Occurrence of microplastics in bottled water from Croatia: a Raman spectroscopy approach.

The occurrence of microplastics (MPs) in bottled water is still largely unexplored in Croatia. This study fills this gap by analysing six water brands available on the Croatian market, all bottled in either virgin or recycled polyethylene terephthalate (PET). In order to analyse microplastics down to a size of 1 µm, the water from the purchased bottles was filtered with silicon filters with a pore size of 1 µm and then micro-Raman spectroscopy was performed. A significant reduction in analysis time was achieved by using a randomly selected filter area of 12.05 mm2 instead of the conventional 1

Hitchhikers in bivalve immune system: Mixed microplastics and nanoplastics triggers hemocyte autophagy.

Natural microplastic and nanoplastics (MNPs) mixtures generally consist of multiple sizes, but how their co-existence influences the immune system of aquatic organisms remains elusive. Here, we quantitatively tracked and demonstrated that such heterogeneity dynamically reshaped bivalve hemocyte burden in non-additive modes with subpopulation-specific consequences for immune function. Kinetic modeling revealed distinct internalization patterns and selectivity among hemocyte subpopulations, driven by particle proportions and uptake dynamics. Granulocytes displayed indiscriminate capacity for MNP

Microplastics and nanoplastics released by peeling off aluminium foil cap sealing liner.

Most of our food, drinks, medicines, health care products and cosmetics are bottled for delivery and sealed using aluminium foil liner that is coated with a plastic layer. Once we open it by peeling off the liner, some debris might be released as microplastics that are tested here. By advancing the Raman imaging and the statistical analysis, we can capture ∼25 microplastics per 0.04 mm2 or ∼625 / mm2, particularly when scratch or scrape the container or liner surface, which might be a big concern as the potential microplastic source in our daily lives. The traditional analysis based on a homog

Landfill liners as a source of microplastics: Do the guards guard themselves?

Microplastic contamination has received recognition as a significant environmental issue, with its abundance observed in different environments. Landfills, which serve as important storage sites for plastic waste, are known to release large quantities of microplastics through leachate. However, synthetic liners' role as microplastic contributors is poorly known. The study examines the contribution of High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) geomembrane liners to microplastic concentration in landfill leachate. 1.5 mm thick HDPE geomembrane was subjected to accelerated aging, submerged in synthetic lea

Carbon Cycling in Wetlands Under the Shadow of Microplastics: Challenges and Prospects.

Wetlands are one of the most crucial ecosystems for regulating carbon sequestration and mitigating global climate change. However, the disturbance to carbon dynamics caused by microplastics (MPs) in wetlands cannot be overlooked. This review explores the impacts of MPs on the carbon cycles within wetland ecosystems, focusing on the underlying physicochemical and microbial mechanisms. The accumulation of MPs in wetland sediments can severely destabilize plant root functions, disrupting water, nutrient, and oxygen transport, thereby reducing plant biomass development. Although MPs may temporaril

The Impact of Microplastics on Allergy: Current Status and Future Research Directions.

BACKGROUND: Microplastics (MPs) constitute an emerging category of environmental pollutants that have attracted considerable scientific scrutiny due to their widespread global distribution and documented health hazards. Importantly, these particles pose a threat to human health by disrupting epithelial barriers, which in turn heightens susceptibility to allergic sensitization and exacerbates pre-existing allergic conditions. SUMMARY: This review consolidates contemporary evidence regarding the involvement of MPs in allergic diseases, focusing on their principal sources, such as environmental

Cellular Uptake and Tissue Retention of Microplastics in Black Soldier Fly Larvae.

Microplastic pollution is a pressing global concern, yet its immunotoxicological impacts on invertebrates remain poorly understood. The Black Soldier Fly (Hermetia illucens) larva has gained attention for its role in waste management and potential bioremediation, making it essential to evaluate its interactions with microplastics. In this study, fluorescent carboxylate-modified polystyrene microbeads were directly injected into the hemocoel of larvae to bypass gut-associated variables and investigate systemic immune responses. Experimental groups were analyzed at multiple time points (1 h, 6 h

Microplastics exacerbate tissue damage and promote carcinogenesis following liver infection in mice.

Cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide, posing a substantial threat to human well-being. Microplastics (MPs) exposure can harm human health and the carcinogenicity of MP remains uncertain. In this study, we investigated carcinogenesis by MPs exposure. We observed MP significantly exacerbated hepatic injury in infectious conditions. In addition, cancer-related p53 and p21 signals are activated by MPs. Analysis of the liver transcriptomic landscape uncovered a noteworthy intensification of the carcinogenesis pathway by MPs compared with pre-infection. The transcription factor SALL2 could a

Stormwater runoff microplastics: Polymer types, particle size, and factors controlling loading rates.

Stormwater runoff is a pathway of entry for microplastics (MPs, plastics <5 mm) into aquatic ecosystems. The objectives of this study were to determine MP size, morphology, chemical composition, and loading across urban storm events. Particles were extracted from stormwater samples collected at outfall locations using wet peroxide oxidation and cellulose digestion followed by analysis via attenuated total reflectance (ATR) FTIR. Concentrations observed were 0.99 ± 1.10 MP/L for 500-1000 μm and 0.41 ± 0.30 MP/L for the 1000-5000 μm size ranges. Seventeen different polymer types were observed. M

Photochemical Oxidation of Polyethylene Terephthalate Microplastics Adsorbed on Sand and Silica Surfaces.

The environmental contamination by plastics, microplastics, and related compounds is a major concern. While the detection and release of micro- and nanoparticles from these materials have been widely studied, the formation and release of molecules resulting from their degradation in the environment have been overlooked. This work presents a study of the products released from poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) irradiated as pure particles and adsorbed on silica and sand surfaces under different irradiation conditions. The role of oxygen was also evaluated. The products were identified by gas c

Polystyrene microplastics exacerbate acetochlor-induced reproductive toxicity and transgenerational effects in zebrafish.

Microplastic (MPs) can adsorb co-existing pollutants, and alter their behavior and toxicity. Meanwhile, amide herbicides like acetochlor (ACT) are widely used in agriculture, with potential endocrine-disrupting effects that raise ecological concerns. The aim of this research was to examine the effects of MPs on the reproductive endocrine disruption caused by ACT and the effects of maternal transmission. Zebrafish were employed in this study to assess the reproductive toxicity of ACT alone and in combination with polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) of different sizes (200 nm and 2 μm) and concen

Polystyrene microplastics disrupt adrenal steroid synthesis in male mice via mitochondrial dysfunction.

Microplastics have gained significant social attention, as they can enter our bodies through food and drinking water. The adrenal gland is essential for the maintenance of metabolic homeostasis and stress responses. Nevertheless, the effects of microplastics on the steroid synthesis in the adrenal cortex was still unclear. In this study, through both in vivo and in vitro models, we found that polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) impaired adrenal steroid synthesis, leading to a reduction in corticosterone levels. In vivo, we further observed that chronic exposure to PS-MPs (0.25, 0.5 and 1 mg/d f

Photocatalytic degradation of polyethylene and polystyrene microplastics by α-Fe2O3/g-C3N4.

This study investigated the photodegradation of microplastics (MPs) by α-Fe2O3/g-C3N4. The effects of α-Fe2O3/g-C3N4 on MPs' surface were investigated through various techniques. With the addition of α-Fe2O3/g-C3N4 and under visible light irradiation, cracks and folds were observed on the MP films and particles. Compared to the treatment without photocatalyst addition, the mass loss of MPs increased with irradiation time when α-Fe2O3/g-C3N4 was added. Specifically, polystyrene films and particles in water showed 9.94% and 7.81% increased mass loss, respectively. The degradation of MPs using α-

Polystyrene microplastics exposure aggravates acute liver injury by promoting Kupffer cell pyroptosis.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the long-term effects of polystyrene (PS) exposure on acute liver injury. METHODS: The carbon tetrachloride-induced acute injury mouse model was subjected to long-term PS exposure. Pyroptosis was inhibited by knocking out Gsdmd in mice or treating with the Gsdmd inhibitor necrosulfonamide (NSA) to evaluate the effect of PS on liver injury. Kupffer cells were used as a cellular model to examine the effects of PS on cell pyroptosis, lactate dehydrogenase release rate, structural integrity (propidium iodide staining), and inflammatory factor levels. RESULTS: In mice, P

Chromium (IV) transfer to Amusium pleuronectes by LDPE microplastics: An experimental study.

An experiment was carried out to investigate the potential of virgin LDPE microplastics to transfer heavy metals. Desired shapes (fibres, fragments, and films) and sizes (< 5 mm) of virgin LDPE microplastics were immersed in a known concentration (30 µg/l) of chromium (IV). These Cr-coated microplastics were introduced into a culture tank containing edible scallops (Amusium pleuronectes). After the completion of the experiment (5 days), the sediments in the culture tank and edible tissues of A. pleuronectes were tested for the presence of Cr. In the sediments, a maximum concentration of 1.934

Amplifiers of environmental risk of microplastics in sewage sludge: Thermal drying treatment.

Sewage sludge was already identified as an important source of microplastics (MPs) in the environment. Therefore, investigating the effects of sludge treatment processes on sludge-based MPs is essential for understanding the environmental risks and controlling their release. This study investigated the occurrence characteristics and elucidated the fragmentation mechanism of sludge-based MPs before and after the thermal drying treatment of sludge. The results showed that this treatment increased the abundance of sludge-based MPs by about 10-fold, with enhanced fragmentation and fracture paramet

Accumulation of polystyrene microplastics induces liver fibrosis by activating cGAS/STING pathway.

The environmental pollution from microplastics has caused concern from the whole society due to its harm to organisms. However, the effect of microplastics on liver damage and fibrosis remains unclear in the case of long-term accumulation. The present study demonstrated that the 0.1 μm microplastic could enter hepatocytes from circulation and result liver damage even at a low concentration. Microplastic exposure could induce DNA damage in both nucleus and mitochondria, by which the dsDNA fragment was translocated into cytoplasm and triggered the DNA sensing adaptor STING. The activation of cGA
