X-optogenetic inhibition of VTA GABA neurons for wireless deep-brain stimulation and suppression of scratching behavior in freely moving mice.

X-ray-mediated wireless optogenetic neurostimulation (X-optogenetics) at any brain depth is a powerful technology for neuroscience studies and neurological disorder treatment. However, there is still a lack of effective and safe X-optogenetic neural inhibition technology because of the need for a precise spectral match degree between scintillator and inhibitory opsins and sufficient light intensity emitted from X-ray-induced scintillation. Here, we report an efficient X-optogenetic neural inhibition technology that achieves both wireless deep-brain stimulation and rapid behavioral suppression

[Vagal thermoreceptors in the gastro-intestinal area. Their role in the regulation of the digestive motility (author's transl)].

In anaesthetized cats, sensory vagal units were recorded in the nodose ganglion by means of extracellular glass microelectrodes. In the antrum and the duodenum we have found receptors tonically activated by warm (38-51 degrees C with an optimum at 46-49 degrees C) or cold (36-10 degrees C with an optimum at 12-10 degrees C) solutions. These receptors did not respond to mechanical stimuli (compression and distension of the viscera) and to chemical ones (perfusion with glucose and acid solutions). Thus they did not belong to polymodal type, but they must be considered as true thermoreceptors, sp

A neurophysiological theory for the pain mechanism of tic douloureux.

In attempting to understand the mechanism of pain production in tic douloureux, one must account for the myelination pathology seen in the primary afferent fibers, the cases where trigger is in a different division than the pain, the frequent lack of a fixed neurologic deficit, the effective trigger stimuli corresponding to large caliber axons which would not seem to involve the small axons usually associated with pain production, and similar puzzling features of the disease. We present a theory which satisfactorily predicts, or is consistent with, most known features of tic; it is based upon

Too Little and Too Much: Balanced Hippocampal, But Not Medial Prefrontal, Neural Activity Is Required for Intact Novel Object Recognition in Rats.

Impaired GABAergic inhibition, so-called neural disinhibition, in the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus has been linked to cognitive deficits. The novel object recognition (NOR) task has been used widely to study cognitive deficits in rodents. However, the contribution of prefrontal cortical and hippocampal GABAergic inhibition to NOR task performance has not been established. Here, we investigated NOR task performance in male Lister hooded rats following regional neural disinhibition or functional inhibition, using intracerebral microinfusion of the GABAA receptor antagonist picrotoxin or ago

Fluorocitrate ototoxicity. A morphologic and cytochemical model for primary neural degeneration in the guinea pig cochlea.

Fluorocitrate, an inhibitor of the tricarboxylic acid cycle at the aconitase reaction, produces a time and dose related neural dystrophy in the guinea pig cochlea. There is direct inhibition of succinic dehydrogenase activity but not nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide dehydrogenase and cytochrome oxidase via cytochrome c activities. The dystrophic neural changes morphologically are similar to those noted in primary neural degeneration and neural presbycusis in man. Neural degeneration in aging appears to be the result of a dissociation of biochemical reactions preventing the proper utilization

Efferent modulation of pre-neural and neural distortion products.

Distortion product otoacoustic emissions (DPOAEs) and distortion product frequency following responses (DPFFRs) are respectively pre-neural and neural measurements associated with cochlear nonlinearity. Because cochlear nonlinearity is putatively linked to outer hair cell electromotility, DPOAEs and DPFFRs may provide complementary measurements of the human medial olivocochlear (MOC) reflex, which directly modulates outer hair cell function. In this study, we first quantified MOC reflex-induced DPOAE inhibition at spectral fine structure peaks in 22 young human adults with normal hearing. The

Distinct inhibitory connectivity motifs could trigger distinct forms of anticipation in the retinal network.

Motion is an important feature of visual scenes and retinal neuronal circuits selectively signal different motion features. It has been shown that the retina can extrapolate the position of a moving object, thereby compensating sensory transmission delays and enabling signal processing in real-time. Amacrine cells, the inhibitory interneurons of the retina, play essential roles in such computations although their precise function remain unclear. Here, we computationally explore the potential effects of two different inhibitory connectivity motifs on the retina's response to moving objects, in

Respiration-coordinated attentional switch from feedforward to top-down informational flow directed by the basal forebrain: layer-specific blanket inhibition of pyramidal cells by neurogliaform cells in the piriform cortex.

When we are awake, we pay attention to a specific object in the surrounding world. Feedforward transmission of sensory information is enhanced in the cortico-cortical networks during the inhalation phase of the respiratory cycle for identification and evaluation of sensory information. Memory engrams of the associated scene are recalled by the sensory signal as a search tag. In the mammalian olfactory system, a topographic pattern of activated glomeruli in the olfactory bulb is transferred to the piriform cortex via the anterior olfactory nucleus, and then to higher cognitive areas. The odor m

Late cortical disinhibition in focal hand dystonia.

In writer's cramp (WC), a form of focal hand dystonia, cortical GABAergic inhibitory mechanisms are altered and may cause involuntary tonic contractions while writing. The objective of this study was to explore the time course of long-interval intracortical inhibition (LICI) that involves gamma-amino butyric acid (GABA)-B transmission and late cortical disinhibition (LCD) (that combines GABA-A and GABA-B mechanisms) in patients with WC and in control subjects. A double pulse transcranial magnetic stimulation protocol was used to evoke LICI and LCD while the subjects either gripped a cylinder b

Regional Hyperexcitability and Chronic Neuropathic Pain Following Spinal Cord Injury.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) causes maladaptive changes to nociceptive synaptic circuits within the injured spinal cord. Changes also occur at remote regions including the brain stem, limbic system, cortex, and dorsal root ganglia. These maladaptive nociceptive synaptic circuits frequently cause neuronal hyperexcitability in the entire nervous system and enhance nociceptive transmission, resulting in chronic central neuropathic pain following SCI. The underlying mechanism of chronic neuropathic pain depends on the neuroanatomical structures and electrochemical communication between pre- and postsy

Aging affects correlation within the V1 neuronal population in rhesus monkeys.

Visual function declines with age. This deterioration results not only from changes in the optical system but also from the functional degradation of the central visual cortex. Although numerous studies have explored the mechanisms of age-related influences on vision, they have failed to acknowledge the significance of neuronal correlation in dysfunction of the visual cortex. Previous research has focused on the functional degradation of individual neurons, with age-induced changes in correlation between neurons still unknown. In the present study, using electrophysiological techniques, we inv

High Working Memory Load Increases Intracortical Inhibition in Primary Motor Cortex and Diminishes the Motor Affordance Effect.

UNLABELLED: Motor affordances occur when the visual properties of an object elicit behaviorally relevant motor representations. Typically, motor affordances only produce subtle effects on response time or on motor activity indexed by neuroimaging/neuroelectrophysiology, but sometimes they can trigger action itself. This is apparent in "utilization behavior," where individuals with frontal cortex damage inappropriately grasp affording objects. This raises the possibility that, in healthy-functioning individuals, frontal cortex helps ensure that irrelevant affordance provocations remain below th

Common inhibitory prefrontal activation during inhibition of hand and foot responses.

Previous neuroimaging studies using manual Stop signal task showed the inhibitory-related areas in the pre-supplementary motor area (pre-SMA) and ventrolateral prefrontal cortex (VLPFC). However, most previous studies employed the manual response inhibition task and the brain representation of the response inhibition of the other body parts has been rarely studied. To further understand the precise brain processing of response inhibition, we performed the event-related fMRI study of Stop signal tasks using the hand and foot response to reveal the common prefrontal region relevant for response

Recognition of a pharyngo-oesophageal sphincter inhibitory reflex in dogs and its role in deglutition.

The present study describes the 'pharyngo-oesophageal sphincter inhibitory reflex' and its clinical significance. The study was performed on twelve anaesthetized dogs. A balloon-tipped catheter was placed within the pharyngo-oesophageal sphincter (POS) and another in the pharynx. The POS response to distension of the pharynx with a balloon filled with 2, 4 or 6 ml of water was recorded before and after application of local anaesthetic to the POS, and after successive section of the anatomical constituents of the POS. Upon pharyngeal distension, POS pressure was reduced; the greater the distens

Orientation selectivity of synaptic potentials in neurons of cat primary visual cortex.

Neurons of the visual cortex of the cat were penetrated with intracellular electrodes and postsynaptic potentials evoked by visual stimuli recorded. By alternately polarizing the cell with steady current injected through the recording electrode, IPSPs and EPSPs could be recorded and analyzed independently. Hyperpolarizing current suppressed IPSPs and enhanced EPSPs by moving the membrane potential toward the IPSP equilibrium potential. Depolarizing the cell toward the EPSP equilibrium potential enhanced IPSP. The responses to electrical stimulation of the LGN, where EPSPs and IPSPs could be di

[The mechanism of inhibition of binocular vision in convergent strabismus (author's transl)].

The mechanism of inhibition of binocular vision (at a cortical level in the Pavlovian sense) in convergent strabismus is described. The study concerns both those patients whith no amblyopia and those whose amblyopia has been cured. Part one of the article describe the clinical characteristics of this cortical inhibition as shown by the polarised light stereoscopic projector. Some basic concepts with this therapeutic application are described in part two. In this paper the author suggests a relationships between the severity of inhibition of binocularity and the degree of disturbance in spatial
