Violence against nurses working in US emergency departments.

UNLABELLED: The objective of this study was to investigate emergency nurses experiences and perceptions of violence from patients and visitors in US emergency departments (EDs). BACKGROUND: The ED is a particularly vulnerable setting for workplace violence, and because of a lack of standardized measurement and reporting mechanisms for violence in healthcare settings, data are scarce. METHODS: Registered nurses members (n=3,465) of the Emergency Nurses Association participated in this cross-sectional study by completing a 69-item survey. RESULTS: Approximately 25% of respondents reported exp

Turkish nurses' experiences of verbal abuse at work.

In the health sector anywhere in the world, nurses make up one of the groups that are most exposed to violence such as sexual harassment, verbal abuse, and physical abuse. This descriptive study investigated the experience of verbal abuse among 339 hospital nurses in Turkey. Findings indicate that the most frequent and most severe forms of verbal abuse reported were judging and criticizing, accusing and blaming, and abusive anger; the most common emotional reactions were anger, followed by shame, humiliation, and frustration; and most nurses used engaging in negative activities to cope with ve

Oncology nurses' teaching and support for suicidal patients.

Although the nursing literature contains many references to the nurses' teaching, support, and advocacy functions, the consumer and other health care professional literature suggests that the potential importance of nurses in these roles is not widely accepted. In a secondary analysis, we examined nurses' interventions for teaching and support in survey of a random sample of oncology nurses in a national organization. Clinical oncology nurses (n = 454) reported their attitudes to and knowledge about suicidal patients. They reported their goals, interventions, and emotional support for a suicid

Nurses are increasingly involved in pharmacovigilance in Sweden.

INTRODUCTION: In Sweden, voluntary adverse drug reaction (ADR) reporting started over 40 years ago to detect rare, serious, unexpected adverse, mainly type B, reactions. During the period 1965-2004, 92,000 reports were assessed. Since certain nurses are licensed to prescribe a limited number of drugs, nurses also form part of the reporting team. AIM: To analyse the ADR reporting by nurses in Sweden. METHODS: All reports by nurses and other health-care personnel entered into the Swedish ADRs database SWEDIS (Swedish Drug Information System) were retrieved for the 10-year period 1995-2004 (Swe

Chemotherapy and cutaneous toxicities: implications for oncology nurses.

OBJECTIVE: To review common cutaneous effects and dermatologic or cutaneous toxicities related to the administration of chemotherapy. These range from mostly cosmetic, such as hyperpigmentation or alopecia, to dose-limiting toxicities such as palmar-plantar erythrodysesthesia or hand-foot syndrome. DATA SOURCES: Current research, published literature, and internet resources. CONCLUSION: Assessment and grading of associated toxicities of therapy is an integral part of caring for this patient population. Early intervention may reduce toxicities associated with therapies for this patient popula

Public health emergencies: nurses' recommendations for effective actions.

During a public health emergency such as an influenza pandemic or a bioterrorism attack, nurses may be at risk for exposure to lethal infectious diseases when caring for victims. The aim of this study was to identify interventions nurses believe will support their ability to cope during public health emergencies. A qualitative research design was used with 33 nurses from designated bioterrorism-receiving hospitals. Nurses recommended adequate protective equipment, education, drills, accessible information and available content experts, and available administrators. Other recommendations includ

Perioperative nurses' perceptions of stress in the workplace.

Stress is a factor that affects nurses on a daily basis and can result in nurses' absenteeism, hostility, and aggression, as well as reduced productivity and efficiency. One hospital in Northeast Florida conducted a quality improvement project with perioperative nurses to determine which of the work situations they encounter are perceived as most stressful and the frequency with which these situations occur. Results from the survey showed that the majority of perioperative nurses found situations that fall into the category "crisis on the job" were the most stressful but occurred least frequen

Substitution of doctors by nurses in primary care.

BACKGROUND: Demand for primary care services has increased in developed countries due to population ageing, rising patient expectations, and reforms that shift care from hospitals to the community. At the same time, the supply of physicians is constrained and there is increasing pressure to contain costs. Shifting care from physicians to nurses is one possible response to these challenges. The expectation is that nurse-doctor substitution will reduce cost and physician workload while maintaining quality of care. OBJECTIVES: Our aim was to evaluate the impact of doctor-nurse substitution in pr

Bullying nurses at work: theorizing a gendered experience.

This paper is about bullying among nurses at work. It presents the psychoanalytically based theory that workplace bullies, impaired during infancy by primary caregivers who were less than loving, project their own hostile personalities onto others and then relate to others without empathy or understanding, in demeaning ways. When these hostile people are employed in a masculine workplace, they protest against the gendered imperatives imposed upon them, hysterically. Because of the masculinization of the workplace, hysterical bullying varies according to gender, with women bullying in a hostile
