Identification and Bioassays of Sex-Specific Compounds From a Nuisance Net-Spinning Caddisfly Smicridea fasciatella (Trichoptera: Hydropsychidae).

Municipalities in Arizona and Nevada along the Colorado River are subject to seasonal mass emergences of a nuisance net-spinning caddisfly, Smicridea fasciatella McLachlan (Trichoptera: Hydropsychidae). Here, we describe the characterization and field testing of S. fasciatella extracts to evaluate their potential as lures in baited traps. Solvent extracts of external (i.e., full body-cuticular hydrocarbon, abdominal hexane washes) and internal (i.e., crushed abdomen) parts of adult S. fasciatella were prepared from both sexes, and analyzed by coupled gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GCMS)

Pesticides and Related Toxicants in the Atmosphere.

Pesticides and other toxicants released into the environment can contaminate air, water, soil, and biota. This review focuses on sources, exposures, fate, analysis, and trends. The potential for exposures due to atmospheric transport and deposition of pesticides and related contaminants may pose risks to humans and wildlife. Emissions of chemicals to air are related to physicochemical properties (e.g., vapor pressure and chemical stability). Experimental design and computer-based modeling, as related to emissions and dispersion of pesticides along transects downwind from release sources, will

Patterns of genetic divergence among populations of Aedes aegypti L. (Diptera: Culicidae) in the southeastern USA.

BACKGROUND: The yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti is a public health concern in the USA, especially in the wake of emergent diseases such as Zika and chikungunya. Aedes aegypti populations dwindled after the invasion of Aedes albopictus in the 1980s and many populations were extirpated. However, in some areas Ae. aegypti persisted in small populations and there are reports of recent resurgences of Ae. aegypti in Florida, Louisiana, Nevada and California. We assessed the population genetic structure of Ae. aegypti in Florida and Georgia, which has concomitant consequences related to mosquito

Modeling Climate Suitability of the Western Blacklegged Tick in California.

Ixodes pacificus Cooley & Kohls (Acari: Ixodidae), the primary vector of Lyme disease spirochetes to humans in the far-western United States, is broadly distributed across Pacific Coast states, but its distribution is not uniform within this large, ecologically diverse region. To identify areas of suitable habitat, we assembled records of locations throughout California where two or more I. pacificus were collected from vegetation from 1980 to 2014. We then employed ensemble species distribution modeling to identify suitable climatic conditions for the tick and restricted the results to land c

Sex-biased severity of sarcoptic mange at the same biological cost in a sexually dimorphic ungulate.

BACKGROUND: In sexually dimorphic species, male susceptibility to parasite infection and mortality is frequently higher than in females. The Iberian ibex (Capra pyrenaica) is a sexually dimorphic mountain ungulate endemic to the Iberian Peninsula commonly affected by sarcoptic mange, a chronic catabolic skin disease caused by Sarcoptes scabiei. Since 1992, sarcoptic mange affects the Iberian ibex population of the Sierra Nevada Natural Space (SNNS). This study aims at exploring whether mange severity, in terms of prevalence and its effects on body condition, is male-biased in Iberian ibex. FI

Zoonotic vector-borne bacterial pathogens in California mountain lions (Puma concolor), 1987-2010.

Sera collected from 442 mountain lions in 48 California counties between the years of 1987 and 2010 were tested using immunofluorescence assays and agglutination tests for the presence of antibodies reactive to Yersinia pestis, Francisella tularensis, Bartonella henselae, Borrelia burgdorferi, and Anaplasma phagocytophilum antigens. Data were analyzed for spatial and temporal trends in seropositivity. Seroprevalences for B. burgdorferi (19.9%) and B. henselae (37.1%) were relatively high, with the highest exposure in the Central Coast region for B. henselae. B. henselae DNA amplified in mounta

Motion sickness: comparison of metoclopramide and diphenhydramine to placebo.

OBJECTIVES: This is an evaluation of the efficacy of metoclopramide (MTCP) or diphenhydramine (DPH) to relieve symptoms of motion sickness in patients being transported via ambulance in a mountainous setting. METHODS: This is a prospective, randomized, double-blinded, placebo-controlled study of patients transported by ambulance in the Sierra Nevada mountains of Fresno County. Consenting patients who met the inclusion criteria were asked to rate their motion sickness every five minutes using a visual analog scale (VAS) during transport. If motion sickness occurred, they were randomized to rec

Detection of bovine trichomoniasis with a specific DNA probe and PCR amplification system.

Trichomoniasis is a widespread, economically important venereal disease of cattle which causes infertility and abortion. Effective control of trichomoniasis has been impeded by the insensitivity of traditional diagnostic procedures, which require the isolation and cultivation of the parasite, Tritrichomonas foetus, from infected cattle. We developed a 0.85-kb T. foetus DNA probe by identifying conserved sequences in DNAs from T. foetus that were isolated from cattle in California, Idaho, Nevada, and Costa Rica. The probe hybridized specifically to DNAs of T. foetus isolates from different geog

Health effects from exposure to atmospheric mineral dust near Las Vegas, NV, USA.

Desert areas are usually characterized by a continuous deposition of fine airborne particles. Over time, this process results in the accumulation of silt and clay on desert surfaces. We evaluated health effects associated with regional atmospheric dust, or geogenic dust, deposited on surfaces in the Nellis Dunes Recreation Area (NDRA) in Clark County, Nevada, a popular off-road vehicle (ORV) recreational site frequented daily by riders, families, and day campers. Because of atmospheric mixing and the mostly regional origin of the accumulated particles, the re-suspended airborne dust is compose

Increase in Coccidioidomycosis - California, 2000-2007.

Coccidioidomycosis is an infection resulting from inhalation of airborne spores of Coccidioides immitis or Coccidioides posadasii, soil-dwelling fungi endemic to California's San Joaquin Valley; southern regions of Arizona, Utah, Nevada, and New Mexico; western Texas; and regions of Mexico and Central and South America. Of an estimated 150,000 new infections annually in the United States, approximately 60% are asymptomatic. Patients with symptoms usually experience a self-limited influenza-like illness (ILI), although some develop severe pneumonia. Fewer than 1% of patients develop disseminate

Ethnicity and insurance status affect health disparities in patients with gallstone disease.

BACKGROUND: Complex gallstone disease is associated with greater risk of morbidity, associated with operative complications and longer hospital stays. The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether ethnicity or insurance status is associated with differences in presentation and outcomes in gallstone disease. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective analysis was performed for all patients who underwent cholecystectomy between August 1, 2007 and May 31, 2010 at the only teaching hospital in the region. Analysis of Variance, Chi square (χ(2)) and logistical regression analyses were used to evalu

Strategies for evaluating the environment-public health interaction of long-term latency disease: the quandary of the inconclusive case-control study.

Environmental links to disease are difficult to uncover because environmental exposures are variable in time and space, contaminants occur in complex mixtures, and many diseases have a long time delay between exposure and onset. Furthermore, individuals in a population have different activity patterns (e.g., hobbies, jobs, and interests), and different genetic susceptibilities to disease. As such, there are many potential confounding factors to obscure the reasons that one individual gets sick and another remains healthy. An important method for deducing environmental associations with disease

Japanese encephalitis in two children--United States, 2010.

Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) is the leading cause of vaccine-preventable encephalitis in Asia and the western Pacific. JEV is maintained in an enzootic cycle involving mosquitoes and amplifying vertebrate hosts, mainly pigs and wading birds. The virus is transmitted to humans primarily by Culex mosquitoes, which breed in flooded rice fields and pools of stagnant water and most often feed outdoors during the evening and night. JEV transmission occurs mainly in rural agricultural areas, but occasional human cases occur in urban areas. Japanese encephalitis (JE) in persons who have traveled

Safety strategies and harm reduction for methamphetamine users in the era of fentanyl contamination: A qualitative analysis.

INTRODUCTION: In the United States, methamphetamine use is increasing and the context of its use has changed, with reports of illicitly manufactured fentanyl being mixed with methamphetamine (either deliberately or inadvertently). We explore risk-mitigating actions taken by people who use drugs to protect their health when using methamphetamine in that context. METHODS: We conducted qualitative interviews with 48 adults (18+) who used methamphetamine in the past three months at two sites in Nevada, USA and two sites in New Mexico, USA. Interviews were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using

The Social Behavior Inventory for children in a child abuse treatment program: development of a tool to measure interpersonal behavior.

This article presents information about a tool that can be completed in a few minutes to measure the interpersonal behavior of childen particpating in a child abuse treatment program. One sample of children came from the community and had no reported history of abuse or mental health services. A second sample was children obtaining therapy services through a child abuse treatment program. Factor analysis of scores provided by parents for their children obtaining therapy services led to the development of three scales to assess aversive interpersonal behavior, two to measure prosocial interpers

Trends in Hyperkalemia-Related Sudden Cardiac Death Among Older Adults in the United States, 1999-2020.

BACKGROUND: Hyperkalemia is a potentially life-threatening electrolyte disturbance, particularly in older adults with comorbidities. Hyperkalemia can trigger fatal arrhythmias and contribute to sudden cardiac death (SCD). However, national trends in hyperkalemia-related SCD remain poorly defined, especially in the aging US population. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional analysis using CDC WONDER mortality data from 1999 to 2020. Deaths were identified using ICD-10 codes for SCD (I46.1, I46.9) as the underlying cause and hyperkalemia (E87.5) as a contributing cause. Age-adjusted mortality
