performed standardized tests in specified phases (MC: early follicular phase [EFP], ovulatory phase [OP], and midluteal phase; OC: early inactive pill phase [EIPP], late inactive pill phase [LIPP], and mid-active pill phase

BACKGROUND: Women are overrepresented in samples of patients with rapid cycling bipolar disorder (RCBD). To explore whether menstrually related mood changes might account for this gender difference, we studied the relationship between menstrual cycle phase and mood in a sample of premenopausal women with rapid cycling bipolar disorder (RCBD).
METHODS: Twenty-five women with RCBD completed daily self-rating forms indicating their mood and days of menstruation for a minimum of three months. The data were analyzed for each individual and for the group as a whole, categorically (depression, euthy

INTRODUCTION: Anecdotal evidence suggests that the menstrual cycle influences symptoms of Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders (OCRD), although scientific literature investigating this effect is scarce. The premenstrual phase has been associated with the exacerbation of certain psychiatric conditions, with some reports showing premenstrual worsening of OCD. This scoping review aimed to systematically synthesize the evidence on the effect of the menstrual cycle on OCRD symptoms.
METHODS: Systematic searches were conducted on MEDLINE, EMBASE, APA PsycINFO, Cochrane Database of Systematic

STUDY QUESTION: Does the endometrium of oligo-ovulatory women with polyendocrine metabolic ovarian syndrome (PMOS) exhibit menstrual cycle phase-specific transcriptomic alterations compared to women without PMOS?
SUMMARY ANSWER: Compared to healthy controls, women with PMOS exhibit endometrial transcriptomic dysregulations which are menstrual cycle phase-specific and, most notably, related to mitochondrial function.
WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: Infertility and gestational dysfunction in women with PMOS are increasingly attributed to endometrial abnormalities, yet the underlying mechanisms behind P

Premenstrual exacerbation of an existing psychiatric disorder refers to the worsening of symptoms inherent to the condition during the premenstrual phase. Research consistently indicates that hormonal fluctuations during the menstrual cycle present a unique period of vulnerability for the onset or exacerbation of psychiatric symptoms, impacting diagnosis, risk assessment, and treatment. This review sought to elucidate the phenomenon of premenstrual exacerbation and its impact across a spectrum of psychiatric illnesses, including mood, anxiety, psychotic, obsessive-compulsive, personality, and

BACKGROUND: A minority of naturally cycling individuals experience clinically significant affective changes across the menstrual cycle. However, few studies have examined cognitive and behavioral constructs that may maintain or worsen these changes. Several small studies link rumination with premenstrual negative affect, with authors concluding that a tendency to ruminate amplifies and perpetuates hormone-sensitive affective symptoms. Replication in larger samples is needed to confirm the validity of rumination as a treatment target.
METHOD: 190 cycling individuals (M = 30.82 years; 61.1% Cau

The objective of this study was to examine how the menstrual cycle affects knee joint position sense (JPS) and dynamic balance. Forty-five physically active women (age 20.87 ± 0.54 years) participated in this study. Pain was measured with a Visual Analogue Scale (VAS). Knee JPS was measured using the passive-active repositioning method using a digital inclinometer. The modified Star Excursion Balance Test was used to assess dynamic balance (SEBT). The VAS scores were higher in the menses phase compared to the mid-luteal phase (p < 0.001) and mid-follicular phase (p = 0.002). No significant dif

BACKGROUND: Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is the most common genetic disorder of the endocrine gland among females during the age of reproduction with an estimated prevalence ranging from 2.2 % to 26 %. It is a typical reason for ovulatory infertility, menstrual dysfunction, and hirsutism. It is a condition in which ovarian cysts develop with a diameter of between two and nine millimeters on one or each ovaries and therefore there is an increase in the volume of one is larger than ten millimeters.

PURPOSE: In fibroglandular breast tissue, conventional dynamic contrast-enhanced MR-mammography is known to be affected by water content changes during the menstrual cycle. Likewise, amide proton transfer (APT) chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST)-MRI might be inherently prone to the menstrual cycle, as CEST signals are indirectly detected via the water signal. The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of the menstrual cycle on APT CEST-MRI in fibroglandular breast tissue.
METHOD: Ten healthy premenopausal women (19-34 years) were included in this IRB approved prospec

BACKGROUND: The latest threat to world health is coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19), and the exact death rate of SARS-CoV-2 infection is still to be explored and varies widely throughout the world. Inactivated virus vaccines, recombinant viral vaccines, subunit vaccines, DNA vaccines, and attenuated vaccinations have all been investigated in the hunt for an optimal SARS-CoV vaccine. Some women had menstrual abnormalities after immunisation, including heavy menstrual bleeding (menorrhagia), frequent bleeding (metrorrhagia/polymenorrhea), and postmenopausal haemorrhage. Vaccine-induced thromboc

AIMS: Human endometrium resists embryo implantation except during the window period. Currently, uterine HURP expression is known to be involved in endometrial stromal proliferation during embryo implantation of mice. Thus, we demonstrated hepatoma up-regulated protein (HURP) expression in the human endometrium during the menstrual cycle, as well as HURP regulation in endometrial stromal cells (ESCs).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We collected human endometrial samples from different menstrual cycle phases (early/late proliferative, and early/mid/late secretory), and then analyzed these samples by im

Basal ganglia (BG) are involved in inhibitory control (IC) and known to change in structure and activation along the menstrual cycle. Therefore, we investigated BG activation and connectivity patterns related to IC during different cycle phases. Thirty-six naturally cycling women were scanned three times performing a Stop Signal Task and hormonal levels analysed from saliva samples. We found an impaired Stop signal reaction time (SSRT) during pre-ovulatory compared to menses the higher the baseline IC of women. BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Fluctuations of female sex hormones during menstrual cycle influence pain perception. Endogenous pain inhibition is impaired in follicular phase of menstrual cycle. We tested the primary hypothesis that the women having surgery during their follicular phase have more acute pain and require higher opioids than those in the luteal phase, and secondarily we tested that women who have surgery during their follicular phase have more incisional pain at 3 month postoperatively.
METHODS: 127 adult females having laparoscopic cholecystectomy were randomized to have surgery d

Reproductive hormone levels are highly variable among premenopausal women during the menstrual cycle. Accurate timing of hormone measurement is essential, especially when investigating day- or phase-specific effects. The BioCycle Study used daily urine home fertility monitors to help detect the luteinising hormone (LH) surge in order to schedule visits with biologically relevant windows of hormonal variability. However, as the LH surge is brief and cycles vary in length, relevant hormonal changes may not align with scheduled visits even when fertility monitors are used. Using monitor data, mea

RATIONALE: Studies in rodents observed that the effects of stress on memory are modulated by gonadal hormones. In animals and humans, stress and cortisol treatment impairs memory retrieval.
OBJECTIVES: To investigate if the acute impairing effect of cortisol on memory retrieval in women is influenced by endogenous or exogenous gonadal steroids.
METHODS: Three groups of women were studied: women during mensis (n=13), women in the luteal phase (n=14), and women using oral contraceptives (OCs; n=20). In a double-blind crossover fashion, they received cortisol (30 mg) or placebo 1 h prior to mem
