Bilingual aphasia and language control: a follow-up fMRI and intrinsic connectivity study.

In a world that is becoming more multilingual, bilingual aphasia is a clinical problem with a major clinical impact. However, at present we lack causal explanations of the many features of recovery patterns and there is no consensus about the language in which the patient should receive speech therapy. Further advance requires an understanding of the dynamics of recovery. In a novel longitudinal, single-case study, we combine fMRI and dynamic causal modeling to examine the effects of specific language treatment for picture naming on the representation and control of language areas during the c

Multimodal medical diagnosis: a mini review of LLM-vision fusion models in low-resource healthcare settings.

Recent advances in large language models (LLMs) and vision transformers have enabled multimodal systems that integrate clinical text with medical imaging for diagnostic decision-making. While these systems show promising results on benchmark datasets in well-resourced research settings, their applicability in low-resource healthcare environments where diagnostic disparities are most severe remains limited and poorly understood. This mini review synthesizes key developments in LLM-vision fusion architectures from 2018 to 2026, with a focus on radiology-oriented visual question answering (VQA) a

Pilot test of an online training module on near-infrared spectroscopy monitoring for the randomised clinical trial SafeBoosC-III.

BACKGROUND: SafeBoosC-III is an international randomised clinical trial to evaluate the effect of treatment of extremely preterm infants during the first 3 days of life based on cerebral near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) monitoring versus treatment and monitoring as usual. To ensure high quality of the trial intervention as well as of patient care, we have developed a multilingual web-based training program to train relevant staff and test their competence. As we enter an under-explored area of e-learning, we have conducted a pilot study on the first of the five modules comprising the web-base

The auditory-verbal hallucinations of Welsh-English bilingual people.

OBJECTIVES: Psychological models of voice-hearing propose that auditory-verbal hallucinations occur when inner speech is attributed to a source external to the self. Approximately half of the world's population is multilingual, and the extent to which they use a second language for inner speech depends on their experience and competency in it. Bilingualism therefore provides a natural window into the processes operating in auditory-verbal hallucinations, but no systematic study of voice-hearing in bilinguals has hitherto been conducted. DESIGN: A mixed-methods observational study of psychiatr

ManyBabies 3: A Multi-Lab Study of Infant Algebraic Rule Learning.

The ability to learn and apply rules lies at the heart of cognition. In a seminal study, Marcus et al. (1999) reported that 7-month-old infants learned abstract rules over syllable sequences and were able to generalize those rules to novel syllable sequences. Dozens of studies have since replicated that finding and extended it using different rules, modalities, stimuli, participants (human adults and non-human animals) and experimental procedures. Yet questions remain about the generalizability of the core findings in Marcus et al., and sources of variation across these findings. In the curren

The Reverse Moral Foreign Language Effect in a Self-Driving Car Dilemma.

Research on the moral foreign language effect (MFLE) shows that using a foreign language can shift moral judgements, and sometimes this shift can reverse. The present study tested whether a reverse MFLE would appear in a self-driving-car dilemma that usually favours protecting the larger group (pedestrians). In Experiment 1 (N = 266; L1 Chinese vs. L2 English, between-subjects), a canonical sacrificial dilemma was used for benchmarking before introducing the self-driving-car dilemma; a reverse MFLE was observed in the latter (fewer utilitarian choices in L2 than in L1). Experiment 2 (N = 361)

Emotional states change the behavioral meaning of interbrain synchronization in dyadic bilingual language control.

Bilingual conversation requires coordination between a speaker who selects and produces the target language and a listener who monitors and responds to that output. The present study examined whether emotional state moderates the association between interbrain synchronization and behavioral performance during a controlled dyadic bilingual task. Sixty-two Chinese-English bilinguals formed 31 proficiency-matched dyads. One partner named pictures in Chinese or English, whereas the other made animacy judgments on the producer's spoken responses. Dyads completed mixed- and single-language blocks un

AI-driven adaptive feedback and EFL writing performance: The roles of engagement, metacognition, and epistemic agency in a cross-linguistic context.

This study investigates the role of AI-driven adaptive feedback systems in enhancing feedback engagement, metacognitive strategies, epistemic agency, and writing performance among Saudi EFL learners. Adopting a cross-linguistic perspective, this study examined the impact of feedback provided in both Arabic (L1) and English as a Foreign Language (EFL) contexts. A quantitative predictive research design was employed utilising Structural Equation Modelling to test the hypothesised relationships among the study variables. The sample comprised 1049 Saudi university EFL learners from various institu

Using semantic verbal fluency to estimate the relative and absolute vocabulary size of bilinguals: An exploratory study of children and adolescents.

INTRODUCTION: The full assessment of bilingual children often involves at least one language for which formal vocabulary tests are lacking and which the examiner does not speak. We examined, in a sample of children with typical development (TD), whether a semantic verbal fluency task, typically used in research as a measure of executive function, could be used in the place of a formal vocabulary test to estimate vocabulary knowledge when formal tests are not available. METHOD: 113 TD monolingual French speakers and TD bilinguals and with varying degrees of exposure to French, age 6 to 17 year

Speech-language pathologists' perceptions of childhood bilingualism.

The value of learning multiple languages has increased in the past 20 years. Despite this, some professionals continue to provide misinformation about bilingualism to many families around the United States, resulting in recommendations of implementing a monolingual approach for children. This study investigated the perceptions held by speech-language pathologists (SLPs) regarding childhood bilingualism. A total of 320 SLPs completed a survey stating their perceptions on childhood bilingualism for typically developing children and children with disabilities. Based on the number of responses, 29

Bilinguals' speech perception in noise: Perceptual and neural associations.

The current study characterized subcortical speech sound processing among monolinguals and bilinguals in quiet and challenging listening conditions and examined the relation between subcortical neural processing and perceptual performance. A total of 59 normal-hearing adults, ages 19-35 years, participated in the study: 29 native Hebrew-speaking monolinguals and 30 Arabic-Hebrew-speaking bilinguals. Auditory brainstem responses to speech sounds were collected in a quiet condition and with background noise. The perception of words and sentences in quiet and background noise conditions was also

Detecting Developmental Language Disorder in Monolingual and Bilingual Children: Comparison of Language-Specific and Crosslinguistic Nonword Repetition Tasks in French and Portuguese.

PURPOSE: Over the last decades, many studies have documented the clinical potential of nonword repetition (NWR) tasks for detecting developmental language disorder in mono- (MON) and bilingual (BIL) children by unveiling their difficulties in short-term memory and phonological accuracy. However, the precise nature of the nonwords to be used and the best scoring methods remain under debate. Some authors (e.g., Gutiérrez-Clellen & Simon-Cereijido, 2010) support the use of "language-specific" nonwords designed for a given test language in standardized tests. Other authors (e.g., Chiat, 2015) advo

Statistical word learning in Catalan-Spanish and English-speaking children with and without developmental language disorder.

BACKGROUND: A growing body of work shows that children with developmental language disorder (DLD) perform poorly on statistical word learning (SWL) tasks, consistent with the predictions of the Procedural Deficit Hypothesis that predicts that procedural memory is impaired in DLD. To date, however, SWL performance has not been compared across linguistically heterogeneous populations of children with DLD. AIMS: To compare SWL performance in a group of age, sex and non-verbal IQ-matched Catalan-Spanish and English-speaking children with and without DLD. METHODS & PROCEDURES: Two cohorts of chil

Second-language learning difficulties in Italian children with reading difficulties.

BACKGROUND: Children with dyslexia often show second-language reading and writing difficulties, but the cognitive mechanisms connected to this impairment need to be clarified. AIMS: The present study examined the neuropsychological mechanisms underlying learning English as a foreign language in 4th- to the 8th-grade Italian students showing reading difficulties (RD) or typical development (TD). For this purpose, screening involving 901 students was carried out to select children with RD. SAMPLE: Ninety students with RD were compared with 90 typically developing (TD) children matched for non-

Intervention for bilingual speech sound disorders: A case study of an isiXhosa-English-speaking child.

Bilingualism is common in South Africa, with many children acquiring isiXhosa as a home language and learning English from a young age in nursery or crèche. IsiXhosa is a local language, part of the Bantu language family, widely spoken in the country. Aims: To describe changes in a bilingual child's speech following intervention based on a theoretically motivated and tailored intervention plan. Methods and procedures: This study describes a female isiXhosa-English bilingual child, named Gcobisa (pseudonym) (chronological age 4 years and 2 months) with a speech sound disorder. How Many U.S. High School Students Have a Foreign Language Reading "Disability"? Reading Without Meaning and the Simple View.

Conventional wisdom suggests that students classified as learning disabled will exhibit difficulties with foreign language (FL) learning, but evidence has not supported a relationship between FL learning problems and learning disabilities. The simple view of reading model posits that reading comprehension is the product of word decoding and language comprehension and that there are good readers and 3 types of poor readers-dyslexic, hyperlexic, and garden variety-who exhibit different profiles of strengths and/or deficits in word decoding and language comprehension. In this study, a random samp

A tale of two writing systems: double dissociation and metalinguistic transfer between Chinese and English word reading among Hong Kong children.

This study investigated the rate of school-aged Chinese-English language learners at risk for reading difficulties in either Chinese or English only, or both, among second and fifth graders in Hong Kong. In addition, we examined the metalinguistic skills that distinguished those who were poor in reading Chinese from those who were poor in reading English. The prevalence of poor English readers among children identified to be poor in Chinese word recognition across the five participating schools was approximately 42% at Grade 2 and 57% at Grade 5. Across grades, children who were poor readers o

Acquired dyslexia in three writing systems: study of a Portuguese-Japanese bilingual aphasic patient.

The Japanese language is represented by two different codes: syllabic and logographic while Portuguese employs an alphabetic writing system. Studies on bilingual Portuguese-Japanese individuals with acquired dyslexia therefore allow an investigation of the interaction between reading strategies and characteristics of three different writing codes. The aim of this study was to examine the differential impact of an acquired brain lesion on the reading of the logographic, syllabic and alphabetic writing systems of a bilingual Portuguese-Japanese aphasic patient (PF). Results showed impaired readi

The language abilities of bilingual children with Down syndrome.

Children with Down syndrome (DS) have cognitive disabilities resulting from trisomy 21. Language-learning difficulties, especially expressive language problems, are an important component of the phenotype of this population. Many individuals with DS are born into bilingual environments. To date, however, there is almost no information available regarding the capacity of these individuals to acquire more than 1 language. The present study compared the language abilities of 8 children with DS being raised bilingually with those of 3 control groups matched on developmental level: monolingual chil
