BACKGROUND: The objective of this study was to determine the prevalence of intestinal parasites, with special emphasis on microsporidia and Cryptosporidium, as well as their association with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) symptoms, risk factors, and other digestive parasites. We also wish to determine the molecular biology definitions of the species and genotypes of microsporidia and Cryptosporidium in HIV patients.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, carried out in Kinshasa, Democratic Republic of the Congo, stool samples were collected from 242 HIV patients (87 men and 155 women) wi

Autophagy is an evolutionarily conserved catabolic process essential for cellular quality control, metabolic adaptation, and developmental programming. The silkworm has emerged as a compelling model organism for investigating autophagy due to its well-characterized genome, ease of genetic manipulation, and significant homology with human disease-related genes. This review synthesizes current advances in silkworm autophagy research across four interconnected domains: molecular regulatory mechanisms, developmental functions, stress-induced responses, and disease-related implications. The steroid

At least 325 water-associated outbreaks of parasitic protozoan disease have been reported. North American and European outbreaks accounted for 93% of all reports and nearly two-thirds of outbreaks occurred in North America. Over 30% of all outbreaks were documented from Europe, with the UK accounting for 24% of outbreaks, worldwide. Giardia duodenalis and Cryptosporidium parvum account for the majority of outbreaks (132; 40.6% and 165; 50.8%, respectively), Entamoeba histolytica and Cyclospora cayetanensis have been the aetiological agents in nine (2.8%) and six (1.8%) outbreaks, respectively,

HEp-2 cell-adherent Escherichia coli and the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) itself have recently been incriminated as causes of chronic HIV-associated diarrhea. This study sought to determine the prevalence of these two agents among HIV-infected patients with diarrhea in an outpatient setting in the United States and to compare their prevalence to that of other commonly recognized enteropathogens known to be present in this population. HEp-2 cell-adherent E. coli was found in 20 of 83 (24.1%) patients with diarrhea. A diffuse pattern of adherence was the most common, found in 14 of 20 (70%

Microsporidia are zoonotic protozoa which were rare human pathogens prior to 1985, when Enterocytozoon bieneusi was described in human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients with chronic diarrhea. Another species, Encephalitozoon (Septata) intestinalis, is associated with diarrhea and chronic sinusitis, and approximately 25 cases have been reported in the literature. However, other microsporidial infections in human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients remain extremely rare. We report the first case of a Pleistophora sp.-like microsporidian infection presenting as a progressive severe my

The study demonstrated that the resuspension of bottom sediments caused by bathers and their direct microbial input resulted in elevated levels of Cryptosporidium parvum oocysts, Giardia lamblia cysts, and microsporidian spores, particularly Enterocytozoon bieneusi, in recreational beach water on days deemed acceptable for bathing by fecal bacterial standards.

This study presents the first documented case of a disease syndrome in cultured largefin longbarbel catfish (Hemibagrus macropterus). The condition is characterized by massive abdominal pseudotumor formation, severe cachexia, and functional gonadal arrest. Comprehensive pathological investigation revealed that the pseudotumor was encapsulated by fibroblasts and primarily composed of host-derived, poorly differentiated hyperplastic cells, interspersed with invasive, basophilic Type III cells. These cells and associated inflammatory-fibrotic lesions were also disseminated in the gill, kidney and

Intracellular parasites of the genus Glugea Thélohan, 1891 (Microsporidia) comprise about 34 putative species capable of causing high morbidity and mortality in freshwater and marine teleost fishes. In this study, we report on the first mass mortality event associated with Glugea sp. infecting free-ranging round sardinella Sardinella aurita in the southern Tyrrhenian Sea (Italy). Here, we describe the ultrastructure of mature spores of this microsporidian and characterize it molecularly, as well as report its phylogenetic position. Most of the affected fish showed an irregular swelling of its

In a compatible context, hypereosinophilia is suggestive of helminthosis. When the count is higher than 1000/mm(3), a primo-invasion syndroma may be considered, especially if allergic signs are present. Below that level, the helminthosis is probably at the adult stage (chronic phase). In a chronic diarrhoea occurring after a journey abroad, "emerging" protozoa (crypto-microsporidia, Isospora, Cyclospora…) are possibly in cause. A presumptive treatment may be considered. A systematic screening for schistosomiasis (serology and stool examination) is recommended in travellers exposed to the risk

A protocol for the handling of small intestinal biopsies from HIV-infected patients is presented. This protocol includes the Warthin-Starry stain for the detection of microsporidia. This stain has proved a reliable and sensitive diagnostic technique for microsporidial infections as it stains both Enterocytozoon bieneusi and Septata intestinalis in duodenal enterocytes. Because the stain demonstrates Septata intestinalis in lamina propria macrophages as well as enterocytes, it allows for the practical differentiation of these two microsporidial infections. The Warthin-Starry stain has also demo

The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of Microsporidium among patients given a diagnosis of cancer. For this purpose fecal samples from 320 patients aged 23.60+/-23.00 years were examined using native-Lugol and sedimentation methods and evaluated with modified trichrome, trichrome, and calcofluor dyes. Moreover a control group of 320 non-cancer patients was set up. While 10.9% of the patient group was found to have Microsporidium, only 5.6% of the control group did. Comparison between the control and patient groups in terms of presence of Microsporidium revealed a statistically

Three mongrel dogs, aged 10 months (case 1), 14 months (case 2) and 7.5 years (case 3), were presented because of ophthalmologic disorders of 4 months, 6 months and 7 years duration, respectively. All three dogs were offspring of stray dogs from Hungary and Serbia and had positive serum antibody titres against Encephalitozoon (E.) cuniculi. The two young dogs showed unilateral, the older dog bilateral chronic anterior uveitis with posterior synechia and focal anterior cortical cataract. The fundi that could be evaluated developed focal tapetal hyporeflective lesions in the course of the diseas

Microsporidia are ubiquitous, spore-forming, intracellular parasites infecting invertebrates and vertebrates. Some of them are important opportunistic pathogens in humans, including three species of genus Encephalitozoon. Intraspecies genetic variation with a different range of hosts is known in Encephalitozoon cuniculi distinguishing four genotypes. Recently, E. cuniculi is often observed in pet animals, mainly E. cuniculi genotype I in pet rabbits. This study described a fatal encephalitozoonosis in a group of pet rodents Steppe lemmings (Lagurus lagurus). The animals were presented with pro

Microsporidiosis (nosema disease) of the European honeybee ( Apis mellifera L.) is present in bee colonies worldwide. Until recently, Nosema apis had been regarded as the causative agent of the disease, which may have many negative effects on the colony and cause heavy economic losses in apicultures. Another microsporidium species, Nosema ceranae , was reported to infest the Asian honeybee ( Apis ceranae ), but both honeybee species are susceptible to both microsporidia. In the European honeybee N. ceranae was first detected in Spain in the year 2006. As it is difficult to distinguish N. ceran

BACKGROUND: Enterocytozoon bieneusi are the most common microsporidia associated with different clinical manifestations such as diarrhoea, respiratory tract inflammation and acalculous cholecystitis, especially in immunocompromised patients. Infection usually occurs by ingestion of food and water contaminated with spores, but can also result from direct contact with spores through broken skin, eye lesions, and sexual transmission, depending on the microsporidian species. Although there are reports of E. bieneusi found in humans and animals in Brazil, there are no published studies of environme

Ocular, peroral, intraperitoneal, intramuscular, and subcutaneous inoculation of severe combined immunodeficient (SCID) mice with spores of the human isolate (CDC: V404) of Brachiola algerae (syn. Nosema algerae) (Phylum Microspora) revealed that the microsporidium develops in viscera of the immunodeficient mouse host, but only after the ocular administration of spores. It is hypothesized that the physico-chemical milieu of the conjunctiva and cornea helped to adapt the originally 'poikilothermic microsporidian' to the conditions within the homoiothermic organism. Ocular application of spores

We report a rare case of a deep stromal keratitis with a chronic indolent course, diagnosed as microsporidial keratitis from corneal scrapings. The patient's condition worsened despite medical therapy and penetrating keratoplasty was performed. The histopathology of the corneal tissue revealed multiple microsporidial spores in the posterior stroma and the endothelial exudates, whereas there was no clinical or histopathological breach in Descemet's membrane. This is the second report in the literature to report that micropsoridial spores can cross the intact Descemet's membrane.

Sixty-four patients infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) participated in a study to determine opportunistic enteric pathogens and compare them with the patients' clinical status. The most frequently found pathogens were microsporidium (81.2%), Cryptosporidium parvum (20.3%), Candida albicans (12.5%) and Blastocystis hominis (10.9%). Less frequently found pathogens were Giardia intestinalis (6.2%), Cyclospora (4.7%), Opishorchis viverrini ova (3.1%), Strongyloides stercoralis larvae (3.1%) and hookworm ova (1.6%). The presence of enteric pathogens was not significantly associated wi

Workflow for waterborne parasites DNA detection in surface water. Screening for environmental surveillance in monitoring and resource-limited settings. Zoonotic protozoa and microsporidia are waterborne pathogens with implications for animal and human health. Their resistant stages can persist in freshwater. Standard reference methods for water analysis are often limited to specific parasites, require large water volumes, and depends on expensive equipment. Practical alternatives are needed to facilitate parasite detection in water. This study aimed to develop a pellet-based workflow to allow
