[Caerulein-induced contraction of the ileal longitudinal smooth muscle isolated from various animal species].

An effect of caerulein was studied on a contractile response of the ileal longitudinal smooth muscle isolated from seven animal species, monkey, dog, rabbit, guinea-pig, rat, vole and mouse. In isotonic recording, caerulein induced a contraction in the muscle isolated from all animal species. Sensitivities of ileal strips to caerulein in the contractile response was divided into three groups. That is, a high sensitive group; dog and guinea-pig, a middle sensitive group; rabbit and vole, a low sensitive group; monkey, rat and mouse. In another series of experiment, effect of several antagonists

Deciphering Muscular Dynamics: A Dual-Attention Framework for Predicting Muscle Contraction From Activation Patterns.

Quantitatively deciphering the relationship between muscle activation and thickness deformation is essential for diagnosing muscle-related diseases and monitoring muscle health (e.g., Facioscapulohumeral Dystrophy). Despite the potential of ultrasound (US) imaging and sensing to measure changes in muscle thickness during movements, it remains challenging to make a fully portable device, considering the wiring and data collection. On the other hand, surface electromyography (sEMG) can record muscle bioelectrical signals and measure muscle activations, offering a unique perspective that correlat

Allatotropic peptides modulate muscle contraction of the female reproductive system in Rhodnius prolixus (STÄL).

Allatotropin (AT) acts as a myoregulator at the level of the dorsal vessel (DV) and midgut (MG) in triatominae insects. Previous analyses of the expression of the AT receptor in Rhodnius prolixus showed that AT is expressed in the DV and MG, but also in the reproductive system in females. To further study the activity of AT on female reproductive organs we analyzed the response by adult females in different physiological conditions, including unfed (virgin and mated), and fed mated females (gravid), to doses ranging between 10-14 and 10-6M. Myoregulatory activity was evaluated in vivo, by reco

Muscle co-contraction and co-activation in cerebral palsy during gait: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral palsy (CP) results from an injury to a developing brain. Muscle activation patterns during walking are disrupted in individuals with CP. Indeed, excessive muscle co-contraction or co-activation (MCo/MCa) is one of the characteristics of pathological gait. Although some researchers have studied MCo/MCa in individuals with CP during gait, inconsistent results limit our understanding of this literature. Increased knowledge of MCo/MCa patterns in individuals with CP may help the development of improved gait management approaches. RESEARCH QUESTION: This review aims to summari

Lack of skeletal muscle contraction disrupts fibrous tissue morphogenesis in the developing murine knee.

Externally applied forces, such as those generated through skeletal muscle contraction, are important to embryonic joint formation, and their loss can result in gross morphologic defects including joint fusion. While the absence of muscle contraction in the developing chick embryo leads to dissociation of dense connective tissue structures of the knee and ultimately joint fusion, the central knee joint cavitates whereas the patellofemoral joint does not in murine models lacking skeletal muscle contraction, suggesting a milder phenotype. These differential results suggest that muscle contractio

Muscle Contraction Has a Reduced Effect on Increasing Glenohumeral Stability in the Apprehension Position.

PURPOSE: Glenohumeral instability accounts for 23% of all shoulder injuries among collegiate athletes. The apprehension position-combined shoulder abduction and external rotation-commonly reproduces symptoms in athletes with instability. Rehabilitation aims to increase glenohumeral stability by strengthening functional positions. However, it is unclear how much glenohumeral stability increases with muscle contraction in the apprehension position. The purpose of this study was to determine whether the ability to increase translational glenohumeral stiffness, a quantitative measure of glenohumer

Purinergic receptor stimulation induces calcium oscillations and smooth muscle contraction in small pulmonary veins.

KEY POINTS: We investigated the excitation-contraction coupling mechanisms in small pulmonary veins (SPVs) in rat precision-cut lung slices. We found that SPVs contract strongly and reversibly in response to extracellular ATP and other vasoconstrictors, including angiotensin-II and endothelin-1. ATP-induced vasoconstriction in SPVs was associated with the stimulation of purinergic P2Y2 receptors in vascular smooth muscle cell, activation of phospholipase C-β and the generation of intracellular Ca2+ oscillations mediated by cyclic Ca2+ release events via the inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate recepto

Effects of fetal hypothyroidism on uterine smooth muscle contraction and structure of offspring rats.

NEW FINDINGS: What is the central question of this study? Does fetal hypothyroidism in rats alter uterine contractions and structure in the adult offspring? What is the main finding and its importance? Our study indicated that maternal hypothyroidism during pregnancy increased gestational length and decreased litter size. In addition, maternal hypothyroidism caused delayed puberty onset, irregular uterine contractions and histological changes in the uterus in the female offspring. This model might contribute to a better understanding of the cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in uterine

Regulation of gastric smooth muscle contraction via Ca2+-dependent and Ca2+-independent actin polymerization.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

In gastrointestinal smooth muscle, acetylcholine induced muscle contraction is biphasic, initial peak followed by sustained contraction. Contraction is regulated by phosphorylation of 20 kDa myosin light chain (MLC) at Ser19, interaction of actin and myosin, and actin polymerization. The present study characterized the signaling mechanisms involved in actin polymerization during initial and sustained muscle contraction in response to muscarinic M3 receptor activation in gastric smooth muscle cells by targeting the effectors of initial (phospholipase C (PLC)-β/Ca2+ pathway) and sustained (RhoA/

An impedance-based cell contraction assay using human primary smooth muscle cells and fibroblasts.

INTRODUCTION: Many cell types (including muscle cells and fibroblasts) can contract at physiological conditions and their contractility may change during tissue injury and repair or other diseases such as allergy and asthma. The conventional gel contraction assay is commonly used to monitor the cellular contractility. It is a manual assay and the experiment usually takes hours even days to complete. As its readout is not always accurate and reliable, the gel contraction assay is often used to qualitatively (but not quantitatively) characterize cellular contractility under various conditions.

Does pelvic floor muscle contraction early after delivery cause perineal pain in postpartum women?

OBJECTIVE: Pelvic floor muscle training is effective and necessary in the prevention and treatment of pelvic floor dysfunction during pregnancy and after childbirth. But because of the high prevalence of perineal pain observed in women after childbirth, many women and caregivers fear to start pelvic floor muscle training immediately after childbirth. However, it is unknown whether pelvic floor muscle contractions (PFMC) provoke perineal pain in women shortly after childbirth. Therefore, the main objective is to study whether PFMC performed immediately after childbirth is painful or not. STUDY

The role of α-smooth muscle actin in fibroblast-mediated matrix contraction and remodeling.

Cardiac myofibroblasts play an important role in myocardial remodeling. Although α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) expression is the hallmark of mature myofibroblasts, its role in regulating fibroblast function remains poorly understood. We explore the effects of the matrix environment in modulating cardiac fibroblast phenotype, and we investigate the role of α-SMA in fibroblast function using loss- and gain-of-function approaches. In murine myocardial infarction, infiltration of the infarct border zone with abundant α-SMA-positive myofibroblasts was associated with scar contraction. Isolated card

Capsiate supplementation reduces oxidative cost of contraction in exercising mouse skeletal muscle in vivo.

Chronic administration of capsiate is known to accelerate whole-body basal energy metabolism, but the consequences in exercising skeletal muscle remain very poorly documented. In order to clarify this issue, the effect of 2-week daily administration of either vehicle (control) or purified capsiate (at 10- or 100-mg/kg body weight) on skeletal muscle function and energetics were investigated throughout a multidisciplinary approach combining in vivo and in vitro measurements in mice. Mechanical performance and energy metabolism were assessed strictly non-invasively in contracting gastrocnemius m

Cat iris sphincter smooth-muscle contraction: comparison of FP-class prostaglandin analog agonist activities.

The pharmacologic characteristics of a number of FP-class prostaglandin (PG) analogs were determined by using the cat iris sphincter smooth-muscle-contraction assay. Cumulative concentration-response curves were generated for each compound. The relative agonist potencies (EC(50)) of the compounds were: cloprostenol (0.0012 +/- 0.0004 nM) >> travoprost acid (0.46 +/- 0.13 nM) = bimatoprost acid (0.99 +/- 0.19 nM) > (+/-)-fluprostenol (15.8 +/- 2.6 nM) = PGF(2alpha) (18.6 +/- 1.8 nM) > latanoprost acid (29.9 +/- 1.6 nM) > bimatoprost (140 +/- 45 nM) > S-1033 (588 +/- 39 nM) > unoprostone (UF-021

Influence of type of muscle contraction, gender, and lifting experience on postactivation potentiation performance.

Postactivation potentiation (PAP) or enhanced contractile capabilities may be influenced by a number of factors. This study examined the influence of type of muscle contraction (isometric vs. dynamic), gender, and previous weightlifting experience on PAP as demonstrated by changes in jump height and power output. Thirty young men (n = 15) and women (n = 15), classified as either having previous weightlifting experience (n = 20) or not (n = 10), performed 3 different sets of countermovement jumps, with the first set used to determine baseline measures of jump height and power. The second set wa

Influence of trunk muscle co-contraction on spinal curvature during sitting for desk work.

Nowadays, a lot of office workers are forced to sit at a desk for many hours while doing their jobs. While sitting, the pelvis rotates backwardly, and lumbar lordosis is flattened. At the same time, the load on the intervertebral discs and spine increases. Sitting in a slumped position is known to increase disc pressure even more, and to aggravate chronic low back pain (CLBP). Therefore, it is very important to teach workers about the correct sitting posture. In addition, it has been recognized that co-contraction of the deep spine-stabilizing muscles enhances lumbar segmental stability and th

[Association between laryngeal findings and vocal qualities in muscle tension dysphonia with supraglottic contraction].

Muscle tension dysphonia (MTD) is a voice disorder associated with abnormal laryngeal posture or glottic configuration induced by excessive contraction of the laryngeal muscles, and supraglottic contraction is one of the characteristic findings in MTD. In recent study we investigated the changes in laryngeal findings and voice quality and the association between them in the course of voice therapy for MTD with supraglottic contraction. The effects of voice therapy on the laryngeal and the vocal findings were assessed by two rating methods: the MTD score and the conventional GRBAS scores and bo

Characterization of the calcium release domains during excitation-contraction coupling in skeletal muscle fibres.

The spatiotemporal properties of the Ca2+ release process in skeletal muscle fibres were determined using a confocal spot detection system. The low-affinity, fluorescent Ca2+ indicator Oregon Green 488 BAPTA-5N (OGB-5N) was used to record localized, action potential-induced fluorescence signals from consecutive locations separated by 200 nm within a single sarcomere. Three-dimensional reconstructions of the Ca2+ transients illustrated the existence of fluorescence domains around Ca2+ release sites, which are centred at the T-tubules. By constructing isochronal plots, it was estimated that the
