OBJECTIVE: Rate of learning is often cited as a deterrent in the use of endoscopic ear surgery. This study investigated the learning curves of novice surgeons performing simulated ear surgery using either an endoscope or a microscope.
METHODS: A prospective multi-site clinical research study was conducted. Seventy-two medical students were randomly allocated to the endoscope or microscope group, and performed 10 myringotomy and ventilation tube insertions. Trial times were used to produce learning curves. From these, slope (learning rate) and asymptote (optimal proficiency) were ascertained.

CONCLUSIONS: Trans-tympanic plugging of the Eustachian tube (ET) with the silicone plug (Kobayashi Plug) induced long-term effectiveness for over 80% of chronic and severe patulous ET (PET) patients. CONCLUSION: It is recommended to perform follow-up tympanometry and if necessary tonal audiometry in children who have normal plain otoscopy findings after recovering from acute otitis media (AOM). Children with Type B tympanogram, 3 months following the onset of AOM, are very likely to have a conductive hearing loss. From 1982 to 1987, 20 patients with disabling attacks of vertigo and severe hearing loss due to unilateral Ménière's disease were treated with local intratympanic gentamycin. In 18 patients control of vertiginous attacks was achieved. Hearing deteriorated in 8 patients. BACKGROUND: Middle ear ventilation and the drainage of secretions are the basic functions of the eustachian tube. Eustachian tube (ET) dysfunction can lead to otitis media. Multiple causes of ET dysfunction exist; ET obstruction is one of them. Osseous obliteration of ET is quite rare. In the literature, there are two cases of solitary osteoma and a case of hamartoma with an osseous content in the ET. Herein, this report describes the case of a patient with multiple osseous lesions consistent with osteomas in the ET, causing ipsilateral otitis media with CT findings.

400 patients with bilateral secretory otitis media (SOM) were treated with ventilating tubes (VT) in a prospectiv study.
