BACKGROUND: Neck-specific exercises are effective for chronic non-specific neck pain, though responses vary considerably.
OBJECTIVES: Identify baseline features that predict a reduction in neck disability, pain and better global change following neck-specific exercise interventions.
DESIGN: Systematic review of prospective cohort studies and secondary analyses of randomised controlled trials.
METHODS: Six databases were searched until June 2025. Studies investigating baseline demographic and clinical characteristics, as well as physical and psychological features, with the outcome of pain a

UNLABELLED: Neck pain accounts for 15% of all soft tissue problems seen in general practice and are a common reason for referral to physiotherapy treatment. The prevalence of neck pain in dentists is 74.3%. Musculoskeletal symptoms in dentists are caused due to many reasons for e.g., prolonged static posture, repetitive movements, suboptimal lighting, and genetic predisposition. Since deep cervical muscle activity is required in synergy with superficial muscle activity to stabilize the cervical segments, a study is needed, to compare the effectiveness of deep cervical flexor (DCF) training and

PURPOSE: To evaluate the responsiveness and the minimal important change (MIC) of Neck Disability Index (NDI) and pain during activity by the numeric rating scale (NRSa) in the Norwegian neck and back registry (NNRR).
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Participants with neck pain responding to baseline, 6 and 12-months follow-up in the NNRR were included. Responsiveness was calculated using the area under the receiver operating characteristic (ROC). The minimal important change (MIC) was calculated with an anchor-based method and distribution-based methods. For the anchor-based method we used the Patient

OBJECTIVE: The influence of physical and psychosocial variables on self-rated disability in patients with chronic mechanical neck pain has not been fully determined. This study examined the relationship of pain, physical impairment, and pain-related fear to disability in individuals with chronic mechanical neck pain.
DESIGN: A cross-sectional study was conducted. Ninety-seven (n = 97) subjects (28 men, 69 women; mean age, 39.3 yrs) with chronic mechanical neck pain were prospectively recruited. Demographic information, duration of pain symptoms, pain intensity, pain-related fear, and cervical

SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: There have been no comprehensive systematic literature or evidence-based reviews published on this topic.
METHODS: We systematically searched Medline for literature published from 1980 to 2006 on percutaneous and open surgical interventions for neck pain. Publications on the topic were also solicited from experts in the

Intoduction: Common outcome measures for chronic neck pain are the Patient-Specific Functional Scale (PSFS) and the neck disability index (NDI). The primary aim was to categorize the top-rated, patient-selected functional activity limitations of the PSFS to determine if there were consistent limited functional activities for individuals with chronic neck pain and how these compared to the constructs of activities on the NDI. The secondary aim was to determine the relationship between scores for individuals who completed both the NDI and PSFS. Design: A retrospective review of data extracted fr

BACKGROUND: Acute calcific tendinitis (ACT) of the longus colli muscle (LCM) is an inflammatory response due to deposition of calcium hydroxyapatite crystals. It is typically correlated with whiplash and overuse injuries. A common presentation of this inflammatory response is acute but progressive neck pain. It is a rare but important cause of neck pain that should be considered on a differential diagnosis when distinguishing between life-threatening conditions and non-life-threatening causes of neck pain.
CASE REPORT: A 51-year-old woman presented to the emergency department (ED) reporting a

OBJECTIVES: The objectives were to compare forward head posture (FHP) in natural and corrected head postures between patients with nonspecific neck pain (NSNP) and controls and to clarify the relationship between natural and corrected head posture angle differences and deep cervical flexor function. This study aimed to provide useful evidence for postural assessment and treatment in patients with NSNP.
METHODS: In this cross-sectional study, 19 patients with NSNP reporting a pain score of 3-7 for at least 3 months and 19 participants with no neck pain within the previous 12 months were recrui

Background: Chronic non-specific neck pain (CINP) is common, but the etiology remains unclear. This study aimed to examine the relationship between cervical muscle composition (cervical multifidus and longus capitis/longus colli), morphometry, range of movement, muscle function, and disability severity (Neck Disability Index) in patients with CINP. Methods: From September 2020 to July 2021, subjects underwent cervical MRI and clinical tests (cervical range of motion, cranio-cervical flexion test, neck flexor, and extensor muscle endurance). MRI analysis comprised muscle cross-sectional area, v

OBJECTIVES: The present study purposed to observe the response of comorbidities of temporomandibular disorders (TMD) including migraine and cervical dysfunction after painful TMD treatment.
DESIGN: A total of 187 patients were included: 45 had no symptoms related to the painful TMD and migraine (Control), 52 had the painful TMD only (pTMD), 47 had the painful TMD that occurred earlier than the migraine (TMD1ST), and 43 had the migraine that occurred earlier than the painful TMD (MIG1ST). All patients were diagnosed based on the Research Diagnostic Criteria for Temporomandibular Disorders and

BACKGROUND: Chronic neck pain is a common problem and is often associated with changes in sensorimotor functions, such as reduced proprioceptive acuity of the neck, altered coordination of the cervical muscles, and increased postural sway. In line with these findings there are studies supporting the efficacy of exercises targeting different aspects of sensorimotor function, for example training aimed at improving proprioception and muscle coordination. To further develop this type of exercises we have designed a novel device and method for neck coordination training. The aim of the study was t

OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to investigate differences in ventral and dorsal neck muscle endurance (NME) among men and women with nonspecific neck pain (NP) or cervical disk disease (who had anterior cervical decompression and fusion [ACDF]) and healthy controls (C). Another purpose was to investigate changes in NME after intervention.
METHODS: Neck muscle endurance was measured in patients with NP (n = 78) and ACDF (n = 25) before and after the treatment period, and their results were compared to each other and to sex-specific reference values from controls (n = 116) at both the

The objective of this study is to determine whether independent associations exist between a history of neck injury related to a motor vehicle collision and: (1) graded neck pain in the past 6 months; (2) headaches in the past 6 months and; (3) depressive symptomatology during the past week. We used data from the Saskatchewan Health and Back Pain Survey, a population-based cross-sectional survey mailed to a stratified random sample of 2184 Saskatchewan adults aged 20-69 years. Fifty-five percent of the eligible population participated. The exposure was collected by asking subjects whether they

Objective: To evaluate temporomandibular disorder (TMD) patients' experiences of a supervised jaw-neck exercise programme. Materials and methods: The study used a mixed method design. All patients were diagnosed with myalgia according to the Research Diagnostic Criteria for TMD and divided into local myalgia (n = 50; 38 women, mean age 43 yrs, SD 14), and myalgia with generalized pain (n = 28; 27 women, mean age 43 yrs, SD 13). Patients participated in a ten-session supervised exercise programme that included relaxation, coordination and resistance training of the jaw, neck and shoulders. Afte
